As a child I danced in Zeffirelli's production of "Pagi" at the Met as the street urchin Nedda sings to in the1st act from 1968-72. I was onstage with Stratas,Tucker, Milnes during this scene. This recording flooded me with memories. I had to remain onstage in a tent til the end of the 1st act & every night witnessed Tucker singing Vesti la giubba. At 10 yrs old, he brought me to tears. If anyone has any photos of any "Pag" performances from the Met during those years, I would be very grateful.
I remember seeing you countless times, and also backstage when I went to meet Richard Tucker in his dressing room. I have pictures Please write to me! He was incredible, and the greatest tenor I ever saw.
Saluti.
He could be a little "over the top" in such roles but here is does well dramatically. What a voice! I heard him in concert & he was vocally pretty much perfect. Met him afterwards & when he found I was a tenor, was most gracious. He was the fine man all said he was.
Jmccracken-- this was 1971 because I was at the 1973 performance and it was not Brdcst, June with Corelli in Cav. in poor voice with a cold. This was brdcst. and i have it on reel tape somewhere his 1970 also was brdcst the year before. Milton Cross announced after this 1971 Brdcst. that Richard and Sara where celebrating their 35 wedding anniversary!
Too say Corelli or Del Monaco where where the greatest in history of course is just an opinion and some may say that Martinelli or even Domingo or Jussi may be but IMO Tucker was the greatest in the role and the greatest tenor of his type- a Spinto. Del Monaco in the role was next, again just IMO. Nobody can tell me anything different. I really don't care.
Tucker was better singer as a musician then corelli or del monaco, corelli was best in roles like calaf and in aida not anything lyric or for that matter his canio was not as good as MDM or tucker.
I will check my two brdcsts of it he did. One of them the first was in 1970 the next in 1971 the year later, also in in 71 was an Italian one in Florance on Gala CD but I don't think it was this one. The Nedda was Stratas in 1970 and perhaps 71 also. I doubt This was 1973 which was not brdcst on radio but it was as emotional as this easily and I was at the performance.
This is either 1971 or 1973, because that is unquestionably Cornell MacNeil snarling Tonio's "Taci, sciocco!" and he was NOT in the 1970 broadcast (Frank Guarrera sang Tonio then). I would lean towards 1971, because of the clarity of the sound (HAS to be a radio broadcast), and because the orchestra plays like seasoned pros for the conductor, who was Fausto Cleva in 1971. Cleva, of course, had conducted this opera MANY times at the Met. (Cillario conducted the 3 Cav-Pag's in June 1973.)
I heard Tucker live in virtually all of his major roles. He was always good;you always got a performance from him.The "super-stars" came and went,Tucker remained. Live the voice had much more dimension, color, and roundness - but the recordings are still amazing. Most of all, he was a true professional: he never sang things that were wrong for him, he almost never cancelled, and he understood the responsibilities and seriousness of what he did. There is noone like him in the world today.
My late voice teacher often sang Turiddu during these double-bill performances and said Tucker was an absolute force of nature. Many members of the Cav cast would often watch from the wings.
A live video of one of his last Canio's (1974) about this time exists, taped only weeks before he died but the Met has not let it out. I had the pleasure of seeing a private showing of it about 32 years ago with Di Stefano and Sara Tucker who was sitting next to me and Di Stefano was moved too tears in his eyes when I looked at him at the end of it, sung the same way as here, it was awesome on stage with I believe Azumi as Nedda on that last one. Saw him do it at the met in 6/73 was terrific
Thank you for this and I was at several of these Canio's he did in the 70's not long before he died, here he is in his late 50's and as you hear he sang up on the final words the "comedy is finished" This he told me was what Franco Zeferelli wanted and Franco said "no other tenor will do for me in this role" "I want Tucker" he recorded the entire role in 1951 on columbia and with Amara, it is now on a CD off label never re-issued he never sang it live till 1969 in the house, GREAT CANIO!
Yes, I heard about a dozen times in the house and it was very exciting live he did not seem to accent as you say bark as it sounds on the tapes when you heard him live and earlier in the 50's and 60's he sang with a more lyric sound but the power was tremendous always, no spinto ever was better for me anyhow, the voice would hit the back wall and come back at you on those B's .
Defiantly. One would probably appreciate a live video of his more than a live recording. My parents were regulars at the Met years ago and still swear Tucker was the best singer of any they ever saw there.

Oh, Tucker was really weak....
Mediocre all the way.

Tucker here is really great but both Corelli and del Monaco were the greatest Canios in history.
Both posseded much more beautiful colour of voice and voice possibilities.

Voice possibilities????

As you write, Tucker was the greatest tenor of all time, and I was fortunate to see him hundreds of times, and to know him very well.

No doubt the best tenor of all time, but I sometimes find that in his live recordings he almost barks the words out. He didn't do that in the studio.

No doubt he was exciting to listen to on stage though. I wish I was born in that generation.

It is no wonder that Mario Del Monaco was a sincere admirer of this man's voice. Tremendous performance!
