  • UGH! They've killed the spirit totally! You CAN'T put naff, modern POP music to a story like PAHR. It grates! I've just had to kill the volume because it's so uninspiring. Audiences expect to hear at least some attempt to include similar themes or instrumental effects to those in the Movie and surely any singing voices used should be unaccented and ethereal? The success of the the film was greatly due to the haunting, and disturbing quality created by the music so I don't get this at all.

  • This is terrible. Making a musical of Hanging Rock is like reducing Bergman's movies to a Hollywood action or romance movie with Jeniffer Aniston.

This looks horrible. The musical is a perfect antithesis of what Hanging Rock was going for.

The stupid singing with the stupid smiles and the stupid dancing destroy the very fabric of the film.

  • Incredible :) Nice going guys!

  • A new story has been released which follows Joan Lindsay's classic tale called, "Dream Within a Dream". After 44 years Picnic continues to inspire creativity and stimulate the imagination.

  • I disagree with thetownplanner! I think this looks like it was a fabulous youth production. You all look totally dedicated and very well-rehearsed, with energy and commitment. I'm 'praying' that, in future, thetownplanner will keep his (or her) unhelpful negativity to himself!

  • I liked the 'it should have been sarah' song and the 'St valentine' song, but I didn't think too much of the other songs.

  • are there 2 versions of this musical? i have a demo recording of picnic at hanging rock the musical and the music is completely different.

  • @mellowwfelloww yes there is one by Daniel Zaitchik and then there is this one. That is all. But I am assuming that after 11 months you may have already figured that out...

  • I thought it was brilliant. a theatre company i know called NYMT did a production of it, and i loved it. the songs are all beautiful.

  • ...Also, the versions of the songs you are hearing are early demos and not cast recordings. The music sounds cheesy...and Americanized but it was not how it was performed. And any attack on the choreography or set needs some sort of justification as the words you use are bereft of any sort of reasoning.

  • The musical was not an adaption of the film, it was an adaption of the book, so you can't complain about it ruining the film as the play was an interpretation the same way as the film was. By all means you can prefer the film, to this production, but don't slate it until you have actually seen it. There is a soundtrack over the top so you can't attack the atmosphere and intensity of it, because let me tell you it had it in abundance...

  • this looks abysmal! how could this be done to such a subtle film.

i am utterly speechless. the music is god-awful, the lyrics are shallow, the set is naff, the choreography extremely amateur (0.56-0.59 is actually laughable) etc. shows a total misunderstanding of the book and film.

i am praying this doesn't go any further...

  • You can hardly comment having seen just a snippet. It was a magical show under professional direction and writers and captured the essence of the film perfectly.

  • That is just wrong.

  • OMG. I am such a fan of the movie, and this totally destroys any of the beauty and haunting quality that it possessed. What were they thinking with this? I could see it having potential had it had better writing for the material. I'm sorry, but this is dreadful.

  • I'm obsessed with the movie, but I can enjoy this fresh production, also. Don't think of it as a remake of the movie.

  • Thanks. You're right. There is no comparison.

  • Dreadful... no other word for it.

  • I could do with a cuter Michael, lol, than the one here.

  • A new production of the musical launches at Nicolas Chamberlain College, Bedworth, Warwickshire from Wed 26 November....

  • Fans of the musical - the Norwich production opening Wed 29 Oct and finishing Sat 1st Nov has two new songs and the script has been tightened a bit. Worth a visit....

  • This is bizzare sorry but it's just is um it has lost it's magic in this musical.

  • How do you know? This is just a snippet and you can't really say that without watching the show

  • Exactly. It's just another interpretation of a great literary work. There's nothing new about books becoming films or musicals. Otherwise we would have seen the 1967 "Book Brigade" picketing Australian cinemas in 1975 chanting "Picnic At Hanging Rock is NOT a film!" It's more likely that the most confronting thing for people is that the film has enjoyed "centre stage" for 33 years, before this new theatrical interpretation has arisen. And all success to it.

  • Hey xinnocentxlorax, is it the cast of the production you were in that recorded the score accompanying the video?

  • well these snippets are horrible, it's terrible music.

  • Goosebumps... Wow! Excellent music! Thank you xinnocentxlorax...

and thanks jazzax62 this is one musical I will watch out for... :)

  • You and me both somewhereintime43 ! It really is very special and I think it would go down extremely well locally. Even better being performed at the actual Hanging Rock reserve...wow...what an event that would be! All we can do is let people know...

  • Couldn't agree with you more jazzax62... the musical, a tour, and a screening of this beautiful movie in the evening on Valentine's Day... It would be a unique experience every year... My Mum and her partner travel a lot in their caravan, they have been all over Australia, and I was already excitedly telling her yesterday about your idea... can't wait to see it come to fruition... :))

  • its going reli well .. its going to b amazing

  • hot news - productions of the musical are definitely planned in the next few months! First will be in Norwich in November, same month another in Bedworth and a third for early next year in Bracknell so if you're close you can get to see how powerful the show is. More news as it comes through...

