i know my ktm if you hulk smash the kickstart the bike says fuck you and doesn't start. mine you have to give a short throttle twist, then a smooth swift kick steady the whole way. no stomping for me. But my valves may be out and i'm fairly certain i have no throttle screw..
my crf250r wouldnt start in the cold or after being ridden for over an hour. so i took it to the shop. turns out my valves are screwed. adjusted them and it starts fine, have to rebuild the top end when it stops starting again :(
My CRF450 valves are a bit out id say, she NEARLY starts cold but it doesnt just wanna fire, itll start but stop instantly thats when i pump the throttle twice to put some fuel in then none when i kick it, thats the only way it seems to even start, yet it still dies, would you say its getting too much fuel or my valves are just out?
@LordEthan2 - It is possible your values could be tight. The other thing you could try here is to increase your idol speed, and check your air screw settings. Outside of that, I am not sure what to tell you.
Hey Honda4wheelin...sounds like you have to spend a little time on a 4stroke. If you're trail ridding, the only thing you want is a great 4 stroke. The lighter the better. More power than you will ever need.
I don't really prefer a 2 stroke over a 4 stroke, I honestly just love riding, I own a 2 stroke, but that is because that's all I could afford, if i could find a 250 or a 450 for 250 bucks then for sure I would buy it, but I got an RM 250 for 250$, you really can't go wrong there. And when I was talking about the four strokes making power, i was talking about the strokes of the engine, the stages and all of that if you know what I'm talking about. :)
every one always says they have trouble starting to 450's....i got a 07 CRF 450 and it will start first kick most of the time...no priming choking or anything
I bought an 04 crf a couple of months ago, first bike :D
I found a couple of turns on the throttle before kicking normally fires it up ok when cold but after riding for a while it's a prick. Got stuck in the bush for about 2 hrs trying to start it on my first ride. Was nearly enough motivation to buy a dinger..... nearly :D
starts are easy if know a little, all you need to know is basic mechanics & how engines work and what they need, first things learning about carburation & how much of a prick it is.
only problem i have with starts with my 426 is if i over oil the filter & it run a de-comp lever
ok i just bought a used 04 yzf 250 and its a bitch to start... it has one of those pressure realease things... im pretty new to riding so dont know to much lol... so what i seen is kick 5 times holding that pressure realease.. full throttle it then just kicck it over like normal 2 stroke is this all correct?? pls msg me back!!! lol =)
If you are just riding and racing motocross, and are a serious racer, and don't mind doing a lot of maintenance on your bike, then go with the CRF (I would get an 08 CRF, the 09 has some issues). If you do a lot of off road riding, and not just motocross, and don't want to do much work on your bike, then go with the YZF.
@motomc65 actually if your racing and in the market for a newer bike he's right the 09 had problems but on my honda it was harder to start cold but the easyist to start when it stalled
oh ok so you have to push down the kickstarter, ok thanks ill keep that in mind for next time

Wrong start!! the right way is push the kick a bit over the top compression, let the kickstarter return and push it.

Every 4 stroke is a little different, and if your vavles are out of adjustment, then no mater what you do, it could be hard to start.
When cold try 1 or 2 full throttle pumps, then kick with NO throttle. When hot, don't use any throttle, but use the hot start lever if needed.
motomc65 2 years ago
@motomc65 i like hondas no need for hot start
