  • i also like teenage caveman!! great song!

  • this song kicks ass!!

  • hey everyone! I'm a solo artist who goes by the name "Keep the Fate"

And if you enjoy artists such as Beat Happening, and/or early R.E.M. you might like some of the songs i put out. I hope you'll give them a listen!

  • Both Luna and Spectrum do killer covers of this song. Check it out!

  • there is somethin attractive about the simple drone of the song. its simplicity or something...

  • no offense taken. some things are opinion daisythe grey. jnaldo kinda has it accurately said.

  • LET THEM EAT VINYL-KURT COBAIN

    truth

  • let norms come to harm

  • I do quite like this song, but it would be greatly improved if the singer didn't sound like he was depressed.

  • @daisythegrey You just don't get it

  • @1briggster I may not, I think that good vocals are something that contributes to a good song, and I did not find it here, sorry man, didn't mean to offend and shit.

  • VACCINES

  • /watch?v=k6TMXv5ci08

  • beautiful

  • That's Tim Brock leaning against that car!

  • @mattlove1 That's my dad!!!

  • @crazychiliquaker1959 No kidding! Well, your dad is the best lefthanded punk rockin composin basketball player I've ever seen

  • @mattlove1 Thanks! He's the best dad ever... :3

  • wow, this sucks. but i'm still listening to it.

  • @jnaldo227 Yeah man, I know what you mean. Bands like this dont have the over the top production, effects and studio polish, nor any amasing skills, but they do have HEARTH and thats where it really matters :)

  • Fuck this is great

  • reminds me of the movie, slacker.

  • @intermsofart It really does

    I loved that movie!

  • @IpsoFactoMusic you obviously don't get it . but its all good

  • @IpsoFactoMusic I know dude, totally cool love it <3

  • @IpsoFactoMusic

Great music man, very honest and real.

  • @IpsoFactoMusic Sounds like a nice radio station.

  • @IpsoFactoMusic if you hated it so much when you heard it, why did you look it up to listen to again? that's just stupid.

  • @itsonlynoise because when i heard it, and realized how bad it was i felt the need to share this with my friends. i posted it on my wall and received perhaps the most negative feedback. most notable comment: "i would rather sit on a bottle than listen to this shit"

  • @IpsoFactoMusic Judging by your dull, lifeless, and unoriginal musical output, of course you wouldn't like this music... Your simple taste in music also leaves much to be offered... Cmon.. Rage Against the Machine? What are you? 12? Not to mention you've got a small list of lame "frat-ska" bands going on...

  • @KevinHeaven9 I commend you on your top notch investigative abilities. Since you have nothing uploaded, and are therefore a useless part of the youtube community, I can say nothing personally to you, except that i don't feel like taking the time to listen or even look through the hundreds of shitty live bands you have on your favorite list. i suggest you check out my soundcloud page listed on my youtube page, which i keep more up to date. g'day!

  • @IpsoFactoMusic

wow dude make some friends with taste!

  • Planta carnívora con Basílica, puente y universidad.

  • i feel sorry for anyone who wasn't buying vinyl in the heyday of beat happening... cuz they were happening long before nirvana made it cool to mope around in unwashed flannel.

  • great pop song

  • Utilize is a shit word.

  • I dunno... They're from my hometown of Olympia, WA so I guess I gotta love it. (Let's go down Martin Way...) As poetry it's cool, but as music? I dunno...

  • love it :)

  • Awesome! For years I wondered who did this song. I first heard it on KXLU around 1991 or 1992. Thanks!

  • i know this town, my town!

  • this video makes me yearn for an America that probably never existed - not that I can recall.

  • Comment removed

  • My favorite band forever.

  • Death Cab For Cutie covered this. I found it on a fake version of their new album under a different name. Most of the album is old songs under different names, but four of them are songs I had never heard before. I like this version.

  • @LoneWandererDave That's how I found this song too! haha

  • I love this song. It makes me long for America, and an American experience that surely began before I had my own adult version. I heard my first cover of this by a Scottish band called Eugenius (AKA "captain america") and loved it ever since. Beat Happening's version? Fuckin' A. I think theirs is a perfect fit for a rough, raw, and honest poem, and it's now my favorite take. Thanks alot for posting.

  • it's so sad because i think he's actually trying to sound good.

  • @Deathlock257 No, Calvin doesn't try to sound good, at all. That's the whole idea of DIY indie. He is his own sound, his own baritone, as are Nancy and Bret. So please, if you're going to just make rude comments about a band that you obviously don't know very well at all, then don't say anything.

  • Nothing can compete with Calvin's baritone.

  • @catguyauble something can...a dying bull.

  • @samf727

hahah I feel bad laughing because you're a troll but that was good.

  • this song is the worst fucking song ever.

