What a great video! I used to live in Portland OR back in the 70s to early 80s and it's been wonderful to see the city becoming more and more proactive in so many enlightened ways with regard to the environment, animal welfare, healthy and conscientious living in general. Congratulations on this amazing milestone! Diana E.
Nice video, only thing is the mention of the community looking out for feral or stray cats. I live in apartment complex, and try to help stray cats, but the people around here are mean, and don't want anyone feeding the cats. I feel so bad for these cats, don't know what to do. The mean people throw out the cat food I put out, and tell me not allowed to feed/help cats. Apparently this community is not a part of the overall community mentioned in the video.
Cats are listed in the TOP 100 WORST INVASIVE SPECIES OF THE WORLD, in the "Global Invasive Species Database". If your government enforces invasive species laws then it is against the law to NOT destroy cats when found away from safe confinement and out in non-native habitat. It is your civic and moral responsibility to do so, someone's pet or not. If you criminally irresponsible pet-owners want to keep your invasive-species pets, keep them confined properly. Releasing them violates these laws.
The general rule-of-thumb in the USA is that if your land is in an area zoned for livestock (e.g. you can keep chickens, etc.), then it is perfectly legal to destroy any animal, someone’s pet or not, that is threatening the safety of your own animals. The only animals exempt from you taking immediate action, legally, are those listed on endangered or threatened species lists. Since cats are listed as a highly destructive invasive-species it is your civic and moral duty to destroy them on sight.
