  • I've always felt the best girlfriend was a razor blade, they never hurt much/

  • This is the ultimate early manics video. a culmination of everything they did up to 1995. My favorite video because you get to see Richey smile and laugh with wasnt a common occurance in many of his interviews. Also Nicky Wire seems like a genuinely fun person to be around

  • Wow Thats me in the crowd at 1:19 . Those early shows were chaos!. I've got Richeys last ever show on Tape from the Astoria Christmas Gigs, I'll see if can put it up sometime. The gig was amazing they smashed everything in sight as if to signal it was the end. In hindsight it was for the original Manics. Got my tickets for October in Newport , they are still great live but now in my late thirties I tend to stand nearer the back LOL.

  • @sfxsteve Same here :)

  • Jesus shit, Richey's beautiful!

  • i just read that this song was written for the '95 judge dredd film.

    goodbye nietzsche, hello stallone!!

  • @Daskaar This was written WAAAY before 95'

  • @birdy47

yeah that's probably true isnt it?

maybe not waaayy back but definetly before richie dissapeared

  • Look how ripped James is! 1:25

  • Poor sods, I realise now...

  • Great! :)

  • I am going to have an epic tattoo on my foot, it's going to be an anchor with three lines of scroll running through it with the words 'Heal yr'self, hurt yr'self, judge yr'self' (minus the commas) running through it.

I thought I'd share, anybody else feel inspired by it, get it done!!! xx

  • @greenheather I was thinking When i'm 18 i'd have that on my lower arm.

  • Cool!! :¬D

  • wOl! i loved this video....

  • Richie was a terrific lyricist, " the Holy Bible" just prove it, i think. Witty, sad, and unbearable words at the same time. Genius.

  • heal yrself hurt yrself judge yrrself

  • @ borntoend94

I don' t agree with you, Manics without Richey are still a good band, they' re different but still good. They also matured and with them, their music.

  • Haha, "radical", sorry that was the only part i found at all funny, the rest was deadly serious, it just made me feel like i was in a 1960's political movement called "The London Underground".... I don't think there's any ideas that could be considered radical in modern culture, hell you say that, wait...."SCIENCE!" said it, then it must be true right?

Yeah i'm a graduate, of what?

"SCIENCE!", look if science, wait, "SCIENCE!" said all of a sudden the world is triangular would you believe it?

  • Hey Lau, you do know she was japanese right?

When it comes to the manics, i say the more support the better, you can't exactly say she was tarnishing any of Richey's ideals, give the girl a break, anyway, a lot of people say Richey faked it, but hey, in the spirit of the song, i'm not going to judge anyone else..... And well done on discovering a new manics song all on your own! :D ;P

  • Find your truth

    Face your truth

    Speak your truth

    And be your truth

  • ..... :O fuckerzenofzefuckville!!!!!

  • f*K!N MAJIKKKKKKKK love it, richey is so perfect here!

  • I read that Dyonisus was the 'God of beer' but I doubt that it is right.

There is a kind of gladitorial theme to this song. 'Dyonisus against the crucified' is quite a militant phrase. Also 'kiss your wounds' would be something a gladiator might do before entering the arena.

  • Dyonisius was someone in greek mythology. there's this whole thing about dyonisus and apollo in literature.

  • The trouble with Richey was that he didnt fair well in interviews. I'd say lyrically he's almost as good as Morrissey but when it came to interview James was always a better spokesman for the band. It makes it difficult to peice together the meaning of the songs with Richey's frame of mind. I think the first three albums are probably there to be discovered by a younger generation. Generation Terrorists could sit well in any punk collection.

  • I think loads of the stuff he said in interviews was really intelligent and I think he and nicky were good spokesmen for the band. Once you begin to find out more about the band and their ideas etc. it's much easier to understand their lyrics, though from a distance they do seem pretty incomprehensible.

  • I'm sad that they didnt have the longgevity of bands like the Clash, the Buzzcocks, Stiff Little Fingers etc. They are a different band from when Richie was onboard. Yet there are so many great bands going now. Muse, Radiohead, Richard Hawley, the Eels, not to mention the back catalogue of stuff from Frank Zappa to Pink Floyd, Morrissey, New Order, the Happy Mondays.

  • True. Richey was a vital member of the band and you wouldn't expect them to be as good without him. It's a shame, because the direction they were going with the holy bible was brilliant. And totally unique.

  • Dyonisus was the God of Wine. Also a liberator. Through intoxicated madness the will is liberated as depicted in Rubens 'Drunken Heracles'. If you look at the painting you'll notice the dualism between Greek paganism and christianity. Rubens attack on the moral puritanism of pre-enlightenment holds a candle to lyric 'Dyonisus against the crucified'.

  • @borntoend94

It's a reference to Nietzsche's The Antichrist I'd suspect given the content of the song.

  • i love the fact that the Thai bits are blatently later than 1991 but they've done the classic vid cam thing of having the wrong year an stuff.

  • one of the best videos

  • Is this track old or new? A rare b-side re-released??

