You lost the 1" because of the tongue and groove, the sheets are 4 foot *including* the tongue, and the tongue is approximately 0.5", so with three sheets you lose two tongues into the grooves, which is ~1.0 inch. You would think they would make the tongue past the 4' mark so that floors would match up better. Technically, the "proper" way is to have one tongue running down the middle of the 12' length of your floor with your sheets staggered.

You didn't take into the measure of the width of the 2x4. They actually measure around 1.5 to 1.75 inch3es.
