pretty flawed design: what about learning effects? the guy actually had time to consider how he could do those things better... what about the guy wondering, why would they ask me to read this stupid boring sentence over and over again?
i can draw well and i caught the double THE instantly, doesn't mean i am a genius. plus wasn't he primed by having already tried the tests once before? seems like a flawed placebo to me, sorry
This is geared to lay people with no knowledge of the scientific method. If you read his published article you can see that he did test for the placebo effect by fake stimuliting subjects and having them do the tests. His results were only produced when they went through the real stimulation.
well i guess it works, but it also might have a couple of undesired effects... i don't like the idea of playing with the thing that i hardly know how it works :P
"it is truly a pity when a beautiful theory is destroyed by a hideous fact" - F Wohler.
However, the methodology in the experiment is absolutely against any kind of known experimental doctrine - in order for any of these data to be even vaguely convincing, they would have to be obtained from a double-blind, high volume experiment. Besides, it's social sciences - there is always way more speculation than empirical evidence.
is this test really that scientific? you would be surprised how much a placebo can do, and I wouldn't be surprised that applying the machine and them thinking its going to make them smarter is playing a hand in it either.
@cryonyits07done actually he already has: didn't you notice the ridiculous baseball cap he's wearing? that's because of the tests and all the brain-turning-off thing... he was a proper scientist before, now a complete douche.
