I have the yellow light of death and im playing mw3 right now...I get the yellow thing and rapid restart it. Yellow, touch, yellow touch, yellow, touch, then it turns on. May be a little confusing.
I'm a online kinda guy to just got my yellow light of death 4 days ago was thinking of sending my
Ps3 in to Sony for $107.00 might I add my ps3 is the old 40 gb system so I'm just say screw that and buy a new ps3 slim 120 gb it's only $245.99 plus I only had my save game data on there not that I care I'm all online baby :) FYI good thing I bought an Xbox 360 slim 2 weeks ago got left for dead 1 & 2 plus halo 3 ! That should kinda keep my mind of my ps3 .
If you don't want a ylod. Just keep your ps3 clean, blow out the vents every week and every now and again you should open that sucker up and clean the dust you can't blow out.
i dont understand why u keep saying that u would lose ur saved data... can't u just remove the hard drive from the fried PS3 and then, if you get a new one, install that hard drive onto the new ps3?
@Evenst3vn Absolutely right. It doesn't even void the warranty. Thumbs up everyone to EvenSt3vn so it can be the top comment and everyone sees it. Another important note: If you upgrade your hard drive(more storage) and send it in to Sony when the PS3 breaks, they will send you a refurbished PS3 with a *new* hard drive, the same size as the default drive for that particular. YOU WILL HAVE TO BUY A NEW HARD DRIVE TO GET THE STORAGE BACK.
Mines being repaired right now. The motherboard is unrepairable but the motherboard will be replaced so it will be just like a new PS3! The only downside of this is that the memory will be wiped.
my ps3 has this but if you turn it on around 15-20times it will turn on and work like a DREAM for as long as you want to play never turns off or freezes WEIRD ??
@TheWilliamFBaby How'd it go? I'm working on mine right now. The only things I've really ruled out are the hard drive and the blu-ray drive. It's dirty as ass, though. Maybe it just needs a good cleaning.
Well, my ps3 ylod'ed on me for the first time, 1 week ago. I was shocked, it's about 3 years old. I did the blowdryer trick and at first it worked for like 5 days.
Today, it ylod'ed for the second time, and it's officially dead. I did the trick again and it only lasted like 30 minutes, and it died again. Now, t doesnt work at all. RIP
my 6 or so year old ylod'd last night for the first time. i heard if you hold a blowdryer back and forth on the back for 15 or so minutes it could fix it? should i try this? i really would love to be able to fix it myself without taking it apart
or you could fix it yourself. just buy a heatgun, artic silver 5, and a flux pen. mine ylod on me after a little over 5 years. fixed it myself with the help from gilksy1's youtube guide
mine lasts bout 5 minutes into play. It will last as long as it is on if it is just sitting there, but about 5 minutes into a game, it will turn yellow then flash red. Is this the standard YLOD issue that can be fixed by putting on new thermal compound? I could do this myself, but dont want to if it wont fix it
HOW IM I going to play black ops or mw2 when my motherboard keeps overheating everytime I fix it. I think that sony is not doing a good job on it. And it is overheating from the motherboard!!! That keeps melting my ps3
my ps3 got ylod a few days ago but it still works. I only get the yellow flashing in the morning but then a few try's in the afternoon it just works like nothing happened lol I'll get it fixed when it breaks all the way
You info is stupid!!! The reason that ylod acours is because the prosessor doesnt have a very good thermal paste of the thermal paste is not well apply!
That I feel is worthy of further study, nothing more. I did not mention ratios for the the same reason that I did not mention probability density or standard deviations. It was not necessary nor did I have enough data to interpret those things. My saying, " 66% of ylods occurred while running in HD" is an initial observation, not a conclusion.
"it's probably going to rain tomorrow" without even looking out the window. What do you base your statement on? Have you done a study? have you read a study to base that on? Did you look out the window to see if there were even any clouds in the sky? I didn't think so. As for my ability to speak English, I speak it very well, so I have no idea what you are even talking about further solidifying my assumption of your intelligence. The statistic that I put forth was and interesting observation
@ unglecrane: What made me think I'm more intelligent than you is that I was posting intelligent and thoughtful comments backed by the facts that i have gathered so far.related to the subject at hand and thinking outside of the box. You posted a meaningless and juvenile comment in a poor attempt to refute what I was postulating without bringing any intelligent facts to the table. Saying that "66% of people probably always use their ps3 in hd" is like saying,
i had mine 2 days ago when i was playing black ops... froze for 2 minute then BAM YLOD FUCK... Called Sony they said to tell them the ps3 number. When i told them they said its from Japan and they told me that they only fix Eu,Au,and Nz. Fuck, now i have to talk in Japanese even though i dont even know any Japanese word -_-;; (P.S they said to go to a 3rd party to fix PS3 but no luck finding people who can fix PS3) :(

