  • dang i think he broke a sweat!!! hes amazing!!!

  • Tour de force, Andrew. However, bumble bees aren't doing so well these days - how about Plight of the Bumble Bee (quaver = 88) by On-Second-Thoughts-Put-Your-Corsets-Back-On-Dear.

  • That guys LIPS are soooo massive!

not because he's black...because I play the bassoon and I know how much of a workout it is for your lips lol

  • it's cool that he can still maintain his tone with the tough fingerings. :)

  • amazing

  • I want to learn how to play the basson. They dont teach that at my school. I only play the clarinet.

  • I play clarinet too. I had to teach myself basoon. I'm still not very good. Takes alot if practice. But my school band needs me as a clarinet more athan a basoon :(

  • i play clarinet i would rather play it then the basson but thats just me i guess

  • @artfreaksue It's less of a matter of if your school "teaches" it, and more of a matter of if the school has a bassoon on hand. I got lucky, mine does :)

  • Comment removed

  • haha you inspire me hahah XD thats great i just started playing bassoon

  • Does anybody else realy dislike the piano accompaniment? I know it's original arrangement but still it dosn't sound half as good as it should do with the amazing bassoon playing......

  • I have to give you your props dude, i couldn't play it. lol

  • Great bassoonist, great piece, great talent and apparently a great character also!

    Great video. ;)

  • Well did you guys think it was easy to play this song and make it very clear? I mean playing fast notes on the bassoon and making them clear is like the hardest thing ever.

  • it sounds like a bumblebee

  • Is that a plastic reed?? It does not sound too good.. :/

  • I completely agree. It doesn't sound that good at all. And it even seemed like he was having some fingering troubles. idk. just my opinion.

  • well, DUH, he was having some fingering troubles, it's flight of the bumblebee.

  • @peacelovebassoon0107

    and the bassoon...

  • probably just the camera. but that guy is still insane!

  • Heck yeah! A brother playing bassoon! Boy that was a tough crowd but you taught them something. And that was a kick *ss performance!

  • Masahito Tanaka plays this much, much better.

Also the chromatic notes near the end sounded a bit strange...

  • That's like saying you're a better football player than someone in the nfl because you play touch football. Gtfo the internet before you pollute us with your stupidity.

  • yep messy

  • good job that shit aint easy

  • ze BEST)

  • acually 1018mus it was originally a bassoon song until it was adapted by a flutist

  • I wish I did!!! I play the bassoon too")

  • does anyone know where i can find the sheet music for this piece for bassoon?

  • GO BASSOONS!!!

  • not at all accurate. i almost couldn't recognize the piece.

  • Amazing! That sound really cool on the bassoon.

  • very nice. i'm in the eighth grade and learning level 6 music so maybe i'll be able to do that someday =]

  • im a basson! i luved it! i wanna do that someday!

i can type upside down so if you comment on my page then i can teach you.

  • Ok, I just don't think that this song should be performed on bassoon. Lol.

  • the reed sounds a bit weak as the low notes are a bit too blasty, if you know what i mean

    fitzy

  • gypsy if your complaing about how bad this video is just go watch the youtube video "Bassoon Duet, Flight of the Bumblebees" and then you'll see how bad it can be messed up i think he played the song decntly well definately check out that vid then post somethin here

  • That is awesome, bassoon is a very hard insterment. I play a bassoon too but i'm still learning. You did excelent.

  • Learning to play bassoon isn't too terribly difficult, it just takes time to learn like any other musical insturment.

  • I would disagree with this statement. As far as instruments go, bassoon is one of the hardest to play WELL. Sure, you can learn the fingerings just as easy as any other instrument (though it is harder than say, sax or clarinet), double reeds in general are more difficult. I muself play quite a few instruments, and I can tell you that bassoon is by a wide margin the most difficult I've encountered.

  • Well, I would have to agree with you there; playing the bassoon well does take some time. It took me a lot of practicing to get a good sound, anyways.

  • not true.

I was playing at a 10th grade level when I was only in 5th grade

  • Impressed with yourself?

Okay, so maybe you had uber playing technique and tone quality in the 5th grade.

For me, it took me about 6 months in the 8th grade to somewhat master the instrument.

  • touche! good point. sorry if I seem braggy!

  • Nah, you didn't really seem braggy.

  • Do you guys have any idea how difficult this is to play on this instrument? Mad props.

  • Wow... I just randomly searched this and wasn't expecting there to be a video. I'm amazed. I just started playing bassoon and can only do... maybe 4/5 scales. I need a new reed, btw.

  • that is ridiculously amazing

i wish i could play lik that :P

  • What's in your ears, may I ask?

  • I love The Flight Of The Bumble bee, but not by this instrument. I prefer the flute, the piano, the accordation... I don't like that as I don't like it played by violin, cello... Can I have my tastes or not?

  • Amazing

  • needs some work, but still wow.

