  • He was a great actor, unjustly blackballed by hollywood and the US government as a socialist yet he loved America. Imagine Peace.

  • that man should be alive now, when we need him the most

  • I want to give this speech to people of D.P.R.Korea all of them today.

  • watch?v=DXCONIKJ0Hk

  • play it with /watch?v=Z0kGAz6HYM8 :D :D :D

  • "We think too much and feel too little." Beautifully succinct.

  • I think Charlie Chaplin was a Baha'i!

  • For those with a heart, a wonderful speech.

  • one of the greatest speech

  • Its sad, the vast majority of people of any race and culture are cool in their own way. Its always these self inflated, overly vocalised minorities (by that I mean fringe groups, not races) that cause conflict. The majority of people just want to live their lives and feed their families

  • Anyone think 1:51 to 2:15 sounds slightly prophetic? He could very well be talking about the present day.

  • Over-rated portrayal and self-important philosophizing, I prefer the straighforward bombast of Moe Howard's portrayal - and he was Jewish. His "Hailstone" is much funnier, and the satire was some months before "The Great Dictator."

  • Anyone know when the googel-machine started posting in the comments - who put what on their "watch later" list? kinda-F'ed up!

  • nice,

  • i dont agree with much of what hes saying.

  • this was one of the best ends ever

  • This is a speech in a movie from 75 or 80 years ago. Its a pretty good speech when you think of it that way. The way it remains current enough to be relevant in these very different times. I challenge myself you and anyone else to write something for a movie today that is as important 80 years from now. As relevant.

  • Profound

  • wow his voice gives me chills

  • This film was a classic example of western propaganda (combating Goebbels at the time). Disguise as entertainment, belittle your opponent etc etc. I think it was horrifically slanted but still a good film :) That's my opinon. Also if you study closely enough you'll find that the Nazis weren't all evil, and the allies CERTAINLY weren't all good. The same bad men rule today, they just wave different flags, and speak different tongues. My $0.02.

  • @OneEyeWonderWeasil No not all them were bad, a lot of them didn't have a choice really. And yes some of the allies and some of the American's too did a lot of pretty bad stuff in and after the war. "The same bad men rule today, just wear different flags". Hit the head on the nail there.

  • That was BEAUTIFUL!!!! WOW...

  • where where in GODs name can we find a great leader to speck like that..where...it was fantastic...

  • @fighter8110

The germans had one in the past.. Too bad he used it for a different agenda.

  • • These things are only possible when we have rid the world of the Monetary system. Only then will humanity be truly free. Please do not fear the change that is coming, all humans are born to do good, in the main it is their nuture and environmnent that leads them to deviance. Please research. Let us not judge one another and let us learn to have compassion and understanding for our perceived enemies, who don't really exist.

  • Hear the sane individual who

stepped foot in the now messed

    up Carolina Theater -

  • I believe i was born in the wrong time, I'm an anachronism, I abhor the movies of today. No substance, no dialogue to be found. I challenge anyone to name a movie within the last twenty years that touches on the human condition with such accuracy. Consumers, the lot of us!!

  • @rangerschultz i believe there's several, i mean doing what you love that challenges the mindset of others, i think there's several even if they aren't American. To me i'd say School Of Rock, that's just my opinion, because it's real, it's life, doing what you love without the opposition of the media, the mainstream, and so on.

  • Great great speech. I have to give him a standing ovation for that. :)

  • Oh, and also, another reason why there is no hope, because the people that aren't apathetic and that actually do care fight each other like idiots. Examples? See below.

  • I used to think there was hope for humankind but now I realise that there is not. This is because people are apathetic. People have just enough to be satisfied. So just give up hope everyone, this world is fucked, we are fucked, this is as good as it's going to get. If it improved it will only improve slightly, if it gets worse it will get worse dramatically. There's no such thing as peace just half time between wars. There's no such thing as love and kindess when there isn't enough food.

  • Somebody is saying words just like these tonight in Egypt.

  • @AmericanPowerBase Nice and true.!! Bravo!!

  • pure poetry fills me with love and hope

  • Great speech! Wake up America and this speech was long before Dr. Martin Luther King. Listen to the message you fools! Hate will brake this nation of greed, lust and envy. Wake up before it's to late.

