this episode of Iron Chef French Hiroyuki Sakai vs. Challenger Ron Siegel was for me the best episode of the whole Iron Chef series. thanks for posting this episode archo89.
Lovely, quiet and humble American chef. He used to come to my knife store in Santa Rosa, California. Will have to try to get in a meal with him the next time I go to San Francisco and have the budget for it!
Any show where Bobby Flay is an iron Chef sucks to some degree; Iron Chef America just lacks the panache of the Nippon version. By the way though, Italian chef challengers got royally shafted on this show.
It's funny. When I first saw this, I didn't know what French Laundry was. Now that I know it's Thomas Keller's, that was some honor to work there. Not a surprise that he competed so well and of course, won. Damn, Ron, was that really your house??? Boring!
Im actually friends with Ron, hes a good guy but the things he said in this whole episode the producers basicly made him say. Like how he was gonna "bring the gold back to the US" they had to film it so many times because he kept laughing
This is such a funny episode. Willie Brown is so funny. Did anyone notice that the chairman sounded like he called him "Lon" but had no problem saying "iron" or "lobster?"
I think he has problems saying R correctly, but he has no problem with saying L. The "lobster" was said correctly, you're right, but "iron" isn't pronounced as spelled by most English speakers (iyern), so he never really has to tackle the hard R sound, except at the beginning of "Ron", which gives him trouble.
As you say JKwoftw, even in Southern British (standard) English 'iron' is pronounced: [A:j9n]. So no /r/ to deal with!
Japanese is fine with producing /r/ for example: [koridis] (I don't know how it is spelt in standardised transcription of japanese. However, /r/ is completely prohibited in japanese in initial position: /ron/. This would explain kaga's trouble with it...
That was Battle Bacon, with chef Philippe Baton as challenger. It was done during the Nakamura era, which means that the Food Network never picked it up for dubbing :(
I like the music when Kaga's unveil the secret ingredient lolz

Why do they show him watching TV? Lol

Didn't know Ron was one of the first to work at the French Laundry. Sakai is great but anyone that comes through TFL will have some serious skills.

Is it me, or did Sakai looked at Siegel with utter disdain upon being challenged during their quick closeup shots after Siegel chose Sakai?

PLEASE bring back the original Iron Chef on Food Network. The set up is so friggin' brilliant. Every one loved watching it here in the US.
'Iron Chef America' sucks my ass :<

Yeah, ICA doesn't even show us why he or she is a worthy challenger. ICJ shows us the challenger's life story.

What does Ron say at 7:29 when he sees the lobsters? Is it "Good! Lobsters!" or "How'd my wife talk me into this?" or what?