  • the bedworth one will b awsome .. trust me

  • Hey lora, the mp3 samples at the site are awesome. This looks to be such a unique and high quality production. You obviously had a great time being part of it from what you've said below. Is there a blog site for the musical? I'm sorry to hear that the film left you cold. I must admit when I was at school it didn't particularly move me, but over the years I've warmed to it and it's now a favourite. I think there's plenty of room in the arts world for more than one expression of a great story.

  • thise show should be in the west end its awsome

  • Extraordinary. I like theatre and musicals very much and the idea of Joan Lindsay's quintessential contemporary mythology being translated into a stage musical seems a natural progression. If anything, the question should be: why has it taken so long? It sounds like a cracker of a production. I wonder whether it will hit Australian shores and rekindle our love for this story? I hope so. How long did it take for cast members to master the 'Strine accent? Only kidding ;-) Thanks for sharing it.

  • Love how xinnocentxlorax deletes most of the negative comments. This is corny as you will ever see!! Enjoy.

  • There's a difference between negative comments and people who are slagging it off because they can't open their mind to anything but the film.

  • I like musicals too - Dancer In The Dark.

  • My initial reaction is one of total revulsion. I can't imagine such a sublime and graceful film and book transformed into a musical with schlocky tunes. However, for all we know Victor Hugo rolls over in his grave every time Les Miz is performed. It is the great march of culture, things are re-purposed and re-used. Maybe it will help publicize the film to a new audience. I just want to know when Seventh Seal: The Musical is coming out!

  • An understandable reaction and think you're right about cultural reinterpretation. When I first attempted to read Joan Lindsay's novel as a kid, it didn't speak to me in a language to which I could relate, so I discarded it. As an adult however, I found it to be richly textured and enthralling. The interesting thing about the musical is that it is reaching kids whose first language is SMS and introducing them to a now classic story. I think that's a good thing. Joan would be smiling, I feel.

  • wow these are new bits added on oh you should down load the entire show im dying to see iot please please do that

  • Wow, I didn't know this story existed as a musical!

  • The composer was very well established and experienced, and the director has directed many west end shows. I suggest you learn to open your mind to creative and exciting theatre before slagging it off. I personally think the film is a complete sham and being a part of this production was one of the best expereinces of my life.

  • wow!! this looks amazing!! This should be on west end!! It looks professional and the songs sound amazing, well done 2 all the cast!! gg

  • i thought it was a west end show they should make a cd soundtrack thise is awsome id love to see thise

  • This looks absolutely beautiful! What awesome staging!! I'm about to start rehearsals on a production of the play, and will definitely be sending this link along to the rest of the cast to get them pumped! :)

  • are you going to be in the show who are you playing i loved thise movie and thise should be in the west end

  • Yep! We're working on the Shamas play, set to open at the end of the month. I'm playing Irma Leopold. (yay!)

  • whos Leopold is he Mirandas boyfriend or some guy the girls know

  • Leopold is Ima's last name. Irma is the girl who reappears.

  • oh yeah i remeber her if thise is based on a true story youd think shed write a book on what happend so whos your Miranda then

  • Irma Leopold is a great part! I played Madamoiselle Dianne in this production! I'm the one crying hehe!

  • hi how is your show going Ima

  • This looks amazing and sounds beautiful. I am looking for a piece to direct and this has caught my attention. Any information on how to get rights or script or anything would be helpful. Also is it based on anything? I ask for research purposes.

  • iv seen the film of thise hey isnt it based on a true story those girls remains have never been found even today their still missing

  • Wow!

How exciting! It makes me laugh, but i can image how great this would be,i love how they bag out Edith! Is that Miss. Lumley or Mrs.appleyard?! lol

  • guys, ur all retards, you havnt even seen the show!

i went and saw it in chichester, and it was absolutely amazing! the film is a complete waste of space in comparison, all the director does is pervily focus on the pretty school girls. but there is a hell of a lot more to it which is portrayed so well in this musical.

one of the best shows ive ever seen, if only it made it to the west end!

  • Offcourse, i agree its always easier if you have been to the show. But as you probably understand very few of the viewers on youtube have seen it live. I must say that you have a strange way of looking at this movie, just beacuse they are young girls it does not have to be something perverse. There is absolutely no nudity of any kind in the movie. Their world is so protected from everything sexual.

  • Film is one of the kind, a piece of art. This is not. However I do respect effort, but it can't match haunting magical reality of the movie...

  • I'm a huge fan of the movie, so I love the idea that people have bothered making a musical out of it. Not that i've seen it, living in Sydney, but I think it's great. Thumbs up to everybody involved.

  • It looks good as a musical but I prefer the original as a film!

  • No, no, no, no, no! Picnic At Hanging Rock is NOT a theatrical production, why try and make it one?

  • What the f*** was that? It's completely ruined the film and the book! Not being rude anything, but it looks VERY cheesy.

  • It may look cheesy, but I was in the show, and it was actually very dark and spine chlling. Sorry if you didn't enjoy the video, but I personally think that the film is very cheesy, so there u go

  • lol it scared you? do you mean the video or the actual show?!

  • This ruined Picnic at Hanging Rock for me.

  • What do you mean?!

  • it scared me... no hard feelings on you mate
