As I recall when they recapped the goal on HNIC (Don Cherry and Ron Maclean) it went like this-
Cherry-"and see like (Leaf's defenseman Sylvian) Lefevbre's got the puck right there n he goes to dump it out-he hits his own guy and now look at Potvin lookin at him"like-Holy Tabernac Sylvain ! What are ya doin????"
Maclean- "Don! you can't say that on T.V!"
Cherry-"mehhhhh nobody knows what it means anyways"
@GTreconGT clark was easily one of the best captains the leafs ever had, sundin was good but he abandoned the leafs in the end so i have no respect for him. clark for life
@Guinters Have no respect for sundin? Dont call yourself a leafs fan then sir. What he did for the leafs is something no other player had done in the past.
@ObltKG4 Yeah exactly, sundin was quite involved in the Toronto community and worked with a lot of hospitals. I have a lot of respect for a player like him.
@GTreconGT And what did he do exactly? Took $80million from them over his tenure and at the end screwed the Leafs for a a few draft picks and a 1st line center. Kaberle is a decent human being. Sundin will be a Canuck forever for most Leaf fans.
@tmaras64 When you sign a contract the "no trade" clause is something you are offered and negotiate, sundin took it, why should he have gone to another team? Also you dont even know if what other teams were offering for sundin was worth it for Fletcher. You really think we could have gotten a 1st line cntre and 2 picks? LOL, you are in whacko land!
@GTreconGT He had the right to exercise his no-trade clause and he did. He also went on national television and told people he wanted to end his career as a Leaf back in February of that same year. Summer came and he fled to the Canucks. HE WAS OFFERED A COMPETING 1 YEAR CONTRACT WITH THE LEAFS. HE DIDN'T TAKE IT. He really screwed this franchise. Ask Cherry how he feels about Mats. Whats with the "whacko land" comment? How old are you? Are you allowed on the internet unsupervised by an adult??
@tmaras64 As soon as you accused me as a 'kid' on the internet it just proves your dumbfuck inferiority. Obviously you have nothing important or relevant to say so now you are trying to discredit my opinion cause you clearly got owned. I dont give a fuck about don faggot cherry, he is a complete dumbshit and racist. Should be taken off the air, and you should get off your computer.
@GTreconGT Nothing relevant to say??? You are one dumb %^#@er...Answer the question shit head: "Why didnt he take the offer the Leafs offered him but still decided to play in the NHL for ANOTHER TEAM after claiming he wanted to end his career as a Maple Leaf?? He screwed his franchise. The Leafs would have had a much better team today if he wasn't so selfish. Your hate for Cherry is well understood but man he got it right on air when he talked about this. Now go cheer for the Flyers or something
@GTreconGT I'm a HABS fan and never liked Sundin, but you have to respect the guy, he is one of the best players in the history of NHL, so thumbs up for you :)
@GTreconGT r u kidding doug gilmour did more for the leafs than sundin ever did. sundind din't play hurt like dougy and definetly never gave his all like dougy did.
the leafs were formerly in the campbell conference. However, this was the first season the league (i.e. bettman) changed the conference names to eastern and western, and the leafs remaining in the western conference until the start of the 1998-99 season
This goal made it 4-2 Leafs with about 4 seconds left in the game. At least it made the game look closer for the Sharks lol. Hellova underdog run for them that year with the upset vs Detroit & pushing the Leafs to the brink. Johan Garpenlov, Game 6 overtime crossbar anyone?
This was very reminiscent of, Edmonton Oiler, Steve Smith's infamous own-goal in game 7 of the 1986 playoffs vs. Calgary.
Except that this one here didn't matter much in the context of the situation that was at hand in this game's next-to-assured outcome by then at that point in the game.
@komar155 There was no such thing as western conference back in those days. that's a new thing. they had divisions back in those days. Detroit and St.louis were in our division. good times !
Arturs Irbe was a freaking monster that run. you've gotta respect how the sharks did in their third year.
then again, look at what florida did their third year....

Did it in fact go completely in the net BEFORE the clock ran out? And for that matter, was it a one goal game?

@raran44 From the commentary it sounded like the goal wouldn't matter. But I also think I noticed at 0:35 the scoreboard reading 4-1.

To this day, Toronto is missing Mats Sundin. Top 5 Captain in Leaf history (period).
