I think this was a very good arrangement, played by skilful musicians. I gave "thumbs up", but I cannot help but feel that something is missing. I feel like I could listen to some of the more amateur videos of this song far longer than I could sit and listen to this. Perhaps it just became too "traditional" (particularly towards the end) for my liking. Not to say that others won't enjoy it, it's just not me. But as far as technique goes I can't really fault it under the circumstances.
Not only do the people look like they have no idea of what they are singing about but this is NOT a choral piece. It is, in effect, a love-song to Jesus. It is meant to be sunfg as a personal acclaimation of what God, through His Son, has done for all mankind and thereby sung with feeling and passion
@jenchal the old-fashioned way? Without any passion? This is a great song, and they're good singers, but for group of people singing about the "amazing love ... that my God should die for me" it would be nice to see a few smiles.
At least those new churches have a bit of joy and gratefulness.
For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. Romans 5:10
wow...wonderful choir...keep singing for the Lord...keep uploading the church choir...it blesses me to know that there are still churches who sing the old fashioned way...

Well having sung in many churches , fellowships in Britain its not the BBC sound engineers tweaking things its the standard way of singing it. I think it is sung much more aggressively over here. Any way at the end of the day the words mean so much. But i have been in rooms of only 6 people and boy do we give it whelly(An English term meaning give it everythingLOL)
Wesley himself said the hymns are to be sung "lustily and with good courage."
Genuineal, maybe you can upload a video of some folks "giving it whelly." Somebody needs to stand up and show our current contemporary crowd what they have missed as they have run off to the entertainment-soaked, dollar-driven temples of fog and laser light.
Why does the BBC televison "Songs of Praise" congregation always sound better than ... every other congregation -what do the BBC sound engineers do to the sound to make it sound so good.
.
This group is not congregation but chior.
.
It must be part microphone placement, plus propbably massive tweaking of the sound in a lab.
.
Even the big Church -downtown on Manhattan Island had the same type of problem when the memorial service for WTC was shown on uk. tv.
Is it fair to say that congregations sing better when the music is tighter? I know in my experience that's true but you are right, SoP is always better.
I agree, the orchestration is very corny, sadly this is often the case with modern church music. A simpler arrangement would have been more interesting. I also was introduced to this hymn through InterVarsity, and it is now one of my favorites.
This hymn, unlike most praise songs being sung today, is filled with great theology. IT IS PROFOUNDLY ROOTED IN SCRIPTURES AND GOD CENTERED. I first learned to sing and love this hymn with the Inter Varsity Christian Fellowship, Philippines. I pray that our churches today will come back to the good old hymns such as this. (Jon Parreno)
Every stanza of this song is with deep meaning, which I want viewer to take time to ponder upon. It was also beautifully rendered in my opinion. God bless you.
This hymn has in my opinion the greatest text of any hymn ever written! Take the time to read through all the verses under "about this video." Muscially this production is weak at best...everything about it is totally amateur. Brass players out of tune; singers who sound like they've had no coaching; sopranos totally flat on the last high note... etc.
markpianoman - well I guess you have never been to one of the services before. Most of the people in the orchestra (especially brass) have played under very well know conductors, and have/are playing in other very good orchestras. You could feel the Spirit in the room when this arrangement was played. If you are able to, you really ought to visit and here them live.
The beauty of this hymn lies in its musical simplicity cojoined with the profoundness of its concise lyrics. Sadly, I think orchestral overproduction kills its purity.

@secretary51 I think it is a Scottish one, from the accents - especially the ladies rolling the "r" in the word "for" (I'm a Jock myself).

If you could only hear it in person! believe me, it sounds a lot better in person. I should know.

genantray91 -- hearing it in person would only magnify what is good and what is not so good about the performance.
