@wannawatchu66 That's right...Bob Long! I remember him very well. I know he stayed with the station after they became KSEE, but I don't remember when he left. I can still remember the station plug...I think it may have been his voice, but I'm not sure..."This is Channel 24...KMJ-TV, Fresno."
I think there was a morning sign-on where the bee woke up. I definitely remember this sign-off when I was in grade school in the mid-70s and early 80s.
I remember falling asleep with the tv on in my room, and then being startled awake by the bee waking up and a man's voice saying "This is KMJ TV," etc. I also remember during the sign-off, at the very beginning, that same man's voice was dubbed in, saying, "KMJ TV 24 is signing off the air." Weird how that stuff sticks with you. The bee was cute but long before I ever saw "Poltergeist," I was always extremely creeped out as a kid when a TV station would sign off for the night.
Like I said...way before Poltergeist, TV sign-offs, even the Channel 24 bee, always gave me a very unsettling feeling! KFSN Channel 30 had a creepy sign-off too, back in the 70s (when they were still CBS!). Maybe I found it creepy because usually when I was watching the station sign off, I was the only one in the house who was still awake!
HAHAHAHA...that is hilarious. No, they did not use the Oberti Olives guy in their sign-off! They had this music that I think was supposed to be soothing, but it was creepy sounding, and it played in the background while the announcer (the guy who did most of the announcing for KFSN) said they were signing off, and that comments could be directed toward blah-blah at blah-blah office. Al Radka! Hilarious!
Did you ever see the Oberti Olives commercial where Al Radka was dressed in a Mr. Magoo-style nightdress and stocking cap, and he was lying in bed dreaming of Oberti Olives? He was supposedly asleep and in his sleep, he was murmuring, "Oberti Olives...Oberti Olives..." and a bubble appeared above his head, to show what he was dreaming about, and it was a can of Oberti Olives. Hilarious. That man was a character.
You won't believe it but I was thinking of that exact ad when I wrote that reply! I can even remember the Oberti Olives song that he sang in another ad. (I guess once something like that gets in your head it doesn't go away). Al Radka WAS a character - a Fresno legend and icon of a bygone era. I remember him hosting the late "Fright Night" movies. I wish I could find some of his old clips to post.
That woudl be great. Fresno in the 1970s and 1980s was a great place...and I for one still think it is a great place! I wish I could find clips of the opening of "Creature Feature" that used to be on Channel 26 in the 70s and 80s...either on Friday or Saturday night. I think it came on at 10:00. My brother and I enjoyed it so.
@brooke050870 My parents and I lived in Mariposa and Catheys Valley in '75-'76, and used to watch Fresno TV. For news, it was KMJ-TV with (in those days) Bob Long and Sandy Eng.
Fresno sucks. I ought to know, I lived there when I was a kid!

I remember staying up trying to watch this when i was smaller..

Actually, this isn't Scoopy. Scoopy was the mascot appearing in McClatchy newspapers (Fresno and Sac Bees). THIS bee's name was "TB."

What's About From Cartoon Network?

In case anyone asks, that's Scoopy (The Fresno Bee) in this sign-off film. KMJ was a McClatchy station at the time.

Yes, I remember that, too. That clip is even more rare to find than the sign-off.

I never made the "Poltergeist" connection. Maybe that's why nobody does sign-offs anymore!

I think the world would be a better place if we had more people like Al Radka in it.

I'll second that thought. I'll be offline 'til after Christmas but I'll try and find some more vintage Fresno clips to post next week.
pmam2008 2 years ago
I can't wait. Merry Christmas to you!
brooke050870 2 years ago
Thanks! I hope you had a Merry Christmas, too.
I found and posted a clip from a special that has the KMJ-TV sign-on. There's a few more neat clips I'll have to post later on.
pmam2008 2 years ago
Wow...I just watched it! It was great, thank you for posting it!
brooke050870 2 years ago
Some local tv stations will sometimes still sign off at night if only one day a week thats it.
acetrain81 2 years ago
any clips of when Bud Elliott joined in 1987?-the best years for that station.
i loved this sign off
deckard97 2 years ago
'fraid not. All I found was that Bob Long/KSEE Anniversary special from 1993.
pmam2008 2 years ago
What a cute little sign-off. Nowadays, TV is 24/7.

Wasn't there also a morning sign-on clip that had the Bee waking up and getting out of bed?
pmam2008 2 years ago
KOVR in Sacramento used that same Sign-Off Bee film clip last posted a year ago
