Thanks! The guy I got it from said it hadn't been run in a year or two; except for a slightly stuck valve that made it to shoot flames, it fired right off the first time I tried it after I learned how to crank it. Right! No compression release! It takes a little persistance to get it over the top, and it better start quick or you will have to stop and rest!Notice at the :37 I set the throttle to run. I found almost no info on the internet about this engine. I don't know what the bore/stroke is.
Thanks for the info...looks like it would be good for a generator system as a backup or part of an off-grid system; I've seen a couple of videos on here, featuring a "Listeroid" diesel running on WVO for an off-grid house (plus solar).
I didn't know that Atlas-Imperial made a one-cylinder; there's a site, oldtacomamarine-dot-com (I think he has a number of tugboat videos on this site) where he may know about this engine...your model number looks as if it fits the Atlas numbering system.
Yea, I think it is a little smaller than the 6hp (5kW) listeroids that are available now. It would probably run a 3kW gen head easily, but it would have close to a 1:1 pulley ratio so the gen head would only run at 1200 instead of 1800 rpm. I looked on the Tacoma Marine site, and it looks like Atlas made a ton more multi cyl. large diesel engines than the single cyl like in this vid. I will send him a note and see what happens...Thanks! G
You could have a machine shop bore and tap a hole in the head for a T-handle compression release similar to those used on Mordiesel engines.

Nice sounding/running engine! No compression release? Must take a lot of OOMPH! to crank it over! What's the bore X stroke?
