@delcshimo HIT workouts generally adhere to the one set theory, that is one working set per exercise, with minimal exercises per bodypart. This set is taken to failure or sometimes beyond with forced reps. Volume training like that which Arnold adhered to involved more sets and exercises which were not always taken to failure.
Now we have guys like Branch Warren who try to combine both. For the average man not on any pharmaceuticals this style of workout should be considered overtraining.
@xanthromera So HIT could be overtraining? But it seems minimal if its only 1 set per exercise. So for chest it could be, 1 set of flat bench, 1 set of incline, 1 set of decline and 1 set of flies. So thats only 4 or 5 sets.
It seems alot of people do 3-5 sets with maybe the last being takin to failure. Also, isnt every program suppossed to be with high intensity and going to faliure a lot. What if someone does 3-5 sets per exercise with all sets being taken almost to failure.
@delcshimo If someone's overtraining then they probably crossed over from HIT to a volume workout. If you were training chest you would probably do 2 rather than 4 exercises as there is alot of overlap. So 2 working sets but with warm-ups there might be 4 - 5 sets in total.
There are alot of volume trainees out there who stop short of truly failing, but if you don't fail in a working set then you probably wont recruit,(and hence stimulate), all available fibres.

He seems to be advocating slower sets these days with longer duration or TUL(Time Under Load). This seems to me to be more of a focus on injury prevention rather than a size gain focus. Injury prevention is paramount though.