@ junglecrane Pull you head out of your ass and read the whole post. I said it myself that the stat held little meaning at this time, but not because 66% of people run in HD, but because I don't yet have enough data to support the theory. Besides it matters little how many people run in HD. What matters (and what I am studying) is the ratios. If the ratio of failures in HD is higher than ratio in std def it will be significant. Your comment adds nothing to the discussion and just shows that you
@jagatuba What makes you think you're more intelligent than me? It would be more convincing if you knew how to speak English. I'm not flaming and it is useful to point out that no matter what sample size you use that stat on its own doesn't show anything. Show me where in your comment(s) you mentioned ratios. Interesting that you only mentioned the ratio after I said that that's what matters. That percentage on its own is irrelevant without context.
@parkourDrew4745619 are you implying that Xbox is better cuz of the ylod? Xbox has the red ring of death and its worse than the ylod. And the ps3 has a lower failure rate than the Xbox anyway. So think about what your gonna post before you do it.
2006-2007-2008-2009-2010-2011 and my ps3 crashes after all of these days unfortunately. did the hairdryer and it worked the first time and second tiime. 3rd time today and it didnt work until i kept pressing the power button.
Instead of using a more higher quality thermal paste. Thus because of that decision being made,Sony used a lower grade paste instead of higher quality thermal compund in the production and manufacture of the PS3's.
I've had mine since the end of 07 and it was working fine when in April of 09 it just died on me. I did some research and came to find out that the power supply died. So I promptly replaced it and started working again. I had no other problems up until April 25 of 2011 when I was playing Bioshock then it happened. Did some more research and came to find out that 90% of YLOD's are due to the CPU and the GPU losing contact to the heat syncing plates. The problem was cheap thermal paste being used
This was very informative for me . but looked up two ways to fix it; I tried the hairdryer trick and it worked, but to be safe I bought a new Ps3 & will be backing up my memory into my new one . I had a game stuck and hadnt backed up my memory, so i was excited when the hairdryer trick worked... GL to all you cats with the YLOD.

