I saw the first 16 seconds of the video and I noticed that the practicer is hitting a flat stone with his hands, I'm not a practicer, but isn't that bad for you're bones, I mean its very amazing to see that, how they train to grow stronger, but at long time, is not bad???
@toguro35 your bones get tiny cracks that then heal over and become stronger. over time your bones can actually become harder than the stone. But this must be done at different lvls untill you get to this point. if you start where he is, you'll break your hand
i highly respect goju-ryu its one of the most powerful styles of karate i have ever seen its conservation of tradition is impecible however i am more of a kyokushin karate man. but i love to watch goju-ryu in action its just as practical as kyokushin
I remembered i first learned about Higoana sensei while watching History Channel's human weapon. Higoana sensei was feaured during the episode about Karate. I think he was almost 70 years old when they interviewed him , he still teaches Karate & continued live in an active lifestyle and strong human being.
Too bad you are so upset:) The foremost thing in Oriental Martial Arts, esp. Chinese, is LiYi(礼仪) or Ri, which happens to be "Manners". Its the first thing you learn in a dojo or school, LiYi also comes with humility. What ever you claim to be learning, from your Sifu you have not learnt humility or manners. Another shallow swaggering internet tough guy I guess:)
@Pecherin72 great comment. I didn't know that about the Chinese Martial Arts. I am a Jujitsu student myself, and we heavily stress the japanese Bushido code of the Samurai in our dojo which sounds a lot like the " LiYi(礼仪) or Ri" or manners that you mention. Bushido is the way a warrior should conduct himself, (not just the seven words you hear about alot), so loosely translated it can mean "warrior etiquette/manners"
Haha, yes I'm ignorant of Chinese or Japanese Martial Art traditions but you're the expert-and my grandfather wasn't a Chinese Martial Artist. But there's absolutely no need for you to get upset just because I said you're stupid. You need to learn self-assurance and Manners. Enough Said. Bye!
You said give him 10 years, its been 30 years since this video and last I met him in July 07 his hands were perfectly fine. Like I said people just can't do it without special knowledge, including DitDaJow etc, or they'll hurt their hands. And that includes Japanese Masters who didn't bother to take special care when doing this training. Lots of people think they can just punch the Makiwara and toughen the fists like that-as a result they messed up their hands in their old age.
"Its a known fact that japanese conditioning will mess up your hands in the long run...." Well, firstly Sensei Higaonna is Okinawan, and no offense, but if you don't think there's a difference between an Okinawan karate master like Sensei Higaonna and the run-of-the-mill Japanese karate master you need to know so much. Okinawa karate does not equal Japanese Karate, so chill-out, Okay?
That's a stupid comment. Morio Sensei is perfectly fine at 70 and still doing it. Its those who don't know how to do it who will injure themselves and mess up their hands. You can't just read a book, watch a video and start hitting something hard. It needs to be taught how to toughen the fists without long term injury!
Wow, this guy is incredible. Proof of what discipline and dedication can bring you. And still very humble, the way a martial artist should be.

@toguro35 Their bones may brake from that, but the bones will heal and become stronger then they once were.

makiwara

It is called a makiwara board. You can get them to mount on your wall, or you can have the post.
But what I do is just simply strike trees.

Check out the 70-year-old Morio on - Sensei Higaonna Human Weapon - his hands are just fine and still taking a beating.
I remember this when it was 1st aired on BBC2, he and Simon Lau must have inspired thousands of guys like us to start training. Good post!