  • @AmericanPowerBase The first response of the intellectually challenged is to resort to insults. I won't argue the point with you, you have shown me that you are an ignorant simpleton who wouldn't listen to reason or logic. I leave you with yourcesspool you call a brain.

PS America has probably done more to aid the cause of tyranny than any other country since nazi Germany

  • GREATEST - SPEECH - EVER.

Charlie Chaplin wrote it, and Charlie Chaplin meant it. It may be in a movie, but so was jesus, Doesn't make it any less real to those who want to belive. He gave us Laughter, Tears, and the gift of thought, All of which are real. Charles Chaplin didn't produce movies, he produced preformances. and what is life but on big play?

  • Greatest speech of the 20th Century

  • @AmericanPowerBase IT wasn't His FAULT...? NO... Shame on YOU for your IGNORANCE... about the RULE OF LAW...! Or perhaps YOU also are IGNORANT of "Roberts Rules of Order?" Funny how all the Liberals MISS such Things...! ...LOL! ...LOL! ...LOL! ...LOL! ...LOL!

  • a man truly after my own heart

more people should see this speech and see his emotion, and understand peace and humanity the way he did.

everything he says in this speech is true, regardless of what others say. we all must overcome our hatred and learn to live and help one another as brothers, or we shall truly destroy ourselves.......not with bullets or guns, with hate.

  • But the IMAM OBAMA... Only Voted PRESENT... while in Congress...!

  • I feel pity for the 8 ppl who dislike this speech! this speech is relevant today and always will be!! GREAT SPEECH!!! :)

  • Caution. The most dangerous lies are those that sound true and good to the casual ear. "A world where science and progress will lead to all men's happiness" is the lie that led to many deaths at the feet of progress. Many good things can come from science and as many evil things. Those who depend on science and progress for happiness will be as disappointed as those who seek it in money and power.

  • 8 people hate mankind.

  • Do you think it is true? "We want to live by each other's happiness not by each other's missery." It is a nice thought. It may be hard to believe sometimes. But all in all, I believe it.

  • harm sorry

  • words do more ahrm then guns and tanks!!!!

  • Ahh they don't make actors like this anymore>

  • @Insidiousemoboy1 said, "Ahh they don't make actors like this anymore." It is true. You don't see such performances in the modern era.

  • i love chaplin.

    he is so compassionate.

i think he was compassionate even toward the nazi in this speech.

    he is a great man.

    filled with love.

  • Who is today Dictator: Capital concentrated in the hands of the few... down with corporate democracy

  • Licensed suffrage, via testing, is the key to responsible government. Permit the fool to vote and the ability to influence policy vanishes.

  • @WorthyTraitor And who decides who is worthy of enfranchisment? One man, one vote works to lessen at all cost tyranny of any form, even the benevolent sort. Look at the US health care reforms, all those people campaigning against a measure to improve the lot of poorer people.

  • Chaplin: 1

    Hitler: 0

  • best speech ever

  • Sir Charles Chaplin must have been very brave to fight against the Nazis. This speech deserves our applause.

  • undoubtedly the greatest speech in cinematic history

  • 60 years later, we as americans must listen to this speech and become inspired to do something in the name of goodness

  • 7 people pressed the wrong button.

  • The great thing about this speech is that Chaplin himself truly hated luxury and never allowed it to enter his life, unlike so many others that welcome it as soon as the possibility presents itself.

“The saddest thing I can imagine is to get used to luxury.”

  • I read the real reason Chaplin went ahead and made this movie was he was completely outraged when he heard that Hitler copied his mustache style to use Chaplins popularity to endear himself to Germans.. Chaplin went and got himself some epic revenge. They said Hitler actually saw this movie TWICE but passed it off as Jewish propaganda as he thought Chaplin was a Jew.

  • @JamesTKirkCobain i think you read wrong, check out Chaplins autobiography, its a great book to read but could shed some light for you as to why chaplin made this film

  • EVERYONE SHOULD WATCH THIS....I'm gonna put some fragments in my music too!

    LOVE AND LIGHT TO EVERYONE

  • *sniff* Hitler was a wonderful person!

  • *sniff* The congress are wonderful people!

  • Its just so unbelievable that in the present day a speech from so long ago is still so relevent to our lives today.

Wake the up people and see whats happening to you and your children. Research read. Turn off your popular newscasts and find your information independently from reliable sources.

