Priorities, to me priorities are about keeping yourself fed, clothed and sheltered, owning a boat is not a priority, it is a luxury, so to say you haven't got any luxuries is rubbish...

Just out of curiosity, do you pay council tax? If not, then you don't have the right to use public services, a lot of boaters who think that they don't need to pay because they live on the water use such services, but we landlubbers have to pay more for these people, so it swings both ways... ;)

Well, the former owner of the boat had no house, the boat was his home, he had no choice but to live on it, if you lost your boat, you still have a home to go to, if you're not a liveaboard, then boat ownership is a luxury, as is owning a car and a house, so to complain about having no money to pay for other people using something you don't need, think about those who aren't as well-off, who have little or no choice, a lot of boats are people's homes, not leisure craft like some...

And let's say you lost your job, you can't find work, thus can't afford to run everything, so you sell your house, you move onto the boat, you still can't find work, then you end up unable to pay for the licence on the boat, then you're in the same category as a lot of people in poverty, think what it is to be like in that situation, imagine yourself in their shoes, then imagine your only home with your remaining belongings being taken away from you, it's not charity, it's life...

  • From this side of the "pond", it appears that UK folk are taxed to the hilt, and what's left is to be doled out in various "fees". I'll bet there's even a "breathing tax" over there. And what do you get when you hand over your hard earned money to "them" ? Absolutely nothing. Much different in the South of France, according to the numerous ex-pats I've talked to there....

  • ow i saw this on another video , it was on there as an abandoned boat , i wondered why . all is clear now

  • everybodys 100% sure ,the owners just ignored warnings+freeloaded ,,,,,they couldnt be in hospital?had a severe stroke?paralysed ,or even dead?mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm narrow mimded?,theres a pun there ,,,

  • These folk would hate my bass boat

  • These folk would hate my bass boat

  • Serves them just right - its justice for the rest of us. I struggle to pay my licence and mooring fees but its my contribution to the overall upkeep of the system. Without it there is no waterway system. I am sick of freeloading selfish scum who sponge off the rest of us hardworking honest folk. BW would have given them ample warning and multiple chances to pay their fees. WELL DONE BW !

  • @elrobbo31

But if you think about it logically, BW leave a lot of boats to be trashed and vandalised, so when they come to auction them off, then they lose a lot of money, not to mention when they have to remove the fibreglass boats, it costs them more to remove and break up than it does to sell them to someone who would want to buy them up.

So, BW fail miserably in their debt recovery system, it's no wonder they've been removed as a government body...

  • Fuckin well sweet m8

  • @sharksandwich100

    gutted bout teh weetbix aswel

  • narrowboat people love cast iron stoves - FACT!

  • @speckog

Well that's just stating the obvious... :P

  • yeh im not to bothered that i wont be able to go far hehe with it should be able to go some distance on the grand union or river lee or the Thames as im in north london but im sure im gona have great fun with it :))

  • hopefully it will be quite big 70 x 13ft canal boat if all goes to plan should know tmrw touch wood :)

  • Ah, a widebeam, they're not as common as narrowboats, and not as easy to pinch, so you should be ok, and good luck with getting it build, living on the canals is my dream, but on a 6'6" by 57' narrowboat, the most universal size (except for one lock in norfolk which is 40ft in length)... :)

  • oh thats not good news :( i was thinking getting one of these built ,but id put some sort of tracking device in it somewhere like they have on expensive cars ans some massive chains

  • So long as you have something really unique to the design (like portholes at a set distance, or a unique roof style), if it was stolen, it would be easy to track down even if it was repainted... :)

Also keep plans and pictures in a safe place off the boat (family or friends house in a safe), that way you can give the coppers plenty of info on it's design to locate it... :)

  • it looked pretty accessible to me, if it was me ,i would of don clandestine towing at night and just moved it to different parts of the canal ,and different canals but im pretty new to this so stuff

  • Yeah, it was pretty accessible, anyone could have taken it away if they had something to cut the chain that was padlocked to it, it had been broken into, vandalised, even the mooring ropes cut, but nobody seemed brave enough to cut the chain and take it, not that I would advocate such things of course... :)

A common theft of narrowboats is to take them (either towing or breaking the ignition lock), paint them primer grey and re-license them with a new number, it's deceitful, but common sadly...

  • why didnt the owner just tow it away ???

