Sadly, the Del Toro production will star Samual Jackson, and they will be able to defeat the Shuggoths by using technology discovered in the ruins, which the nerdy genius kid, played by Shia LaBoef, figures out, only to die.
I know this is fake but it REALLY made me want to see the film. If ever they do make a film of it they should definitely use newsreel footage. It makes the whole thing seem real.
So that's how you say Khlûl'-hloo... good to know. It does have all that aquatic ressonance, kathooloo doesn't...
Has to be written somewhere, about the unspeakable cries of toddler Lovecraft when mummy stayed there chanting church-songs until young Howie would finish to eat his sardines.
@JackRussellTerrier2 No, that would be The Call Of Cthulhu. At least until Del Toro actually gets around to making ATMOM. This is a great teaser though. Well done, sir! Makes me wish you were actually attempting to make the whole thing.
James Cameron is 'helping' Guillermo del Toro ... but the movie must be made in 3D. Please don't let this be another Avatar; solely relying on the 3D gimmick! At least Guillermo del Toro has hired S.T. Joshi! You cannot go wrong with S.T. Joshi and Guillermo del Toro. If anything can be said about Del Toro it is that he has the respect, dedication and love for Lovecraft to make a serious and big-budgeted Lovecraft movie. Look at his Hellboy films, you can just see his love towards the franchise.
Actually, Guillermo tel Toro (Pans labyrinth) is directing ATMOM "the movie", dont know much about it, it says its "in development".. I have high expectations, if it ever comes out..
If Someone were to do ATMOM--they would have to dedicate at least 5 years to get it perfect---the last scene of the movie has to be Danforth shrieking Tekelili! Tekelilli!
Very nice job- Wish I had a GM who'd go to that much trouble! (For the purposes of a faux trailer, I wish you could have found a little snippet of some fossil crinoids being uncovered-- But that's a minor nitpick!)
The idea of using video as elements to a COC game is ingeneus, and one that I may look into myself! This is very good work, you capture the feel perfectly and I love the footage you chose.
Great stuff! You'll have to let us know how it went with your game. The response and whether it worked seemlessly in etc...
The problem with making At The Mountains of Madness is that it might be quite a long film. Plus the beauty of Lovecraft is that most of the horror is in your own mind, not on the page. I don't it would survive most attempts to make it onto the screen.
no he ain't. He's doing the Hobbit. Then something else, then possibly another thing before. Also, the Hobbit is being split into two movies.
Last I heard he's not going to start untill 2011 or some such shit. Which is a shame because if anyone can do it, he can.
Meanwhile, Gordon and Combs just finished a new Dunwich Horror, Leigh Scott is ripping it off, and the Whisperer movie is at least in principal photography by now.
YOU SERIOUS??! Cool and not cool at the same time... I hope it won't be a Hollywood blockbuster, 'cause the worst thing that could happen is making HPL works commercial and popular among average morons. Lovecraft hated money and wrote for himself, exactly the opposite of Hollywood's scriptwriters and other corporate hypocrites.
This is the closest I have seen to a belivable movie adaptation I have seen. And its not because the other stuff is bad, its because this was really really good. I would rather you made a upcoming lovecraftmovie than 99 % of the people in hoolywood. You managed to get the feeling right. Impressive!
This was VERY cool, though if I had one suggestion would be to change or excise the music entirely. The music feels too "hollywood" in this for me. Great stuff anyways!
But it could also be said the Carpenters version is sort of a Prequel to the Lovecraft tale.... in that he talks more about the expedition that gets destroyed (although modernizing it, of course) rather than concentrating on what was found afterwords. Like Shakespeare, Lovecraft didn't often talk about actual events or action, but more about the results and discovery of the remains of those events. In Call of Cthulu he doesn't tell the story of the norweigen lost at sea, but tells of....
Metallica wasn't mainstream when they wrote that song. i think it's on justice for all.... along with, Call of Ctulu... either bad spelling or intentional dodge of copyright infringement
Filmaking techniques look way too outdated. Lines going though the picture may have been okay in the thirties, but guess what? It ain't the 1930s anymore. There's no logical reason to use stale, antiquated techniques when far superior ones are easily available.
I hope he at least changes the end to have a happier ending. Lovecraft's work was way too nihilistic and bleak. It needs more positive uplifting stuff in it.
I totaly disagree with your last comment. H.P Lovecraft is known for his arts within the horror genre...any form of "uplifting" stuff in the book would ruin its reputation and quality as horror.
Shut your unbelieving mouth, you pale and squamous man-thing! When the ancient ones return from beyond the stars you shall surely be devoured last, forced to witness the true madness of their horror! IA IA IA!
I hope you are kidding! Lovecraft is 30th horror so this trailer is perfectly fitting. And of cours Lovecraft is depressing and nihilistic, thats what makes him so special. If you want something uplifting, go watch the care bears!;-)
You don't add salt to sugar, and you don't try to make Lovecraft positive and uplifting. The whole *point* of Lovecraft is to illustrate man's complete helplessness in the face of greater powers. You're supposed to use it to reflect on your own significance on a larger scale. There are plenty of stories that are positive and uplifting, go watch those movies and leave Lovecraft alone.
You're an idiot, reverend syn.... the whole point of lovecraft was to be dark and to be scary. ALL HORROR is intended to be scary. To conclude a lovecraft tale with a happy ending would be blasphemous...
Personally, I dont eagerly expect adaptations of lovecrafts work because I think Its pretty dificult to do it right. Lets hope that if del Toro or anyone else films it, it rescues the escence of the novel
Man, this is great. It just captures the feel of the novel.
For years Guillermo Del Toro has the rights for making a movie out of it, but it seems that 'Hellboy' is a much more profitable endeavour.
Yeah, sure John Carpenter did "The Thing", based on a 1958 movie, and, well, it's great, but we really need more H.P. Lovecraft adaptations.
"The Ressurrected", by Dan O'Bannon, anybody? It's a movie around 'The Case Of Charles Dexter Ward'. Pretty mediocre, but really great underground scenes.
Actually, it's not that Hellboy is more profitable, it's that the studio refused to fund an expensive R-rated film with no love story or happy ending. My prediction is that Del Toro will use the success of The Hobbit to get it financed, just like Jackson did with his pet project, "King Kong."
In ATMOM only the staff at the secondary base is wiped out. One of the strong points of the story is the harsh contrast between that party's exuberance at the initial discovery of the...fossils...and what happens because of it.

Well, the closest film to it so far is Carpenters The Thing, itself based on an earlier film but both have taken an obvious inspiration from At the Mountains of Madness
Thank you, you're very kind. I've been fiddling around with some new source material and may post a revised version with a more "summer action movie" feel soon.
I just got finished reading The Nameless City. I understand why they never made a movie out of it., though it would make a killer short film.
