  • this is so Cool! i can't stop dancing xD

  • Are inimitable voice! I love stereolab!

  • it surreal to see what the world was like outside of the indie world at this time. it's rick astley and kid and play get ups!

  • WTF @ random roman gladiator dude.

  • @Naroon201 The hair farmer freestyling (on the left) at the 2:13 mark is pretty good too!

  • @djdepaolo Haha, I just noticed that when you pointed it out. That was golden. Gotta love the performances where the people just dance just to do it with no knowledge of the music or musicians they're listening to. There's a similar performance from the 60's by The Who with their song "I Can See For Miles" here on youtube.

  • great song,

    crap show.

  • @cheapy2006 ha-ha, I've never heard of this show until I came across this video, but I think it's funny that one of Stereolab's best songs and live performances was taped on this show. It has at least one redeeming value now.

  • The first time I saw them was loloopalooza and I was just fin mesmerized I was like floored

45 min of sound that was like omg how do you describe it this video is how you describe it

miss mary very much as I became the groupie

  • amazing tune performace etc- love the old moogs

  • Did you see the Roman Gladiator at 1:45? He looked like a pretensious twat, not to mention a camp one.

  • Nice! Hey, I have a Moog Rogue just like that. Moog's rock!

  • fab song .loved this song for a long time.

  • Love the bit at 0:36 where Laetitia looks up - she is putting so much into it, so sweet and intense. Music on The Word rarely got this good and what must it have been like having all those sad idiots flailing about in front of you. Takes us back so strongly into their sound-world, so sophisticated and mature for people, not being patronising, their ages.

  • Does anyone know what Mary's guitar has written on it?

  • whooo hhhooo

  • Fuck fucking yeah!

  • Very very good!! No question. When I read negative comments I wonders about the other musical artists that I love!! About thousands of them. No shit!! How shallow! Glad I know how to LISTEN! I'm sure millions of people feel the same way. Ahhh the listeners GOLDEN!!!

  • 1:50 Spartacus is attacking the crowd

  • This is from a show called 'the Word' which was Channel Fours flagship late night Friday 'yoof' tv show. They had all manner of bands on, from metal to hip hop, indie and dance. As a 14 year old I used to watch it every week to catch cool bands live. The crowd was always idiotic, which made for some great awkward moments like this one! I will never forget this performance, or Therapy? for that matter; they destroyed it.

  • Kitch pop at its finest.

  • i could only dream of being so mod and hip

  • A tragedy w/o Mary Godbless & godspeed u are missed

Stereolab cannot be mimicked, fantastic musical vibes, we are all less without their music :(

  • <3

  • Dare I even ask, but what the fuck is going on with that crowd? Where did they found those people? Is this even real? It is a scene more like from a surreal Lynch movie

  • @RedWhiteGreenBandit If you think they're bad here, look how awful they are when Throwing Muses were on, or *shudder* L7

  • I love the trojan dancers having it off at the background

Surprisingly, they seem really into analog-kraut-rock

  • i feel like this is by far the best live music performance i've ever discovered on youtube.

  • 1:fucking 20. goddamn.

  • the backline sounds kinda like paper plane

  • Back when the 90's were cool.

  • PUTA QUE PARIU...

That's a pity we'll never see this amazing band anymore...

  • 60s on the 90s! omg!!!

  • mary mary mary

  • superb

  • they look so young here....

  • when they played in Athens GA in...er...1998?1999? i went up to Tim and gave him one of my CDs. he was pleased, pleasant and polite,

    RIP Mary...

  • @skitch88

I remember that concert. Or rather I remember having to miss it. Dammit.

  • i went to a french disco once. it was nothing like this though, some bloke touched my bum, so i left without finishing my drink.

  • @drugmong I was that guy. I got to finish your drink too. Happy days

  • @drugmong back to his house to suck his cock.

  • There are @ least 22 people on this planet that do not deserve to be breathing. Idiot wind. That is all.

  • BAKON FLOOR

  • The best song in the music history. I love this video

  • haha the girls at 2:11 !

  • i love this audience! american bandstand circa 1987

  • Who are the 2 guys on the sofa with Terry Christian at the start?

  • @z00ts00t77 One is a very young and bewildered looking Sean Maguire. Donno who the other guy is though.

  • @z00ts00t77 Sean Maguire & i reckon the other guy's K7 - had a song "come baby come" in '93, you'll find the video on here

  • yeah baby rock it !

  • Oh look...

    hipsters...

  • This is so wonderful to see, they are so young and nervous. Thank you so much for refreshing my memories.

  • @picturepal Laetitia Sadier, nervous ? er… not sure !