  • @samf727 Then why are you watching it? Troll.

  • @samf727 In your opinion. I don't want to get in a flame war with you. I was only wondering why you would watch a video that you don't like and leave a nasty comment about how awful it is. Now I don't want to load the comments page with arguments over whose opinion is more valid. So please, if you can't appreciate the nostalgic value that the legendary Beat Happening has to me and many others, then don't listen to them.

  • @samf727

hahaha! this band is so terrible XDDDD

  • @Deathlock257 Fuck you baker!!!

  • calvin lyrics are unstoppable

  • i do love croquet and baked alaskas. this song is beautiful.

  • one of the most perfectest songs ever wrote and recorded. it competes with wire's heartbeat and uhhmm. lets see. i dont know what all. but i love this song it;s fun and easy to play , and record, if someone put out a comp of just covers of this song it would be a box set i bet, and i'd want to be on it , and i'd listen to it over and over

  • The purest example of teenage Americana. Real indie. Seemingly innocent and pure but with a seething undercurrent of sexuality and yearning. Nothing touches Beat Happening.

  • We'll come back for Indian summer and go our separate ways

  • Damn beautiful music and video; I'm really glad I found this...

  • I actually came here because I thought it was a cover of a song by the doors with the same title......but I stayed because of the fab music :)

  • I just cannot decide whether I like this band or not. DX

  • @XxRefterxX check out the Galaxie 500 version!

  • @drkvogel i knew i heard this song before, my older brother, back in the early 90's had all the galaxy 500 albums and i heard this just now and couldnt place where i heard it before. it was them! right on, cheers from san diego

  • @XxRefterxX whats not too like, just dance

  • Well I just like the cars used in this music video.

  • Ah, Calvin.

  • so diy.... right down to calvin's haircut haha

  • This band is crack.

  • It sounds like they really utilize their limitations well, I don't know many bands that have bad guitarists, bad singers, and crap, thrift store equipment, but still manage to make fucking awesome songs. Velvet Underground, insanely awesome as they were, they had fucking backing by Andy Warhol, the fact people are calling them VU wannabes, despite the smug douchebag undercurrents that carries, demonstrates they did a pretty good fucking job in my books, considering what little they had.

  • @DantoVonArchimboldi someone likes david byrne.

  • However The Velvet Underground is boring and pretentious the Beat Happening is fun and and original.

  • Reminds me allot of the movie slacker. That's the Richard Linklater movie, not the teenage romcom.

  • @SuperGendra and thats a bad thing is it

  • @louiecostello yes. It means I'd rather listen to the original velvet underground than the wannabe. Just stating an opinion

  • @SuperGendra nah pal. on the subject, velvet underground often sound surprisingly little like the velvet underground, the feelies sound more like vu than vu haha

  • Seven people missed the Like button.

  • Very interesting band/music. Awesome song, very Velvet Underground-like.

  • wow, i can't believe i had never heard this before. its brilliant. definitely my new favorite band. :]

  • .:terrifik:.

  • amazing, a video that doesn't want to make me puke.

  • Omg memories! This song played a huge part in my childhood! BEAT HAPPENING FOREVER!!

  • this music is so real and simple, no MTV shit, fuck the "today music" this is so beautiful

  • Wow, when they say he's known for his baritone, they're not kidding!

  • Best band

  • For some, unknown reason (and a really good one it must have been) both Beat Happening and Swans were really popular in Scotland when I was a teenage (okay, I'm showing my age) in the 80's-early 90's. Thanks for posting. Ex-girlfriends and long forgotten disco dancing awkwardness are filling my thoughts. But this song is so timeless it is still so fresh. I'm off to drive my "motorbike to cemetery, Picnic on wild berries"...see you later

  • @andinoble Eugenius did a terrific cover of this song. Definitely a different feel from the original, but I dug it.

  • yes yes yes this video is so good

  • lol @ calvin's diy haircut. same approach he took with his music.

  • q buena banda realmente me gusto mucho :)

great :D nunca me habia gustado tanto una banda

  • very influential

  • I heard this song on KTRU (Rice University radio station) in 1991 or so. I remembered large portions of the lyrics and Googled it just now. The lyrics mean so much more to me now at 31 then they did at 12.

  • YES!!! AMAZING!!!

  • I was obsessed with these guys in early 90's god that was so long ago!!!!!

  • this reminds me of the Velvet underground's "Sunday Morning"

    this is a great song

  • Im obcessed with this I saw him live and hung out with him for an hour

  • even though im a guy i have a slght mancrush on calvin johnson

  • @astroboirap - I'm not sure why the 'even though I'm a guy' qualifier is needed. I'm a guy, and I have a bit of a crush on calvin too (but, then, I have crushes on LOTS of boys - mostly the big furry kind...).

