I haven't seen an american version, but I loved french one. Honestly, I do not understand this movie fully. All the allusions to a Shakespreare "Midsummer night's dream" makes movie more tangled. I simply doubt - were Max in love with Lisa when he looked for her, or simply wanted to know the truth why she had left him.

I really thought he was, but then I saw movie more times, I started to wonder.

Omg, I just noticed another detail! The rose Daniel laid on the coffin of his dead wife...is exactly the same kind as the one he gave to Lisa at the end... A death-rose, a white rose to say goodbye. Sad!

i watch this film over and over again and every time i wish i could be watching it as if it was the first time: I love it ( despite the ending...still bothers me Lisa and Max never met)

@leomatosuk Got the same feelings. The ending was very sad, but it could not be the other way. Three women were like those 3 rings... He could choose only 1 of them. And to Lisa every man was the same...

I saw Wicker Park (American' Appartment')...and the symbolism of the 3 rings was destroyed, they ommited it. Shame!

@Sharmilka Its such a shame because if L'Appartement was remade correctly it would have been ideal. However it doesn't suit Americian setting as it's too much in a European French theme which is better and more romantic.

You better watch Wicker Park, the ending of that remake makes more sense that the ending of this film. Anyway, both films are really beatiful.

That is the problem with Americans... you simply do not understand that real life is not what it might be. The original one is the french movie; beautifully made, it carries magic itself. The remake is boring, since its director made it for the American audience.

Solo dije que no tiene sentido que el tipo arriesga su relacion con su esposa y su trabajo y x ende su vida entera x el amor q siente x Monica Bellucci y que ha sobrevivido al pasar d elos años y de pronto, de un momento a otro abandona a la mujer q ama por otra tipa con la q se acosto una vez, y que para colmo lo engaño a el, a su amigo y a Monica Bellucci. yeah "l'appartement" de mimouni is so TRUE that's the real life mixed perfectly with some tragedy. The end is perfect and that's the real human relationships with a credible denouement

I only found about this film by accident when searching for French comedy films on google. But I ended up on a site dedicated to top notch French films. Read the paragraph on this film and went out and bought it. Money wellllll spent. Nothing like going out on a limb and being rewarded with a fantastic film.
