I heard this song on the XMU channel on satellite radio...It seriously made me want to cancel my subscription. This may be the worst song i have ever heard in my life. It sounds like the singer doesn't actually know how to sing. at all. And now the chorus is stuck in my head. in a bad way. My version of hell would be listening to this song on repeat on an uncomfortable chair with no air conditioning. fuck

I love this song. It makes me long for America, and an American experience that surely began before I had my own adult version. I heard my first cover of this by a Scottish band called Eugenius (AKA "captain america") and loved it ever since. Beat Happening's version? Fuckin' A. I think theirs is a perfect fit for a rough, raw, and honest poem, and it's now my favorite take. Thanks alot for posting.

It sounds like they really utilize their limitations well, I don't know many bands that have bad guitarists, bad singers, and crap, thrift store equipment, but still manage to make fucking awesome songs. Velvet Underground, insanely awesome as they were, they had fucking backing by Andy Warhol, the fact people are calling them VU wannabes, despite the smug douchebag undercurrents that carries, demonstrates they did a pretty good fucking job in my books, considering what little they had.

For some, unknown reason (and a really good one it must have been) both Beat Happening and Swans were really popular in Scotland when I was a teenage (okay, I'm showing my age) in the 80's-early 90's. Thanks for posting. Ex-girlfriends and long forgotten disco dancing awkwardness are filling my thoughts. But this song is so timeless it is still so fresh.