  • +0p$#!+

  • who is the singer?

  • @barny232

Laetitia Sadier on lead vocal, the sadly for us,departed Mary Hanson on harmony and guitar.

  • Hall O' Fame! Thanks Ammon!

  • fan bloody tastic. Any song with "human existence is pointless" gets my vote innit

  • fan bloody tastic

  • I watched "the Word" religiously for the bands..only hit the Mute button when Chris Evans was on. I just sooo love the intensity of that song!!!!!

  • RIP Mary Hansen.

who could forget such a vibrant performance!, glad to say i was part of this music era...the best time of my life :)

  • 2:25 Rhea Perlman likes to get down to Stereolab

  • Great lyrics, still relevant: Though this world's essentially an absurd place to be living in It doesn't call for total withdrawal I've been told it's a fact of life Men have to kill one another Well I say there are still things worth fighting for La Resistance! Though this world's essentially an absurd place to be living in It doesn't call for (bubble withdrawal) It said human existence is pointless As acts of rebellious solidarity Can bring sense in this world La Resistance!
  • 1:32 Now that's what I'm talking about! Three keyboards people... THREE! And it sounds bad-fucking-ass!

  • Moog grew up in my backyard!!

  • For some reason one part of that song reminds me of EMI by Sex Pistols...

  • @Stereotest totally! Maybe it's the bass chord progression or the lead into the chorus, but you're right it totally sounds like EMI. Nice call.

  • great song but now that I hear it with editors is alsom

  • brilliant.... such verve and energy!

  • Yeah' lame and boring. do something for meeee!

  • sting's desert rose made lame n boring

  • What if I get sick of dancing? Can I just walk to the side and sit down for a while? Whew! I hopes nobody sees me!

  • This is the kind of performance every band dreams to achieve in front of TV cameras.

  • We miss you, Mary Hansen!!

What a great band, what a great performance.

  • Thanks Terry, this show was probably where I first heard Stereolab...I love my music and am always moving on but this band caught me on many levels, this is everything I want, crautrock, punk rock, euro disco and everything else it so wonderfully IS.... glad you put the time in to get them on, just wonderful...

  • Took me six weeks of arguing the toss to get them on the show , and then when I told them how great they were and how good I thought they were when they supporting unclassed ( some Washington band who sounded like The Wedding Present) at the Whiskey A-go-go in LA they just blanked me like I'd gobbed on there sandwiches - hey love the art and not the artist, God Bless Em

  • Awesome band - RIP Mary Hansen x

  • "Though this world's essentially an absurd place to be living in

It doesn't call for total withdrawal"

  • SLAMMIN'!!!

  • stereolab en peru!!! empresarios nacionales, carajo ponganse las pilas, ya es hora que los traigan!!!!

  • superbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb

  • What. a. tune!

  • who is that guy on moog?

  • @armenasriyan it's sean o'hagan of the high llamas/microdisney. he was a frequent collaborator with the 'lab

  • @armenasriyan It's Dave Callahan from the Wolfhounds and Moonshake

  • Δεκαετία 90, λέμε... τέλος.

  • all the little hipsters running around NYC can only bow down to their original hipster gods...All they are doing is ACTING like they are oh so AWARE WHEN ALL THEY ARE DOING is being a new incarnation of sheeple....with nothing to add nothing to say just watching vintage VH1 for fashion and music tips...

  • amo este grupo y esta cancion!!!

  • they are such seers! It is going to be a word uttered by the Great Incarnation It Self here .How did they know??They"re saying about what's next in the world. The bliss it self. They are so possitive!!!William Blake says about the dancing of true souls,, there are millions realised souls here right now ,and all because of Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi.....

  • Magnifique! My Ear worm for the last 9 shuffing months!

  • Great band, great performance! Bring back 'The word'!

  • ca me donne des frissons, pour moi un des meilleurs groupes de musique de tous les temps et ouio rien que ca !

  • how good is this? it took me years to get into Stereolab, I ignored them because of all the Neu! comparisons...My Loss!!! Yeh, they lifted a lot of the Neu! sound, but they added to it big time. Great band!

  • Far more bigger than Pam Anderson's twins !!!! Fantastic !

  • Ó anyám milyen zene már! :O

    AWESOME!

  • Fantastic version of this song, but were they holding a convention in the crowd for people suffering from some kind of narcissistic dancing disorder.

  • @rjbaker77 What the fuck do you expect? We were only just out of the 80's, reeling from too much cocaine, and so far up our own arses, we would have fallen over if we moved any faster!

  • @rjbaker77 Yes actually it was narcoleptic danze neurosis lmao!

  • @rjbaker77

Don't worry, they are twats. Great song.

