  • Hi Terry Thanks for the video. You mentioned the Supertwist LCD available in UK at Maplin Electronics. Are you saying that this would provide a suitable elastomer connector to do the repair?

Second question: If it proves impossible to locate a suitable elastomer, do you think that an alternative repar by re-attaching the faulty ribbon connector by some means or other is possible?

  • thanks a bunch from posting this video. I was able to find a backlight display from winstar (p/n WH1601A-YYH-JTK) 16 caracters and 1 line with back light. cost R$20,00 - US$ 11,10 each. as mentioned by others bellow its necessary to put a 1 to 3 mm foam among display and front cover, specially to repair a Multi 3100 unit due to ribbon lenght (in the middle sometimes lack of pressure). mi multi 3100 and wind 3100 are functional again. Porto alegre - Brazil

  • Yes that works. But how to do this repairon an Navman 3150 Wind instrument. There are the contacts on the PCB and from the LCD not on the same place. Does anyone have suggestions for that situation? h.groeneveld2@chello.nl

  • This is great!!!! Can anyone provide a European webaddress and model number for the replacement "LCD Panel Meter"? I have great trouble finding it over here.

    Thx for a great video

  • I am happy you ere able to extend the life of your equipment....I may indeed go back and add the 3mm foam to the face of the LCD as outlined by p26byc as one of my displays is still temperamental....

  • Thanks Terry, with your help I've just seem to have fixed my 3100 multi.

I had some problems finding the right elastomere-stuff, at two local electronics-shops they didn't know what I was looking for.

Finally I bought a few second-hand displays (old car-radio, broken weatherstation).

'Had to combine two different elastomere-strips to get to the required 8 mm. thickness, but it workes fine again.

  • I just fixed my 3100 multi Navman with Terry's video as a guide. I 'll pass on a couple of details that could help the next guy. The unit is held together with Torx T7 screws, not a standard size. The Multi has a elastomer connector that is longer, about 2" (50mm). Acetone cleaning takes time. The LCD screen had poor contact using the clips. So I added a 0.125" (3mm) thick strip of foam to the face of the LCD over the connector. The case screw pressure provided the contact uniformity.

  • Thanks a lot also From Holland

So You see, shit is sold all over the world but now i've repair it

i ditn,t now it was the poor contact en after buy a panel meter online for only 4€

and a half hour job it works fine you safed me 100 € replace cost

so you diserve a beer from me

  • Hey Darren, i have one "donor panel" here on the boat. Printed on the side of the box is " PM-1028A. LCD Panel Meter 9V INDEP"

    CIRCUIT-TEST ELECTRONICS

I bought this locally in Victoria, I am quite sure you should be able to find one in a local Electronic DIY store such a Fry's. There is one in Renton...

These are not special panels and you don't necessarily need to purchase the same one that I did. They all contain the elastomer connectors that will be used for the repair.

  • To the Creater of this video, Can you please provide a make and model number for the digital panel meter your using and maybe a name and number where they can be purchased. I'm in Seattle but have a very hard time finding it. Great Video Thanks

  • Thank you for this advice. I repaired Navman 3200 Diesel instrument that Northstar stopped producing... Worked the first time like a charm.

Now I am struggling to decode Navbus protocol to extend the network via Bluetooth to a mobile phone... Does anybody have any details on the protocol?

  • @matevzb "Navbus protocol" = NMEA :) nothing special

  • @dbmgreen Do you have any details on this one?

  • Oh man, I can't wait to try this fix. Thank you so much for posting!

  • I know how daunting the other option is...not just the money for new instruments but the time to remove and replace all this networked stuff....I will at sometime do just that...hopefully in a few years from now.

  • Fantastic. This fix has worked like a dream on my unreadable combined depth and log 3100.

  • As an owner of these crap electronics - I'm extremely grateful for this Terry! You are the man! I will do that easy fix. Hell you did it one handed while filming from your cell phone for goodness sakes! Good job.

  • Terry,

Very interesting video. Please can you tell me the height of the conductive elastomer strip you used and was the pitch of the conductive paths 1mm?

  • Terry Singh...this is an awesome video!! You are a treasure to the world. I am sure the sailing community will be grateful for this!
