  • omg cool :o i wanna go to london for new years eve

  • Why did the Westminster Chimes rings at 22 seconds on the countdown?

  • @Lakilester00 Are we talking of Big Ben here?

  • @Lakilester00 because the chimes count down to the hour, Big Ben marks the hour.

  • @Lakilester00 The bell that countes the hours strikes when the countdown is finished. What you hear 22 seconds before the countdown had finished is the famous melody you know from big ben ;D

  • @Lakilester00 The Westminster chimes do not denote the hour. They rang 22 seconds early due to the fact that the first chime of Big Ben is the actual start of the hour.

  • @Lakilester00 It's the first strike of the main bell ("Big Ben") that marks the exact start of the hour.

  • love the music!

  • The chime at new year is the only thing I like in the celebration here :P

*Epic silence* DUN... DUN.... DUN... DUN

  • oh ur welcome! i mean i live in the US and i want to go to see Big Ben on New Years and wow im just amazed that u taped it! u did a fantastic job!

  • I am sure that Big Ben & the fireworks did all the work. I merely pointed the video camera.

  • oh yeah im pretty sure Big Ben did all of the work there..... does it get really crazy on new years over there in London??

  • Restrained excitement. People do go round wishing everyone Happy New Year and some people climb trees. But generally by very late at night it being cold and dark - people are keen to go home after the midnight hour. Of course - some groups are a little excited.

  • magnificent!

  • Thank you!

  • Why are we watching this? LOL.

  • Perfect timing!! Go ahead, big ben :)

  • made me weep..

  • It IS astonishing in it's effect isn't it.

  • yes indeed..

  • wow!

  • woo!

  • We were there on the eve of 2000 and there were about 2million folk there then. But even in 2008 there were huge numbers of very peaceful people there and it was great fun.

  • I have been to London twice and heard the GREAT clock chime from Parliment Square...what a beautiful clock tower. Would love to be there on New Years Eve to experience it some day!

  • totally freaking awesome.

  • it was like that being there.

  • But it is almost 2 years ago. Time goes by so quickly! jackB21

  • AHH the first gongs of 2008.Such a sweet sound...

  • That is very kind of you. Thanks. JackB21

  • (with British accent) Oh, Happy New Year, darling.

  • thanks. ya make loads of ordinary vids and then one that is good.

  • that is cool

  • It was very enjoyable too!

  • Thanks so much for making the trip across the pond to make this vid! Loved it too!

  • That was cool :D

  • Make sure you bring your overcoat.

  • really nice, I whant to be in a new year one day in england such a beautiful country!!

  • Le debemos funes el memorioso de Borges a el big ben, porque se inspiró escuchándolo.

  • Awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • watch?v=slt9PQHEllk

  • ahmm what you mean with this?

  • WoW i wish i were there!

  • I didnt, sounds a bit of a socialist view to me. I am sure that David Cameron might do something about this if he gets into power.

  • You know the clock tower leans 8.66 inches to the left?

  • I have been in London the past week and I made my Dad take me upto Big Ben at lunchtime so I could hear the bongs!

I dont know why, but I love the sound... Its very British :P

Thankyou for putting this on here :)

    xxxx

  • Thanks

  • wooo!

  • it might be worth it just for that feeling!

  • that is so amazing it gives me chills im gonna move there its worth it

  • Wow... it feels almost magical somehow :) want to see that in new year at least once in my life

  • BIG BEN the bell is 150 years old today - 11th July 2009. It is really exciting and fun - as long as it isnt raining. But even so the crowds around are great, so are the fireworks and the bells just add to it.

  • I can't help thinking you are wrong. Big Ben is the name of the bell and it is massive - hence the big sound.

  • I was here for this. It was great, but I think big Ben is played over loud speakers. Does anyone know what the song is?

  • I love how Big Ben is so ridiculously loud it drowns out the fireworks

  • if it is as much fun as there was on that night it would not be too bad.

    best wishes

    jackb21

  • the last day of earth

  • yes as yhou say - amazing!

  • amazing absolutely amazing

  • didnt we all

  • I felt a little chill when the clock struck twelve...

  • Wonder why i did not see u there lol

  • cos i am taking the film trang

  • we were opposite the wheel - on the parliament side of the river. the fireworks looked great - and it was not difficult to walk to the nearest tube - which run until about 4am.

the nearest stations however, will not be open. so dont expect to walk to embankment station - instead you have to walk to trafalgar square but if the weather is good then the crowds are pleasant.

  • Question:

Where were you at actually? Is this the Embankment side of the Thames?? I'm from Holland and I'm going to celebrate New Year in London this year and I was wondering what the best place would be to see these fireworks.

Any suggestions? Also as to what to do/where to go after the fireworks?

Do the busses/tube go all night? (Might be handy to get to my hostel in time :)

  • Halloween is not something that I celebrate. The following couple of days is All Saints Days - and that day I celebrated at church.

Back to alcohol - it is possible to buy non-alcoholic wines and champagnes I think.

  • So how was your Halloween?

  • Okay, Thanks! Oh yeah, so some don't have alcohol

  • Does champaine have alcohol in it?

  • if you buy alcoholic champagne yes.

  • What's in the cup, Wine?

  • might have even been champagne!

  • me too. amazing night.

    jack from france

  • wow that gave me chills

  • ya - the years go by quite slowly when you are 22 but seem to dash by quicker once you pass 40.

    happy new year

    jack

  • cool

another year in by big ben

  • awesome!!! without big ben, who would enjoy the new year at the strike of midnight???!!!!!!!!

  • The countdown time was projected onto one of the buildings next to the London Eye. So the whole crowd was able to countdown together.

  • OOOOOO

soo that's how you guys celebrate it-

the numbers are projected into a building.

    That's cool I guess.

I personally think the ball drop is cooler in a way.

  • We also have the Westminster chimes and Big Ben. Always exciting!

  • really-

    what's that?

  • Well, the Westminster chimes are the 16 notes played before the hour (1:19) and Big Ben, of course, is the hour bell.

  • OOOO that's cool.

  • If anyone was wondering, the words to the westminster chimes you can hear before Big Ben strikes are:

"All through this hour - Lord, be my guide - And by Thy power - No foot shall slide."

  • Love that, This is way better than NYC Times square and the dumb ball!!!

  • thanks! happy new year

  • Wots the music called at the start...i like it

  • I think you would have to ask the then mayor Ken Livingstone. It was broadcast over the airwaves that night.

  • so hands up the people who don't know Boris Johnson is the mayor...come on don't be shy

  • thanks jameseley - hands up those who didnt realise that this film was taken at the end of 2007 and beginning of 2008 when Boris Johnson was just a twinkle in The Daily Mail's eye.

  • So hands up the people who don't fucking care?

  • *puts hand up and smiles*

  • I'm sorry to say, but I have to agree.

  • The best one i have seen so far -- i love the bell in the back.

    thanks for the video

  • HAPPY NEW YEAR PEEPS!

  • Ya yu tu

  • Even though there is only ten bongs it is a really smashing video! Thankyou from an English Girl in Germany!

  • thanks but you know that now we have decimal time there are only 10 bongs to the chime. It was a European directive which Germany agreed to.

    Best wishes
