This plasma vaporises any water meaning that a sea impact is really a dry land impact. The energy released from the impact is nuclear level though it's due to the sheer momentum of millions of tons of rock coming to a rapid stop, since momentum is preserved.

I doubt that New York would have been THAT drenched, it definitely hit a tiny land mass, none of which can be found in the Atlantic, so it may not have affected the city anyway. Unless a wave passed over Japan, China, Russia, Eastern Europe, Germany, France, U.K, Ireland, Iceland (before you say it, no it didn't hit Iceland), and then New York. The moon would probable do it but everything less would cause an all killing firestorm or everything freezing ice age....well, i think anyway.