haha i got yellow light of death today and afterwords i got a air compressor and blew about a pound of dust out of it. Atleast i know what the problem is but ill prolly just trash the bitch...
or if you want your ps3 2 to get fixed faster when you get YLOD do not turn your ps3 on open a windo put the console by the window wait atleast 1 hr and then as you turn on the console poooof, it works
P.S my cuz got it the day i just typed this down and done exactly what i have typed down now
@neonman1604 i believe you are doomed same thing happend to me i got ylod on my fattie i had no idea what it ment so i tried to restart it and thats where i messed up. i read the instruction booklet and it said DO NOT TRY TO RESTART YOUR PS3 OR YOU WILL FRY YOUR MOTHERBOARD wait 8 hours and it will start fine but mine went out bout 7 months ago and i currently have a ps3 slim with a 4 year protection plan on it you can try to fix your ps3 to get your data back thats what i did good luck.
I got the YLOD 2 weeks ago and there's NO WAY it was from overheating or dust inside the unit. I hardly ever use my system. It's sitting on a shelf with NO obstructions at all. I turned on my system and it made me do a mandatory download. After about 2 min into the download I got the YLOD. The unit was only on for about 3 min when it happened. The inside of my unit is totally dust free. It's a hardware issue that Sony won't admit to.
i had YLOD last summer and it sucks, we fixed it, and it worked for like a month and then it ''died'' again... we bought a new one and now i got my old PSN account back yay
learning how many that have had this problem were running in HD. The figures could be revealing. So far 66% of ylods occurred while running in HD (according to my own study). However, the pool of respondents is far too small for that number to have any true meaning which is why I thought I might be able to pull more respondents from this related video.
I suppose the problem could be similar to the 360's, but regardless, I just found it interesting that my friend's PS3 ran for a very short time (comparatively) while running in HD from the beginning, and mine ran flawlessly for years until I started running it in HD. Could certainly be coincidental, but I haven't found a forum, website, expert, or other qualified source that can provide a definitive explanation to what causes this problem. Which of course is why I'm interested in learni
weeks until I got the ylod. So, ylod? Running in HD? Connection? I'd be interested to see how many people who have gotten the ylod were running their PS3 in HD.
When you run games in HD (720p for all consoles... 1080p is just upscaled 720p) it does put more stress on the GPU due to the increased resolution (1280x720 rather then 640x480) which would most likely increase heat output. If the console got hot enough the solder could possibly get warm enough to crack. IDK much about PS3's but the main cause of the RROD is that the 360's logic board is slightly bent. It could be the same with the PS3.
I have a theory about what causes the ylod. My friend an I both bought a PS3 around the same time (2007, 60GB). He had an HD TV, I did not. After about a year he calls me and tells me his took a sh-- on him. He earned me not to run it all the time. Well, I never listen to anyone and run mine as I always do. Sometimes it would be on for days. Never had a problem. Never. Well got and HD TV for Xmas this year. Hooked up my PS3 to it and loved the beauty of Red Dead Redemption on it for about two w
I got this last week, Sony "said send it to us" I said how much? they replied with "$250 AUD" which is the same as US dollar. replied to this with, theres not fucking way I am paying $250.00 to have a playstation with 3 month warranty and is likely to fail again, I will just buy a XBOX and he said ok so I hung up.
does anybody know if it turning it on and it randomly freezing and shutting off then blinking red but u can start it back up and resume, its like completly random freezing , like i can play it for 2 minutes or maybe even 4 hours but it randomly freezes someitmes and blinks red but no yellow, is this still some version of the yellow light of death?
Mine just got YLOD today. I bought sony so I didn't have to put up with microsofts bs products, only to find that MY PS3 is a bs product THAT COST ME $1500!!!
LOL, I wish. I bought it just after the launch. It was probably more around the $1200(NZD) mark. It doesn't matter though. I rang Sony, and after a talk with one of the Managers about consumer rights, they offered to have it fixed free of charge. Best of all; they said if it breaks-down again they will refund my money(I just need to track down the receipt-ugg) or give me a brand new PS3. OH YEAH!!!
@ajroboberts LOL, I wish. I think it was more like $1200NZD. Anyway, I called the Sony people. I got to speak to a manager(after 2 days). After telling him my rights as a consumer, he offered to have it fixed free of charge.
Best part is if it breaks down again within 3mths, I'm entitled to a full refund, or a brand new PS3. Under NZ Consumer Law, a product must last AT LEAST 5 years. I've had my PS3 for just over 4.
@toeraged Damn, I wish I knew those rights. I just went out and bought a new PS3 so I didn't have to deal with 3rd party repairs or having to ship it to Sony for a month. Good thing it was Christmas about a week ago.
LOL! man I was hooked to this video crackin up at the picture narrations. He he he...VOLVO owners manual, Windows is loading...Great job on the informational video man! Mad props. You are very creative.
@alextheman12345 thats is almost like the ylod. its called the "red blinking light of death" it will stop working! i had the same problem. i called sony and they replaced my 60 gb ps3 for a 120 gb ps3 (refurbished)
1:15 got the YLOD yesterday, but i had no problems today, i had my ps3 on for 20 minutes, and everything was fine, but my ps3 was very very quiet, could this be the problem? that something is broken and so it overheats-->yellow light of death? watch the video in my channel,
please someone say what the audio is at the beginning and end of this video!!!
p.s. baking the ps3 motherboard in an oven at 220C for 10 minutes works well (or CAREFULLY heating with a heat gun or blow torch) works well
p.p.s. heating the motherboard to reflow the solder works for both PS3 YLOD and XBOX360 RROD, have fixed about 100 PS3s and XBOX360s now with these issues

ok fixed it myself with help of youtube vids but now I cant get internet remotely or get the controllers to work unless plugged in.Did I damge the remote antennae somehow?????? Anyone please HELP!!!!
djwhetzel's process works, but mine overheated almost immediately, so I'm checking into a new fan. We were early adopters.....$600 clams for a thing that lasts only 2.5 years. Bad. So I loathe to spend money on this, especially until I exhaust all other options.