  • the chaplin few of us knew. funny how much of it still rings true today.

  • Thank you very much Charly in the name of God !!!

I call the wind for you ***

  • Great :)

  • Definitely one great scene from one great film! And a heck of a speech! Hurray for Charlie Chaplin!

Sem dúvida uma grande cena de um grande filme! E um discurso brutal! Viva Charlie Chaplin!

  • Thanks for posting this in full!! a lot of ppl cut it off!! I am linking this one on my Hollywood Legends website.

  • GREATEST speech of all time!! Hail Chaplin!! You are SOO SOO missed!! We need you now-a-days!!

  • thanks for puttin this up...great movie...amazing speech.

  • This is not Just a Movie, it is very important to remember when watching any part of this movie, that it was written, filmed and published before the first gunfire of the WW2 was shot.

Also important is that at that time, the Nazi party was welcome in the US as a diplomatic and political contact, so this movie is not just an amazing prediction of what came after, it also goes agains a great number of contemporary interests.

It is brilliant in every way.

  • my god i am crying!!!

  • This is a moving speech for anyone time and place.

  • This is Charlie Chaplin speaking the "Jewish Barber" playing the "Great Dictator" - but the words are from Chaplin's heart:

"Now let us fight to fulfil that promise. Let us fight to free the world, to do away with national barriers, do away with greed, with hate and intolerance. Let us fight for a world of reason, a world where science and progress will lead to all men's happiness."

  • How cleverly ironic and true this video is.

  • All those who seek to imprison humanity, to bind our minds; will find that they shall be struck down. In the end the best in us shines bright. Those who would capitalize on the evil that man can do; will find that in the end they will be destroyed. This goes for anyone Preachers, Fascist etc..

  • Wow people use these comments for just about any agenda dont they? And I guess just about anyone can twist this speech to serve any purpose.

Just enjoy it as it is. Its words are true for all of us. And do not stone someone or condemn anyone if their beliefs do not match yours.

    UNITE!!!

  • sorry but how can you listen to that speech and think that man needs to ask help from jesus. He says very clearly in the 17th chapter of Luke "the kingdom of God is in the hand of man." Used in context he means stop expecting us to be saved but save ourselves. Glory can only be achieved thru the good works of man. Glory will be achieved when we create it here that will be true glory.

  • Jesus said without Him we can do nothing. He said none were good but God.

  • seems silly to ask forgiveness for being created but hey sounds to me that you dont celebrate your faith but mourn it. now you said it remember man is sinful couldnt agree more but that means that book you say is good was created by sinful men so i wouldnt hold to much stock in its words.

  • Sure man can do good...he's created in the image of God. However, he is corrupted by sin and his good deeds always are impure in some way. God's holiness is beyond us but hHe offers to give it to us through faith in Christ. I celebrate that.

  • @pennylaneproductions

I am sure that you are a holy man,as are most who evangelize because of goodness. but what works for you works because it is what you grew up with. it represents your schema and perspective on life. many do not share this view. you must be willing to compromise on a civic level to accomplish the peace you dream of. even if a messiah surfaces, there will never be a day when all humanity sacrifices everything the have known.

  • This speech is cute.

  • Did you saw the full movie or just saw this part?

  • Very scarry thgat so many commentators here seem to think this "speech" is meant to be taken literally and seriously as a call to action. Do you all not understand that the movie, and the speech in which it occurred was an ironic spoof of Hitler?

  • Yes, I do take this speech literally, seriously, and as a call to action. It does not matter what the movie was intended as, for the message in these words is what is truly important. Someday a leader will come who will guide humanity into a wondrous future of love and equality. I only hope I will live to see that day.

  • The leader you are looking for will come...we refer to him as Antichrist. He will seemingly have all the answers, but as Chaplin said, he LIES! After him, Jesus Christ will reign...then there WILL be peace.

  • its a moive plese chill its not hitler its charly chaplen

  • I think the speech *is* to be taken literally, EmitFlestiKY - the plot of the film involves a Prince-and-Pauper style case of mistaken identity, and so the character giving the speech is in fact a victim of the regime whose leader he resembles.

  • @digsy1917 the speech is literal and directed at the viewing audience/world also if you like chaplin read his autobiography

  • @digsy1917

The speech has no literal meaning. Read "Tyranny of Words" and then come back and rewatch this video. You'll be amazed of how empty and disappointing it is going to sound to you after reading this book.