  • Presumably because British Waterways towed it away from Salterforth (where I was told he resided on the boat) and was moved to Barrowford Locks without his knowledge, and as BW had applied a "Section 8" on it, it technically would have been theft without consent if he tried to take it back... :\

Though to be honest, taking away someone's home is pretty much a barbaric practice for such a low value waterways license... :\

  • hi great video, thanks was wondering where did you take it and where do BW auction these boats? i have lived on the canal and as for BW caring for the waterways or the people that live on them what a joke! cheers

  • More of this is required. there are many boats not paying the true licence, no licenced or overstaying on moorings without paying. You get a ticket on your car and can get towed away in a lot less time than a section 8 notice gives you. After 45 years on the waterways I can tell you proper paying boaters are pissed off with these types. Many of te boats are in such a bad state that they cannot get a BSS or insurance, hence BW takes appropiate action.

  • @panzercatIf your car gets towed away,it's not the end of the world. If your boat gets towed away, you lose your HOME.Surely there must be a better way to deal with the problem if people are in genuine financial trouble, especially in this day and age.How do you know that some of these people haven't been loyal with their BW fees for years, and then lost their income?Supposing the shoe was on the other foot, what would YOU do if you couldn't pay your fees through no fault of your own?Lose your boat?

  • Not really my thing but another example of how shit our country is becoming when they can say " you owe me some money so I'm taking your expensive boat and there jack shit you can do about it ", someone has to make a stand against these so called laws

  • Just as bad as Manchester city council making people bankrupt for being a few hundred pounds behind on their council tax... :\

  • no pay no stay, you wouldnt expect to run your car around without paying road tax, no matter how strapped for cash you are. BW do a great job looking after one of our countries mos beautiful assets

  • Is that said as a boater or a bystander? ;)

BW only do work that gains them money, or is absolutely necessary, they sell off canal heritage buildings, they charge more and more for licences and do less and less to look after the canals, instead they pocket as much money as they can for their directors and their bonuses. So, BW is no longer the organisation they once were and the canals are heading for disuse once again thanks to their lack of attention...

  • its just a boat grow up

  • It's just a boat that cost someone tens of thousands of pounds which BW have pissed away due to their negligence...

  • what is a BW sale?

  • It is an auction sale held by British Waterways to sell off the more profitable boats, as far as I know, the money they get is split between themselves, to cover the costs of impounding and unpaid licence fees an the remaining amount goes back tot he original owner, the rest of the boats get chopped up for scrap, which is a shame as a lot of them can be refurbished and sold on... :(

  • that a bito a bugger, bit like the old vardoos in that sence i guess, they tend t get left un-seen t n just rot which is shame in same sence, at mo i restore or build em from scratch in spare time, lookin tmove on t barges when can afford it, tis all extra cash the tax man cant get u on earning n is nice t do

  • It is a real shame, I went up about a month back and it's still there, and the stained glass window I zoomed in on is gone, one of the windows over the bed has been smashed, and looking inside it has been trashed and gutted, such a sad sight to see when it could have been someone's pride and joy if BW let someone with the time and money take it on... :(

  • How dare the british waterways simply take property from someone, the fees should be civil matter and nothing to do with the boat... typical of this agressive gov we have, fcuking nazis they are...

  • There can be many reasons why boats are left to deteriorate, and we do need to mindful of this, but it is such a shame to see them in this condition.

  • It is, that boat, I don't know what the name of it is, but whoever "A & G/C Scott" of Darwen are should be ashamed of themselves, that boat is a very nice boat, left to go to rack & ruin, ok the so-called credit crunch may have caused problems, but they could have sold it if they were in financial troubles, but I don't know why it was impounded, all I know is it's there, and it's being left to go to waste, which I don't like, and me being me, I'd have it in a shot if I could afford to run it!!!

  • Obviously, you are a complete knob.

Having been around boats since I was a kid, i've seen them in this condition many times. Unfortunately, the usual reason is because of illness or bereavement. You need to think about that before you start gobbing off saying people should be "ashamed of themselves" because they haven't looked after THEIR boat to YOUR liking. The only person that should ashamed is you - for your lack of consideration & your jealousy.

  • Normally I wouldn't grace a childish comment such as this with a response, but, I have been told by a friend of the former owner of the boat that he had been in financial difficulty for a long while with the costs of running the boat up until the point where British Waterways had impounded their boat, and as I say, they could have sold the boat to cover costs. As for saying it was to my liking, it was not, I hate to see a narrowboat in such a state, I only hope it gets a new owner at a BW sale.