  • it wasnt a b-side, it was recorded in 1995 as it was to be featured in the film 'Judge Dredd'. But unfortunately it wasnt included in the film. It was featured on the album Lipstick Traces (which i hav uploaded myself if ya want to check that out) and it was also the last song recorded with richey before he went missing

  • my favourate song by them. what a song!

  • Best band ever.

  • The MSP were like one of those Transformers that when they all united blew everything else away:)

The greatest gang in rock history

  • @jstewart840 that's soooo awesome.

  • yes it is. she did some vocals on "Little Baby Nothing"

  • good that is

  • Comment removed

  • what year was this recorded?

  • in 1995

for judge dredd movie soundtrack but never make it for copyright reason

  • It's weird. He looks pretty damn muscular and intimidating in some of those clips. But apparently he's only 5'5 therefore wouldn't be able to become a Police officer!

  • Anyone have any idea what the quote shown at the beginning is? I keep squinting at it but I can't make it out.

  • It's a quote attributed to Nietzsche: The devotion of the greatest is to encounter risk and danger, and play dice for death.

  • Thank you!

  • in my opinion, they shud of released this with journal for plague lovers, coz this is richey lyrics aswell. oh well, never mind

  • did you honstly compare one of the most political (And greatest) band ever to a bunch of yanks that sing about love all the time. Subjects covered. Lets move on

  • Yeah, sorry my brother posted that. If anyone compared mcr to this, i would punch them in the face. simple as that.

  • I did once....

  • LMFAO

  • wise up nirvanna were the most miserable bastards who graced music! how many kids killed themselves because of their music?

  • sorry for digging up really old comment , but it's not just Nirvana , Richey was directly 'responsible' for many disappearances and anorexia cases , because those kids' only maxim was 'hurt myself to get the pain out' .

  • Comment removed

  • Nirvana are good but the MSP were and are still the best indie band.

  • the manics arent indie

  • he sure is :)

  • Richey is God

  • Controversial you stupid clown.

  • Eric clapton is nothing more than an old fashioned git who got drunk and praised the NF.

  • fat, old, bigoted cunt with a guitar.

  • Not THE god, but i know what you mean! he sure was a true genius though through his lyric's , some understandable some not. That is what made him such an unique individual.

  • We talked about this song during philosophy class! The teacher explained us that the lyrics are inspired by Nietzsche's philosophy: i.e. "Dionysus against the crucified" refers to the nickname used by Nietzsche in some of his writings (Dionysus) and to his critical attitude towards religion. "Find your truth, face your truth, speak your truth, be your truth" is clearly referred to Nietzsche's nihilism (western culture, its morals, myths, are just lies, you have to find and face the real truth)

  • MR KNOW IT ALL!! only joking i want to know all that though

  • fuck that's awesome. thanks!

  • @odilemonod that's really cool. I'm more in line with Camus' Absurdism than Nihilism though.

  • this was originally going to be written for the movie judge dredd, but was cancelled due to one of the members disappearing at a crucial time, random eh.

  • i think richey wrote it, it's not a cover.i love it.

  • Fucking intense!Love it.

  • Thanks for uploading...a fantastic song!

  • Did Patrick Jones do this vid then?

  • Love Love Love it!!

  • Speak The Truth ...

  • In some ways most bands are just mucking about compared to this!

  • Lyrically there's a lot to the song. Probably one of the more clever of the the more or less 'recent' diatribes concerning religion.

  • very agressive song..cool intro

  • SUCH A GOOD SONG

and so much fun to play live

  • A-MA-ZING

  • love James's bare torso. WOOHOOOO!! ;-)

pretty cool song as well. James is the only singer I know who sounds great even when he's shouting.

  • that is such a good song:)

  • no, good song! manics rock! if you hate it then you just keep it to yourself!.. and judge yourself!

  • defo the best song they eva did period.

  • Oh my god, it's my favourite video too!!!Great James Great

  • Prob the best manics song, pure holy bible and the last song recorded with Richie. It was meant to be included on the Judge Dread soundtrack, but Richie went AWOL towards the final stages of recording, so the video was made up of the Holy Bible tour, Most of it from the Japan leg of the tour. Much of the footage was recorded by the manics thenselves

  • If you look at the date on the camera, some, if not alot of it was from 1991 when they were touting about Generation Terrorists.

I love how angry and raw the song is though

  • this is actully a patrick jones video! it rocks! :)

  • The date in the video isn't always right. Some of the footage is from Thailand in 1994.

  • did they get on with Traci Lords or was it just for show?

  • I'm not totally sure, but I think it was more than just for show. She did the vocals on Little Baby Nothing, Nicky used to say that she was the smartest American he'd ever met, and she was reportedly very upset over the whole Richey thing, yadda yadda.

  • They did get on with her. Richey actually said that "Traci Lords is female power". They thought she was very intelligent, nice and articulate. And yes, she did say that she was sad when she heard about Richey disappearing.

  • heal yrself, hurt yrself, judge yrself....went 2 see the manics on weds ...still amazing

  • A cool track that I'd not heard/seen before. I think this was also the very last song the Manics recorded with Richey Edwards.

  • Awesome!

  • very nice ty

  • its great

  • *loves it!*

  • Thanks for uploading one of my favourite manics vids!!!
