omfg who created Vilnius?Gediminas did its LITHUANIAN name don't make me angry with you fucking stupit comments or i will fuck every polish bastard in lithuania...
at 00:31 you "point to the hill of crosses". i thought that was located in northern lithuania near siauliau? is there another hill of crosses in vilnius?
This comment under mine comment is really racism. Vilnius was the capital of Lithuania when Poland and Lithuania created together Republic Of Both Nations from 1569(Rzeczpospolita Obojga Narodów) to 1795,partitions of Poland. After 1918 Polish and Lithuanians were want to add Vilnus to their countries. But in 1918 Józef Piłsudzki and Żeligowski declarated independence of Middle Lithuania and then in 1922 the parlament of Middle Lithuania decided to join to Poland.
small parliament of pro polish parliamentaries, of whom most were polonised lithuanian boyars, does not stand for the major voice of the people in the country, or in the city.
Poles are stupid amanals , ask from anyone outside poland , in england, russia , lithuania , germany all will tell the same thing polang stinks !!!!!! sorry for grammar errors
Ale pierdoły... Wilno jest polskim miastem, widać to na każdym kroku. Argument o j. polskim jest beznadziejny, przed Soborum Vaticanum II obowiązywała łacina...
real Poles were like 10-15% rest were Polonized local Liths. in churches and schools there were no lith language just polish. Lithuanian grammar and teaching Lith language was restricted by Russian Tzars governoment. becouse ppl hated russians they were forced to learn Polish if they wanted to go to church and let children to learn Polish if they wanna get education.
so i dont ses big deal that 50% said they are "polish" Vilnius was part of Poland just during occupation by Poles between 2 wars
fuck you stupid polish or poles,i dont care..you have your fucking willage,we have our country, thats all.we dont care what you talking,we are other country,so,bye bye!just fuck of!!!
Sure thing Espectas. From what I checked (double-checked actually) in different sources I found:
*According to polish population register from 1931 - in Vilnius there was: 54% Poles, 41% Jews and about 2% of Lithuanians. Outskirts of Vilnius and territory just around the city were pretty much the same, with some differences: 43% of Poles, 33% of Jews and about 10% of Lithuanians.
*According to the german register of Vilnius, from 1916 it looked like this: 50,2% Poles i 43,5% Jews; 2,6 % Lithuanians,1,4% Russians,1,4% Belorussians, 0,7% Germans and 0,2% others. This data contains information about the city itself, without sorrounding territory.
The city and it's outskirts were an island with large majority of Poles amongst the Lithuanian population sorrounding it.
Jus poliakai jeigu suprantama kalba nesnekesit, tai as lietuviskai snekesiu ir viskas. Ka tu ten lenkiskai suprasi... Tik svilpauja kazka... Ok. So you say that Vilnius is polish becouse most of the people were polish back in 1920? Well, what about nowdays, then? Now its 70-80% lithuanian. So doesn't it mean that it's ours now? :D
damn u are stupid missjamierose!! lithuania was never really part of poland. the where united but not really part of that. lithuanian are the best. everybo´dy loves it who sees it
Well, I don't know if that makes me "stupid". I actually met many people who were under that impression... the territory in this region changed hands so often that it is hard to understand the history... but helping to educate people on places they have never been is part of why I make these videos, so I always appreciate any insight you have.
The region wasn't changed hands so often as you may think. It has only one time been occupied by polish, then taken from the polish by the soviets and given back to Lithuania.
This polish "occupation" was not occupation in fact, but inhabitation. Vilnius + the territory around the city was almost pure polish back then. The problem was that Vilnius was the historical capital of Lithuanians and one of cultural capitals of the Poles.
@missjamierose who told you it had changed hands so many times? and yes, your knowledge of vilnius is poor aswell. a bit of current western land was under one of the teutonic orders (that was crushed later) in the 15th century. Then it was either completely occupied by russian empire or partly by germans. Its not realy that hard to understand if you try to, and dont listen to propoganda.
OK, Antanas Smetona was germanofile, like all lithuanian nationalists. From 1918 LT was extension of East Prussia. Lithuanian killed poles (like gen. Plechavicius) with German in II World War. All...
Plechavicius) i mordowali spolonizowanych litwinów?? A pomysły Smetony o królu z niemiec??
I have a lots of "deed of ownership" from Wileńskie tenements, and i will use it to retrieve mine property what was made by the hands of my grandparrents...
Until 1939: 54% Poles, 41% Jews, only 2% Lithuanian people :/ and jews spokes in polish language... so it was/is polish city... Now in Wilno live 20 % of poles, but around Wilno it is more than 70%...
Thank you for your thoughts! I do think the city had a Polish feel to it, perhaps in some of the buildings and structures. Actually even more so than Wroclaw, Poland, which was German for many years.

Of course nowadays, after 60 years the situation is completely different.
This data must have some errors as all of them have some errors. But it shows at least a little how the situation looked like back then.
By the way, I gotta visit Vilnius one day. Heard it's beautiful.
