@seancoxen I don't know who's using my account to write all this. I did NOT comment on this video nor do this comment reflect my own views. I must get to the bottom of this.
That's Nikolaus Lehnhoff sitting on the right of Wagner @ 3:44 . Lehnhoff directed the Ring in San Francisco and Münich in the 80's. I wonder who the young man sitting to the right of Lehnhoff is..?
Thank you so much for posting this spine-tingling clip of the true "greats" in rehearsal. This is how it should be done - Directors of today, please note!
Wieland Wagner had a great sense of humour, as we know. And used to explain complicated themes through irreverent comparisons, keeping all his singers in a good mood (It is mentioned many times in many memoirs). Here he repeats the name of Kaiser Franz Joseph: Ich meine nicht Kaiser Franz Joseph!---Evidently, in this case, he doesn' t want ponderousness and pomposity, or smth like this..

@iskenderuna Lehnhoff's SF RING was totally useless with poor direction, terrible acting...... It never should have happened.

Can anyone tell me -- what is the joke that Wieland Wagner makes toward Gerd Nienstedt that gets everybody laughing so much?
