Way to much airplane for civilians.Wether at an air race or airshow civilians keep augering in whats left of the warbirds this is becoming more dangerous as these pilots have more money than skill they quickly end up in trouble how long before they slam one into the crowd just a matter of time.Money is not a shortcut to experiance.
@19thSFGA Too much airplane for most civilians. Some are as good as some military pilots, but I stress the two "some". Compare the Breitling jet team (some ex-military some civies) to certain military pilots. I feel the civie/non-civie gap is smalest among helicopter pilots (comercial helicopter pilots such as oil rig maintenance, logging industry and power cable maintenance pilots).
man. I remember watching miss ashley 2 go down. I got really sick that day. Cant imagine what it was like to see this right infront of the stands. I guess its a price to pay for the thrill. rip.
I witnessed a collision between two racers at Reno in just about the same position around 1980; one instant fatality, the other a few hours later in hospital. I turned my head just in time to see the fireball plunging to the ground. Due to the low altitude at which the racers fly, unless one happens to have a camera already trained on the aircraft, one will miss the entire event. It's over in a second or two.
@umahuma4 same here i have always wanted to be a racers since i was like 3 and 11 years later (im 14) i still want to even with all the horror crash videos as long as i dont fell it, thats how i want t go
@devine666darkness Amen and amen! Can't ask for more than a quick death while doing what you love. Don't feel bad for those who are gone, and pray for the families who are left behind.
This is the first time I have seen this or any other video displaying the crash that my cousin Brad Morehouse died in. I loved Brad with all my heart no one could have asked for a better friend, cousin or confidante. He was my dad's hunting partner and good friend. He was an honest businessman and perfectionist. If any one knew Brad you always went away from him smiling. I miss him soooo much. Thank you for letting me share.
Thanks for the comment, I , like every pilot, share your loss. I just got home from this years event and luckily it was accident free. The Jet class thrives and has become a big part of this event, I wish I had met your cousin another way.
where one pilot dies another blooms!! R.I.P. Brad we will all miss you, i had the joy of seeing him fly and i have been there for a long time watching people fly!!
@TheJapanChannelDcom I'm not sure you'd get ALL the rush but you'd definately get more than a simple cross country, ascend, level off, cruise, descend, aproach, land.
It always seems that Someone loses their life every year at the Reno Air Races. It's like playing Russian Roulette if your a pilot. Only so many times can you come to Reno >.> Could you imagine Voodoo coming down. >.>
@MrRokNRoll It certainly is a spectacular way to go, and you're doing what you love. It's the way I'd chose. Very sad to see someone loose their life though. But at least it wasn't from some horrid lingering illness, quick and doing what one loves.
Yeah, some have hot seats, however, this is a sport thats nearly twice as fast as nascar, they really dont have time to eject. besides that, theyre looking to strip down planes to make them as fast as possible.
These type of crashes will always occur in the sport theres just no way around it an element of danger is what draws alot of people to it its been like this since the races were held in Cleveland way back when as a matter of fact it was a terrible crash back then that got the races cancelled there and eventually saw them opening up in Reno its part of the sport like ANY racing there is danger involved its sad when it happens but its unavoidable at times
Wow that is sad to have your death viewed by 156,000 people on Youtube. Well I am still glad they have the Reno Air Races. Anyone reading this should go this year. The Unlimited class will not be around forever. They don't make Merlin engines anymore and there are only so many left. Same for the Pratt and Whitney radials. So go enjoy that sound while it is still around...
I agree, I have been going for 15 years and though I have witnessed a few fatal crashed this is not the reason to go, and is not the reason I posted this. It displays the danger and courage involved in this sport, much like car racing. But you are right that it is an amazing thing to see and hear when those engines make the turn from the Valley of Speed and go past the stands.
Check out NASA's wake turbulence tests. there on youtube. I was sitting in a booth at this race. They came around for the first lap and he did a complete roll. It was so perfect it almost looked intentional. As soon as he corrected he seemed to high speed stall after several quick up-down pitches. The plane landed perfectly flat on the runway, but with alot of force. I believe he may have over corrected. Im sure the controlls on those jets are extrememly sensitive, especially at those speeds.
Anything moving fast through the air has more air resistance - simple. But when it gets into wake turbulence, it begins to flutter because of this effect. Eventually, it gets to a point where the the whole aircraft is pitching up and down, up and down. I tried this on a flight simulator in similar circumstances, Although I could save it because I was high enough to deploy a chute to control it, then bring the chute back in, put some spoilers on and pull up.
You don't even sound like you KNOW what wake turbulence is smart guy.. wake turbulence is air displaced by the plane however what is truly a killer is the vortex of air both from air displaced by the tip of the wings and Jet Wash from large aircraft, that can flip/roll other planes close behind or even rip apart smaller planes that get caught in it.
air displaced by the aircraft AHEAD of him . Similar to running over the wake caused by a boat your following . Wake turbulence in this case was fatal not necessarily because of it per say; but because he didn't have the altitude to recover from it. It's a wonder things like this don't happen more often at the races.
Yes - I do know what wake turbulence is. Just like normal turbulence, just stronger. When you hit something at high speed it can have bad consequences. Take riding a bike for example, if you were going pretty fast and you hit a small-ish rock, you hit it with such force that it has an effect on your bike's manouvering, which will in turn crash (probably). It can have different effects though, like what you said, but my reasoning is with a head on hit with wake turbulence, which effects pitch.
Thanks to all for your comments, if anyone else has photos or video, please send along or post. It is helpful that we all understand and learn from these accidents.
i hate it when people bash on air racing, just like cars their are risksand everyone knows it, my family has been going to the air races since before i was born, thats more than 17 years... my uncle has worked it since the 70's every year!