  • @aikenbcd

"Our knowledge has made us cynical, our cleverness hard and unkind. We think too much. And feel too little."

We may define abstracts differently, but that does not mean that they cease to exist. Freedom may be an abstract but you would still miss it in it's absence. You shouldn't judge how he would look upon the speech after reading the book, because you cannot know. That said, the speech is perfectly fine to me.

  • @AkimboJoe:

Freedom can mean everything from putting you in a concentration camp to free up space for those "worthy" of it to taking away your posessions and splitting them evenly among people. Freedom basically translates to: "A state of affairs that I am in comfort with". Wherever you can complain about a lack of freedom it is because someone else's freedom is getting in your way. In every society there are always going to be people that are losers and don't feel free at all.

  • I believe that too, but imagine how different the world would be if this had happened...

  • This 7 minutes will go down as one of the most important and significant passages in the history of filmmaking, no matter how long that history is! My heart fills with hope and my eyes with tears every time I hear it!

  • i love this

  • Perfect. Absolutely perfect.

  • but he killed 9 million innocent people, despite if anything, he was a part of the nwo. heres a quote from hitler "communism is a jewish conspiracy", heres a line from the protocols of zion "communism is a jewish conspiracy" coincidence? i think chapman was showing us how a passionate speaker using these words can manipulate anyone into a dictatorship.

  • PEOPLE PEOPLE now go and see HITLER as channeled by winged of Desteni productions. you will start to understand very much and why he was potty. Mostly cos he could see what the NWO were and are still up to. 15 vids listen and please try to hear

  • Wow. That all I can say about this.

  • Both this film and "The Mortal Storm," starring Jimmy Stewart and also released in

'40, showed people "why we should fight(as in Capra's short film)."

Hopefully, you mean Jewish barber or you encouraged that reply 7 posts back.

  • After that speech the USA trowed him out of the country! I dont think I ever have heard a greater speech!

  • @tazmhs We need to learn from this, because this is what's partially wrong with our country. America is doomed if they don't change soon

  • this speech is truly beautifull, its such a shame that 60 years this vision of life still hasnt come into fruision..makes you wonder if it ever will

  • One of the best speeches in cinema !

People : don't forget what Chaplin says here, this speech is still relevant today !

  • ilove this speech. i watch every day when i come online. however, i have quistion. where do we draw the line between dictatorship and democracy? keep in your head Hammas in palastine was elected democtatic election and after all they terrorists?

  • Don't think this speech is about democracy specifically. It's about peace, freedom, liberty and humanity. In answer to your question I think you are mixing democracy and its drawbacks with dictatorship. Democracy has its own flaws. You mentioned Hamas but I'd say what about G.W. Bush? It's still democracy but people made a mistake. So did Palestinians.

  • @DarxideWarrior

The Palestinians are much like Germany 1918. The people are being contained and restricted by Israel. When people are pushed into a corner they usually turn to the loudest person in the room and unfortunately that person is not always the best.

  • @DarxideWarrior Don't forgot that Bush was never really elected, but selected.

  • @somalixoogsato why do you call Hammas terrorists? ... to the palestinians they are not terrorists. They are fighting for them. They are exrtemists. If not for Israels illegal siege on them they would not have the power they have now, they pull amongst the people. Democracy is flawed because people are flawed.

  • @somalixoogsato Hamas are not terrorists, they're fighting the occupiers, the people who occupy Palestine are terrorists and the people who call Hamas "terrorists" & support the occupiers are terrorists.

  • @Hesam0000

this is unfair. the Israeli's have foregone their spirituality and their love, and after everything the Zionists went through not only in Europe, but throughout the world in the last 2000 years, I forgive their trespass. they must be willing to compromise, and I know that the extreme Orthodoxy of Israel prevents that-- but so does the extreme religious of Arabs in Palestine.

lets not forget that both parties have equal claim to the land.

  • @bobmcrackin O, pleaseeee, you forgive their trespass?! last 2000 years?! You forgive because it's not your home getting invaded, it's not your child getting shot. How can they pour 7.2 million people into a land where in 1890 only 30,000 jews lived in? Don't believe that "Exile" BS for a minute. First of all what happened 2000 years ago has nothing to do with today or else Persians now owned from india to Greece! Secondly, local jews freely lived in Palestine because they owned their land.

