My favorite Space Marine chapter is the Dark Angels, and one of the reasons is they did in fact wait to see who won during the Horus Heresy. That and the "Fallen" are actually the first of the Dark Angels, ie the ones made by the Emperor himself. Which made them loyal to the Emperor not to the Lion. They rebelled against the other Dark Angels because El'Johnson wouldn't let them go to there beloved Emperor's aid.

@dukemorran1 Yes, they "did stay out of combat on purpose" and manipulate the other Legions, the same way the Emperor "deliberately intended" for his Primarchs to be scattered across the stars by the Chaos Gods. You're just witnessing the backlash to Matt Ward's butchering of the Space Marines Codex. The UMs were a competent, if somewhat unremarkable, Legion, and they remain to this day a competent, if somewhat unremarkable, Chapter (Ward-Lore notwithstanding).

Hehe aye The Dark angels were the first Space marine legion.

The Ultra marines are the biggest chapter in terms of territory and resources. Most chapters only have a single or a handful of worlds to draw recruits and recources from, the ultras have Ultramar, a small empire within the empire, its why they always have alot of fresh recruits.

People tend to confuse them for the first chapter because they get shown a lot on cover art and so forth.

All chapters are nearly equal in power, however all first founding chapters(Ultramarines, Space Wolves Dark Angels etc) have the best repuatation along with two later founding chapters, the Black Templars and Blood Ravens. The Grey Knights are also very powerful, but not in a way like other chapters(specialized for daemon and chaos marine hunting).