  • horrible tone

  • i agree.

  • Yeah...it's not too great.

  • Faster, dude...FASTER !

  • ya fox and renard are way diff i dont really know how so but i cant play fox only renard

  • dude British black people are cool.

  • ......holy cow...YOU ARE AMAZING!!! to play something like THAT on a bassoon!????? -bows to your awesomeness-

  • Ya need to practice your scales....sloppy.

  • r u retarted u try that and see

  • that's so cool! wish i could on mine!

  • i plat the bassoon and i could never do that!!! he is awesome!

    awesome!

¡uʍop ǝpısdn ǝʇıɹʍ oʇ ʍoɥ uɹɐǝן oʇ ǝןqɐ ǝq ןןıʍ ǝʇıs ʎɯ sʇuǝɯɯoɔ ʇɐɥʇ ǝuoʎuɐ

  • it sounds like a real bee buzzing! This song on the basoon reminds you of a bee, and the same song on flute reminds you of flight.... they should play together!

  • totally! :) lol

  • idk oboe and bassoon would be awesome

  • it is possible lol this guy i no who has only just left high school can play it from memory, but it is hard

  • (O.O) wtf! HOLYYYY CRAP! AMAZING! i don't think i'd ever b as good as that.

  • :O

    IMPOSSIBLE

    xD

    excellent

  • amazing! very nice job!

  • wow im in 7th grade and i play bassoon but your great

  • i play bassoon. that's frickin amazing!!!

my dream is to get a schreiber. i'm on a harrison. =[ oh well. it's pretty good

man don't walk around with the crook [bocal] in it!!!

    but wow!

  • I play bassoon and piano, so from a musical perspective I say, "THIS IS FREAKING AMAZING!!!"

  • stop walking around with the bokal in it...

  • bocal*

  • HOLEEEEEEEEEEE CRAP!

  • i play bassoon and i also have asthma i have no problem with it. i think asthma has to do more with your mind than physical exertion

  • Just get a Moosmann, it solves many problems =D

  • horrible lol...

  • Me too Maybe one day.

  • God i love bassoon. that was so awsome!!

Wish i could play flight of the bumblebee...

  • excuse me, but Korsakov's name was Nikolaj, not Norman...

  • That's right. well done for picking up on that!

  • blight of the fumble tree is not the correct name of that composition you gonna say, not?

  • I've been self-teaching myself the bassoon for about 6 months now, and I think I should get a new bassoon because the one I use is the school's and it's really really really old and bad...can anybody recommend to me a good bassoon manufacturer? Thank you! I can't ask anybody at school cos nobody else plays the bassoon...:(

  • Fox or Reynard (same, just Reynard is a French make of Fox) are the top of the line. I have a Selmer Signet that treats me just fine.

  • That is incorrect! Fox is not that same as Renard. Renard is the semiprofessional model of bassoon by Fox!Fox only makes German system bassoons.

  • I have a Fox, but Reynard and Selmer Signet are good.

Same. I'm the only one of me at my school. It sucks.

  • If you want a really good bassoon get a schreiber

I bought mine form a guy who played with the LA philharmonic but had to quit due to asthma

i love it. great sound great feel.

    great instrument

  • what model of Schreiber do you have? the one I have is not that amazing...

  • lmao i love ur accent

  • lmao i love ur accent

  • I got the low Bb below Bass clef staff to what would be a second space G on treble from playing stuff like march of the Belgium paratroopers and Proud Heritage so much. This guy is freakin' AMAZING.

  • man i can really hear the dynamics

  • Man if i could get to playing it half as well as he does I'd be proud of myself lol.

  • wow

  • sounds eiriee'ly like an actual bumblebee....spooky that

  • AWESOME!!! I only wish we'd seen more of his fingering!! This is NO easy piece. That's quite the harness he has.

  • If any of you who thought this was bad actually played bassoon, you'd realize that this is not an easy piece. Moving your fingers and tounge that fast at the same time is extremley difficult, especially in the low register. Not to mention bassoon has some of the akwardest fingers out there. At the range he's getting up to, you have to be an expert to play it that fast. About the tone, bassoons are sharp, and always will be. Deal with it.

Great playing, now where's the sheet music? XD

  • agreed its hard on any instrument

  • nice

  • what is the range of notes?!?!?! Compared to him I can't play for sh*t

  • I say he got up to about a 4th octave D or E. I can't play that fast but I'm a 10th grader and can hit a 4th octave F.

  • I can play to B flat above the staff, and the B flat below the staff :-)

  • I can play the entire range of the bassoon low B flat below the staff all the way up to the 4th octave F natural above the staff which is way higher than the B flat above the staff. That F natural is actually in the treble clef.

  • Mad fast double tongue. He slurs most of it probably.

There's almost no time you need to hit the high f.

need to hit an E for Sarabande et Sortege though.

  • if you look at the music it is supposed to be slurred!