  • @bobmcrackin I wouldn't call it "Equal claims" because in the last 1000 years there has always been about 8 to 1 Arab to jew ratio, in 1890 there were 30,000 jews & 250,000 Arabs lived in Palestine & under British occupation no one was against jews living there if they wanted to but they didn't want to leave their nice homes in Europe. Even at equal division there should be equal access to the sea, to the holly sites, to Qods/jerusalem & recognition of democratically elected regime of Palestine.

  • @Hesam0000

my friend, I agree with you. Israel has stepped out of bounds, certainly. For example, the Golan Heights should be given back to Syria-- to occupy it there is warrant, but there is none to annex it.

but listen, the Jews were Canaanites too. the jewish empires and the culture generated thrived strong long before Islam even existed. you are right about calling historical claim, we live in a world very different from that ancient one, but Jews have just as much right to be there

  • @bobmcrackin It's lot more than Golan Heights. If ownership rights of 2000-3000 years ago (Canaan) had any value today then my old country Iran could've now claimed ownership to about 15-20 countries from tajikestan,to India, to Egypt, to Israel to southern Europe,so that's a void claim.A "jewish empire" never existed until today. At 1 time jewish rulers controlled some of that barren desert of Amman & Jordan. As far as "the right to be there" no one ever denied that, but not this way.

  • @somalixoogsato This speach was cencured. The key message was cut out. North American democratie has nothing to do with democratie. I urge you to visit Wikipedia and to look up information regarding the french civil war. Liberte, fraternite et equalite. After WWII the German people insisted on not having any knowledge of the concentration camps (wir haben dass nicht gewusst) whereas this is recorded in 1940 (!) which indicates that Chaplin did have knowledge of the fact indeed.

  • @brioun1 You nitwit. Do some reserach of youir own, perhaps the bit were Chaplin stated that if he didn't think he'd have been able to make the film had he known of the true extent of the Nazis horrific crimes.

  • @somalixoogsato One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter

  • cupani, you're an idiot. In one breath, you cheer this speech and jump straight into a diatribe in which you betray every word of it.

You have learned nothing from these words - how anyone can have such a mental disconnect is beyond my ability to comprehend.

  • woaow this is the uncut speech. ni the us versino of the movie until final of the 60s the speech part where he speaks about the soldiers were cut off.. :-) cool...

  • The earth is getting poorer and simply cannot provide for everyone, much longer anyway.

  • The earth is rich in abundance. The only poverty is in the hearts and minds of humans who will not see it!

  • this is one of the greatest speeches ever made

  • all these people with thumbs down are still unconcious and really need to "wake up" to whats going on in the world i thought this speech was amazing givess us hope for a better future.

  • this is a very good speech you right

  • dude, when you write a speech addressing a nation, you really should be obvious. but he's being subtle in a pretty damn good way. he doesn't just go out, say "have hope for a better day" and leave, but he flat-out tells them the potential of earth and humanity itself, and gives hope.

  • ummm, the Muslims? hmmm I thought this was more directed towards Bush and the Illuminati and those in favor of what they are doing...silly me

But still I stand unchanged. Muslims are not behind what is going on...wake up and smell the coffee burning.

  • facepalm.jpg

  • Your supporting the other side of the same coin! Don't you get it yet?

  • Said Pharoh. Happy Passover!

  • No, only your attitude!

  • This speech always chokes me up.

  • I really loved it =).

  • great speech. shame itll never happen

  • It is like what is happening in our time. We have far too much hatred and far too little love and goodness.

  • your so right, i try to keep love in my heart insted of hate.

  • let his words guide us to the future..

  • Truly a great speech. He should have been prime minister of England after Churchill. Chaplin was not just a great comedian, but he was also a great and intelligent man. A true legend!

  • Great speech. Top marks for posting. Check out my MTV generation version on my channel.

  • Thanks for having the entire speech. Most cutoff just before he says "Hannah." And I doubt the individual below will read this ever, but this was solely of Chaplin's creation. He was not under anyone's control. He did spread propoganda. If publicly expressing distaste for the way one man runs a country is propoganda, then we are both guilty of it. We all are.

  • One of the best speech ever!