  • @Timmybear i thin you may be gay timmy

  • @astroboirap - yes, but that doesn't change the fact that one shouldn't have to qualify. I've had crushes on girls (never femmey ones, mind you), and I feel no need to apologize for it.

  • all im saying is that im not a faggot like you. kapish?

  • Beautiful in furs ... they have something from the Velvet Underground and Pavement.

    I love them !

    Naive A Go Go !

  • @xdmcpful yo genius....pavement wasnt around yet...stop spreading the false.

  • beautiful

  • beat happening love c :

  • måst säga att.boff :>

  • hey everybody!!!

like Calvin Johnson and the beat happening?

Check out my channel! I have The Halo Benders (one of Calvins many side projects), husker du, modest mouse, nomeansno and lots of other indie goodness! Goodness for your brainmeats! Please view, subscribe and most of all ENJOY!!!

  • I can't get this song out of my head since I heard it for the first time last week. I can't believe I never really got into these guys before. They are becoming my latest obsession.

  • ah these guys give me hope to create my own music.....

  • @jlp58mjp agree 100% with that

  • heathers a hawt dike

  • this is so amazing !!!

  • Someone had better stop me before I cut my hair like Calvin

  • i have the same problem almost every day.

  • DO IT

  • How long has it been since I heard this song on KCMU....Great post. 5 stars.

  • @ilylac what gives, guys. it actually is really low quality. not just lofi.

  • what's amazing to me about watching this video is seeing all the same Olympia locations that we all walk by nearly every day, except, well, about 25 years earlier? So great!

  • ahh, to be young again

  • hahaha

  • what year is this?

  • Touch blueprints!

  • French toast with molasses,

    Croquet and baked alaskas...

  • that song is just awesoomeee

  • can anyone tell me how they made this vid. it looks amazing:)

  • they had a video camera that they used to record them walking around olympia. then they put all the clips together and played the song over it.

  • thanxxx

yeah, cuz i really like how the vid looks like:)

  • i'm pretty sure this was actually shot on super-8mm not video, you can see the film scratches

  • This is spectacular.

  • For me Calvin Johnson is the coolest, most down person to come from punk or anything loosly associated with it. And compared to any other major figure, he's the only one still as cool now as when he was younger

  • read heavier than heaven. hes kinda a twat. i mean, i dont really know enough about him, but from reading that, he kinda seems like a douche. but i dont know enough.

  • you mean by kurk cobain?? I read that cobain used to like B.H & calvin, he even had a tatoo of K on his arm. Then he went on calvins radio show and stopped liking him because he found him arrogant....that just made me think johnson was even cooler - because for me cobain was the ultimate douche!

  • lol wtf

  • @theMAXILOPEZpsycho Who is this Kurk Cobain you speak of?

  • Kurt Cobain im guessing. From nirvana

  • @Manashoxx haha I know, I was just being sarcastic

  • sorry :( im not that great with sarcasm, even though im english

  • joke?

  • heavier than heaven is biased though.

  • Awesome, awesome, awesome! I love Beat Happening, big influence musically and artistically on me.

  • Most olympia thing I've ever seen.

  • Ditto.

  • they used to party with fugazi,w/out the glue

  • ♥ :)

  • Wow, I never watched this video. The song is amazing, but the video is really good too. Kind of an anti-video, the way the band makes anti-pop music. Wonderful!

  • right on.. its one of those pure songs, . so nice an dso hinest ..

  • calvin johnson is soo cute. so is the drummer. she looks like an english teacher or librarian. another beat happening classic.

  • Boy tasting wild cherry.

  • I love this song - it's defined my weekend. I had never heard it before this weekend, I've now heard it many, many time and I love it.

    Thank you.

  • That's awesome.

  • Beautiful!

  • thanks for posting!!

  • Calvin looks so cute on this video. Beautiful song from Beat Happening. I love this band.

  • reminds me of summers i used to have

  • This is such a classic. Such beautiful imagery and subtle simplicity. Gorgeous.

  • good fuckimn jobv

  • Man, I wish I could go to Olympia. Just walk around all over Washington. Go to Aberdeen,Olympia then Seattle. See if I can get a show played at the Off Ramp.

  • Why can't you? Come on over

  • Broke, no vehicle. No way to get up there. Plus I am NOT going to be homeless in Washington, I'd freeze to death or drown.haha

But, I intend on going there to see if K will let me play at their studio. I called them once, unfortunatly they don't sign bands anymore.

  • haha! i live in washington. in the mornings now, it's 35 degrees F.

    lol

  • I have dreams about the beat happening all the time...

  • This is awesome. Beat Happening walking around Olympia like 100 years ago. I don't recognize the bigger building bret walks in front of at 1:33.

  • I have dreams about this video all the time.
