The colliders would require an infinite amount of power to accelerate the protons to the speed of light according to the parameters defined by relativity. The restriction lies not within the accelerator per se, but because the protons have mass. Photons, the carriers of the electromagnetic force and what we commonly call 'light' can travel at the speed of light because they are massless. They have zero mass.