I'm planning on letting my YLOD PS3 getting fixed by a 3rd party source/shop.
Do you think this is a good option??
I have a lot of savedata on my YLOD PS3 and I need it!!
The PS3 repair shop is not far away from here, only a few hours from here and the repair costs €100 which is $140.
This is not just a reflow repair, but resolder, reball, clean, more.
So basically my PS3 is getting new connections.
Do you think repairing my PS3 at this shop is worth it??
Or should I just get a new PS3 Slim?

I got the YLOD 2 weeks ago and there's NO WAY it was from overheating or dust inside the unit. I hardly ever use my system. It's sitting on a shelf with NO obstructions at all. I turned on my system and it made me do a mandatory download. After about 2 min into the download I got the YLOD. The unit was only on for about 3 min when it happened. The inside of my unit is totally dust free. It's a hardware issue that Sony won't admit to.

learning how many that have had this problem were running in HD. The figures could be revealing. So far 66% of ylods occurred while running in HD (according to my own study). However, the pool of respondents is far too small for that number to have any true meaning which is why I thought I might be able to pull more respondents from this related video.

@jagatuba I was playing black ops for about 10 minutes online, in HD, when my PS3 decieded to take a shit.

@jagatuba 66% of people probably always use their ps3 in hd, that stat doesn't mean jackshit

@35g70

Connection? I'd be interested to see how many people who have gotten the ylod were running their PS3 in HD.
jagatuba 1 year ago
@jagatuba
35g70 1 year ago
I have a theory about what causes the ylod. My friend an I both bought a PS3 around the same time (2007, 60GB). He had an HD TV, I did not. After about a year he calls me and tells me his took a sh-- on him. He earned me not to run it all the time. Well, I never listen to anyone and run mine as I always do. Sometimes it would be on for days. Never had a problem. Never. Well got and HD TV for Xmas this year. Hooked up my PS3 to it and loved the beauty of Red Dead Redemption on it for about two w

I got this last week, Sony "said send it to us" I said how much? they replied with "$250 AUD" which is the same as US dollar. replied to this with, theres not fucking way I am paying $250.00 to have a playstation with 3 month warranty and is likely to fail again, I will just buy a XBOX and he said ok so I hung up.

does anybody know if it turning it on and it randomly freezing and shutting off then blinking red but u can start it back up and resume, its like completly random freezing , like i can play it for 2 minutes or maybe even 4 hours but it randomly freezes someitmes and blinks red but no yellow, is this still some version of the yellow light of death?

toeraged 1 year ago
@toeraged $1500? What did you do buy a PS3 made of diamonds?
ajroboberts 1 year ago
@ajroboberts
OH YEAH!!!
toeraged 1 year ago
@toeraged WTF? That comment wasn't there before. I typed it, but it never showed up.
Meh..............
toeraged 1 year ago
@ajroboberts LOL, I wish. I think it was more like $1200NZD. Anyway, I called the Sony people. I got to speak to a manager(after 2 days). After telling him my rights as a consumer, he offered to have it fixed free of charge.
Best part is if it breaks down again within 3mths, I'm entitled to a full refund, or a brand new PS3. Under NZ Consumer Law, a product must last AT LEAST 5 years. I've had my PS3 for just over 4.
toeraged 1 year ago
@toeraged Damn, I wish I knew those rights. I just went out and bought a new PS3 so I didn't have to deal with 3rd party repairs or having to ship it to Sony for a month. Good thing it was Christmas about a week ago.

please someone say what the audio is at the beginning and end of this video!!!
p.s. baking the ps3 motherboard in an oven at 220C for 10 minutes works well (or CAREFULLY heating with a heat gun or blow torch) works well
p.p.s. heating the motherboard to reflow the solder works for both PS3 YLOD and XBOX360 RROD, have fixed about 100 PS3s and XBOX360s now with these issues
