Autotune is a computer program that tunes the input to preset frequencies. This thing literally blows the sound from the instrument into the guy's mouth and it's then reflected back into the mike.

Roger used a "TalkBox", not a Vocoder, and an old Yamaha yz7 Roland Juno-60 to control it with, & if you're not a decent Keyboard soloist you would have to practice to get adept at using it. That shit T-Pain & all of the Rappers are using is an Auto-tuner Program you can buy for any Mac Or PC as a plug-in, and you just sing into it as the program Morphs your voice into that "Cher" Sound. Kraftwerk & Midnight Star used a Vocoder in their '80's releases extensively. You can hear the difference.