  • Amazing!

  • this is institution, bravo bravo bravooooo!!!

  • Big ups to the menschen in stuttgart - perhaps a theme tune fot them -

  • LOOOOVE stereolab:]]]]]]]

  • Hey fellow youtubers, don't yer just love gettin' splanged watchin' this stuff?

  • @pigyob - if by spangled you mean stoned of my ass, then yes :]

  • awesome song. keyboardist is super cute! :0)

  • luv the chav girl far left.

  • indefinite hiatus, end of year???????????

  • Laetitia´s new album will be released september 21st, followed by a European club tour. Please everyone, make that a success, she deserves that!

  • @ramonster1972

No she doesn't....She's the real reason there's no more stereo-lab. She's trying to cut everyone out.

  • the singer is cute , what is her name pliz ?

  • Where's Mary?

  • @PochoProfeta145 In the little white dress. Killed by a lorry whilst riding her bike in London. RIP

  • @PochoProfeta145 where's Mary now? she died during christmas holiday in 02. hit on her bike by an oncoming truck. died on impact. i cried.

  • Ahh, the ninieties!

  • That poor girl Mary was killed a while back. An integral part of the band. xx

  • FUCKING STEREOLAB

  • and..... is that a girl, cause she looks like, but these times we'd never be shure. so please could someone answer me, is that a REAL girl????

  • i went their concerts 2 times at Osaka about 10 years ago.

    They're great without doubt.

  • Le wOOt wOOt

  • huuuuman eeeeexisteeeeence is pointless...

  • I have fallen in love - all over again.

  • The vocals remind me of LUSH.

  • Great live performance, the audience is great too. And of course the "cheesy dancers". I just love Stereolab!!!

  • Fucking immense...apart from half the pretentious "look at me" twats in the audience.

  • Gay Gladiator GTFO

  • GO GO Baby!!

  • nice

  • Shit they look so young! I remember seeing this on TV on a Friday night when I was 14, and getting on a bus to Beggars Banquet in Kingston and buying the single the next day. Pop moment!

  • QUE ENERGIA!!! ME ENCANTA

  • Note perfect? What the fuck are you on about? This ain't the fucking American Idol, this is real music with passion. This is utterly fantastic. No faults.

  • astronut, American Idol is smply a common-man fallacy designed to line the pockets of greedy records execs. Stereolab runs rings around them any day.

  • @astronut66 i totaly agree with with you hoss!

  • @astronut66

sorry, i meant to vote this commment up, i pressed down by accident cause i was disracted by the music :P theyre class :)

  • I was about to fall unconscious at the feet of that gorgeous singer, when at 1:43 pieces of another video appeared, featuring a gay GLADIATOR. Now, what was THAT?

  • @meaganw that Is a lot of sports bras el oh el.

  • Such a shame she was killed in accident.

    R.I.P

  • That was not her. Please check again

  • So what you are telling me is that Mary is still alive?

  • Sorry, my mistake

  • Twas the backup singer killed. In Dec 2002. She plays guitar to the left of the lead singer @ 0:54.

  • what a fucking nice song!!!!!!!!!

  • Forgot how good this song was. The Word had its critics but you can't doubt the quality of music it had.

  • that's a lot of sports bras!

  • In my mind comes a sentece: "KEEP ROCKING!"

We all know what it means!

    Good Vibes!

  • vocals go a bit flat. shame, theyre my favorite non grindcore band ever!

  • Haha those music shows were always friggin awkward.

  • Classic. Here's to Mary - well missed.

  • its katharine gifford who left Stereolab to form her own group, Snowpony.

  • who's that third girl on keys?? I never knew the 'lab had a third female...just a live guest perhaps?

  • Heavy Stuff

  • I prefer Editors' version even though it's my least favourite track they have ever recorded next to Disappear

  • Great song. I miss Mary.

  • i probably watched this but i'm afraid i was very, very stoned at the time.

like for most of the 90s. sheesh.

  • I think the live version is better that the original.

  • Me too. I especially love the way the drummer is pounding the tar out of his snare. The bass player has a Rick, too!

  • I see what you're saying. there are many of my favorite bands that have crystal clear records but when they play live they just don't have the luster. this is usually due to them singing off key, as in this case when laetitia goes higher up on the melody you can hear and see her struggle. Pinback: last two times I've seen them I cringed at their off key and sloppy vocals, where as their albums are pristine. I could see coldplay suffering the same way.too long a comment? well FUCK YOU.

  • un clasico, gran video!!!

  • Great Song, Great Band!

  • Love this performance. I recorded the same footage on old VHS back then too.

  • Elena Keldibekova

  • La Resistance!
