  • The army corps of engineers is proposing the issuance of a general permit for gravel mining on the chetco river in oregon in order to essentially make it easier for a contractor to obtain a permit to conduct in stream gravel mining on the river. the chetco is a premier salmon fishery. how do you think the army corps issuing general permits will effect the river quality?

  • When gravel is removed, the stream will rearrange itself to fill up the depression. During high water, it will move bedload from upstream, eroding the stream bottom or collapsing the banks. A "nationwide" permit merely lets folks file and start mining without any individual review. It bypasses the opportunity to review specific conditions at the site.
