@Ca11umism: The average idiot wouldn't enjoy the Animal Kingdom: no CGI, no explosions, gun shots are subtle, no celebrity actors either. Unfortunately, that's the way the world works: it's a pity but great movies like this are not for the average bogan, or suburban family, and are definitely not for the American market: most yanks wouldn't understand half the dialogue or any of the nuances.
Lots of respect though to those Americans who did enjoy it and rate it at Sundance.
Ben Mendelsohn and Joel Edgerton were great in this movie, as was Jackie Weaver. The kid (James Frecheville) was good too, although his role wasn't demanding, just a few grunts here and there. But, the little acting he did have to do was pretty good. Ben Mendelsohn creeps you out in this film. He's supposedly not a great bloke in real life and was apparently a turd on set for this movie - it comes through in the movie.
Ben Menldohn needs to get into bigger roles. His new film “Trespass” looks pretty sweet. I can’t wait to see him working with the great Nic Cage. bit. ly/oW4dGe
@Arrested101 Thankyou! I thought I was the only one who believed it was nominated for/won Oscars simply because it was a Hollywood deal. Fincher's great,
'Seven' is in my top 5 favorite films ever, but TSN was just horrid. JE and AG are both boring and at times, unconvincing-especially AG-but what got me was the fact that it won best screenplay. It was just JE bitching to lawyers for 2 hours and then it ends.
There was no real drama in it at all. King's speech was much better.
It's scenes like this one that puzzle me. How is that pretentious garbage like The Social Network gets all this acclaim, but down to earth, brilliantly paced, acted and directed masterpieces don't get shit?.
@Ca11umism Completely agree. Think it's down to the whole 'who you know' thing etc. The social network for example was directed by David Fincher (a great director IMO) but the film was shit. It got so much distribution and marketing because of the Hollywood connections. Whereas Animal Kingdom was an independent film, and Aussie independent film at that (not a great deal are known worldwide) and was David Michod's debut directing... with no Hollywood connections of any kind, it couldn't compete..