  • It does say that he's a "Musical Director and Conductor of the Award winning Northamptonshire Orchestral Winds" so who knows...

  • that was freaking incredible... i thought the stuff I play on bassoon was hard....

  • I think 'Stepninja' is right- I also play the bassoon and you wouldnt believe how hard it is to play fast in a dodgy key signature. Well done!

  • Wow. I can't believe a lot of you think this is bad. I've been playing bassoon for seven years, and yes, I could do this, but you have to give him credit. It's hard to move around to a lot of those weird fingerings, especially with the key signature it's in. Try playing it that fast on bassoon yourself before you make any rude comments. Bravo. Amazing.

  • he's not bad

  • omg.. if your a real musician you will realize how good he is playing this song.

If you want to see a bassoon duet that horrible screws up the song then watch the video "Bassoon Duet, Flight of the Bumblebee

Then you will definatly change your mind

  • uh...bad all the way espesuly the ton

  • ok the note hitting is nice. but the tone of the instrument is eww. improve on ur tone

  • well at least he can hit the notes even though intonation isnt very good.

but linerider u should shut up cause u couldnt even hit those notes

and it wasnt Bassey's fault that they werent together, it was the accompanist's fault

  • quite faster than all the guitar solos:D

i can play it (on the basson), but not than fast (more like slow-motion :D)

  • I was asked by my band director to double on bassoon for concert band and i did not realize how difficult it is. Im having sme trouble playing the chromatic so i cant even imagine how difficult this must be.

  • I know how you feel... I'm startin bassoon and the sharps and flats are very difficult. Out of all the instruments i play (Oboe, flute, clarinet, piccolo, and bassoon) it is by far the most difficult.

  • wonderful, just wonderful

  • Great! Some of you guys dont notice how insanely difficult that piece is. The triple douing part was awesome.

(from earlier comment) Chapstick!! lol What? u dont need chapstick!! ive been playin bassoon for 3 years. always be careful and gentle to the bassoon. And dont hold it by the bell

  • I like to use chapstick as a cheap substitute for cork grease.

  • nice

  • hey i'm going to get a bassoon from my school and learn how to play could u give me just a little advise to get me started

  • be careful when putting it together if u standing it on a table to help and i did that and i wasnt aware of a ceiling fan XD

  • omg lol. well I just started learning bassoon a little under two months ago. and you should be very careful with the bocal and reed. have a fingering chart handy, and practice constantly, and BUY CHAPSTICK!!!

  • very nice

i thought vital capacity comes with fitness...

    I dont think so now!

  • "ur no musician?" excuse me, but that was really unnecessary

  • o no! how could I!!! look if you were a musician..u could understand time....ryhtm...note spacing...intonnation...tone quality....all of which this person lacks....the only thing he does (and not very well) is move his fingers fast....technician.....not musician....

  • Maybe HE is and YOU'RE not. keep comments like that to yourself. and no shit it wasn't perfect! IT IS A FLUTE SONG!!!!!

  • way to look up a comment that was posted over a year ago lol...and I would highly suggest never commenting on a musical video after that comment...It's a flute song? Are you serious? it was originally written by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov for his opera The Tale of Tsar Saltan, in which the violin plays the piece...but that's besides the point that it's music and it can be transposed for any melodic instrument....think before you speak....

  • u can move your fingers fast but ur no musician....keep working on it....the piano accompanist was completely lost the entire time lol

  • wtf? even if it wasn't perfect that was really good

and i'd like to see YOU try. haha

  • what brand/model bassoon do you play

  • Yamaha 811 14 years old

    why do you ask?

  • omg that was amazing, I am a bassoonist myself, and that was just plan awesome. I give 5 stars!

  • Very good & impressive Andrew, you are really a joker as what B McKenzie told me..lol.Suprisingly an impromptu performance like this bothered some people so much as to comment such..I mean, playing at Carnegie at that age was awesome but what was his name?I wonder if his performances are found somewhere in the internet or music store like he claimed..would love to know his credibility.

Keep making great music & post more videos, looking forward to hear you in live performance..cheers.

  • Pretty good, especially considering the impromptu nature of the performance. And for what it's worth, bad reed aside, I love the tone concept; I really prefer a lighter sound and have put a lot of work into trying to achieve it..

  • I hate video recordings in echoey rooms, it absolutely ruins the sound performance :-(. This was a good take! It was too low quality to be able to pick out any real blunders or high points in your playing, but it was enjoyable!

I prefer the clarinet/piano arrangement of this (perhaps because I am a clarinettist), but I think for the first time ever, you convinced me that this actually can sound good on bassoon--it sounds like a bumblebee the way you play it! Nice work!

  • Now, I am not going to insult you because that would be lowering myself to a level where I don't wish to go. However, I will say this, Unless you are going to say something encouraging, don't say anything at all. You won't feel good afterwards.

  • Thank You. Andrew
