Good looking out by Sean Penn giving Mickey the role at the time to help get him back on track. But man did Mickey sure deliver so he made the right choice too! Nobody would have even known Jack Nicholson was in the scene with him too! Lol.
mickey's favourite's actor has always been marlon.only this performance needs an oscar.me,acting i know what it means and the change of facial expressions are suberb...mickey simply n.1
All about the set up. "He's definitely not a patient here...." I don't care if he's the bloody warden, he is broken. That' the point. That is the magic. The switch Rourke does....just stunning. From broken shambles to cool and smoking....intense. Nicholson as well, without a flaw.
brando was an acceptional actor, but Dr. Moreu and Don Juan were really his last two films where he really showed his talent for the last times. His role in The Score made it seem like he was uninterested in the part so much so, that the performance felt like a parody or caricature. That also could have been b/c he was appearantly impossible to get along with onset, and had to constantly have his needs addressed before anyone else.
@3Hits4Felix Wasn't a big fan of Brando in either of those films, but he knocked me out of my chair in "A Dry White Season". That one, in my opinion, is the last truly great Marlon Brando performance.
Rourke is up there with Brando in terms of sheer natural acting ability. So happy that he's made his comeback and is continuing to make films. The Wrestler was truly incredible.
Possibly the best living American actor. If he had a little more skill picking his roles he'd have won 20 fuckin' oscars by now. I fucking love mickey rourke

@JigsawNexus That's what they say. In July '94 was arrested by the LAPD and charged with spousal abuse. So what happend? If you know, tell me. I'd love to be mistaken...
Wow, just seeing Mickey Rourke & Jack Nicholson in the same frame, Rourke can display some damn good and powerful acting, I love how he played off Jack's "Hmm" when he tells him how pretty his daughter was. Rourke really rocked this scene, but I believe the BEST I've seen of him was in Angel Heart, my God, that climax and his acting were just superb. He was also great in Sin City & The Wrestler as well.
He always will be my great, cute, Chihuahua admiring piece of sugar no matter how many times he beated his wife...which is sad, I should damn him for something like that.
@DoubleTalkingJIve Mickey had some plastic surgery done. Probably fairly extensive. He says he "went to the wrong doctor". See Actors Studio interview. Plastic surgery can go horribly wrong.
Okay. Does anybody know what the fuck happened to Mickey's face between then and now? His face still looks somewhat normal in this video (albeit aged). Now it looks hideous!
Somewhere between the time this was filmed (ca. 2000) and the time he filmed the interview for the Angel Heart DVD (ca. 2004-2005), his face fucking exploded!
I don't buy the explanation that he had reconstructive surgery for boxing injuries since his boxing career was long over by the time he shot this scene with Jack.
@DoubleTalkingJive: I think he used botox. His lower lip is too thick and unnatural, looks slightly paralyzed (that's exactly the effect of botox). Thanks god botox effects tend to wear away in time if you stop using it. Actually in his last appearences he looked slightly better, in fact. His surgeon may have also botched a lifting, his skin looks unnatural, like if someone grabbed his cheeks and pulled back, which is actually what lifting does. I'd have a last lip surgery then stop if in him.
@Shendue Good point. I forgot about "Spun". He also did Rodriguez's movie, and looks like he hit the wall in that film as well.
I don't know his filmography by heart but I'm pretty sure he did "Spun" and the Rodriguez movie shortly after filming this scene with Nicholson, based on the release dates of the films. So you're right; he must've gotten some surgery after The Pledge, which is screwed him up badly.
All I know is when I first saw "Man On Fire" (2004), I barely recognized him!
@DoubleTalkingJive "The Rodriguez Movie" is Sin City... and he wore extensive prosthetics to create the character. But yes... plastic surgery didn't help Mickey's looks much. His acting chops have never been better though.
@DannyBoy777 That was after "The Pledge". I was talking about the Desperado sequel. He had a brief little part in that. After that, he played a lawyer in "Man On Fire", and looked like hell in that. So the surgery probably came after he filmed this movie.
I thought a cameo in film was just an appearance. This is a ROLE. Nicholson still stands, Rourke still stands, the women (sorry 'bout your names ladies) in this movie ... this is amazing. Director Sean Penn lifts up the business of movie-making to ART. "The Pledge" is a masterpiece. Keep watching it.
What does the guy on the bench keep saying "he's not a patient"? Jack Nicholson's character never referred to Mickey Rourke's character as a patient or anything to that matter.
I'm 35, this man is my generation's Brando..Every time I watch this I take a deep breath at the end..He breaks down but instead of wallowing in ' emotion ' he shakes it off and then lets it come back again, keeping you utterly riveted..Brilliant

@GoinDownToJunkieTown - I'm with you on this! I too thought he had plastic surgery right after he dropped boxing.. He was still beautiful.. i guess it was cosmetic after all.. :(

@ybot1983: Yet he was AMAZING in Iron Man 2, despite the sucky movie script (it was truly shitty, and i'm a great fan of the comic book so i'm biased in the good way). He actually pulled off one of the best and more believable villains ever.
He does about 6 different emotions in 60 seconds. He goes from zoned out to angry to relieved to reflective to emotionally disturbed to accepting. He shows you this character's whole life now in that 60 seconds. I don't think I have ever seen anything like that in any other movie.

He was already well known...so it wasn't from nowhere....check his background. He did steal the show...tho.. Mickey Rourke is one of the best and most proficient method actors that ever came along.

Couldn't agree more. I rented it because it got great reviews, and it was one of the most bleak, uneventful, disappointing movies I've ever seen, along with The Hurt Locker.
@Gtarist62 I feel the opposite about both those movies! In fact I watched them anyway despite not knowing much about them, and was pleasantly surprised by both
wow such great acting for a cameo, goes to show you how great of an actor Mickey is no matter how many times the Oscars ignore his work, his performances will always be remembered.
@raiderfan89ify i agree and fuck the oscars to be honest it's all about commercial time who cares what a bunch of old rich people say on movies fuckin mtv movie awards have more credit then the oscars at this point jk
Rourke has just got it - no matter how much he tried to self-destruct. He can get to a place that might make some people uncomfortable because its real emotion.
Rourke and Del Toro gave some of the best cameo work I've ever seen in this film. It is literally painful to watch Del Toro and Mickey in these scenes (especially Del Toro), very emotional and powerful acting; truly a testament to their huge talent.
I saw this movie within the last year. I don't remember what role Del Toro played and can't find it on the tube. Rourke's scene I did remember though. Blown away. Love how he gets "tough" at the end at tries to shake it off. With Nicholson of all people too. No doubt Del Toro was great but what was his cameo again? Uncomfortable movie though.
The great thing about Del Toro is that he is virtually unrecognizable in the film. He plays a mentally ill indian on death row. It is a very painful performance to see and not in a Cuba Gooding Jr way. I'll try to upload the scene soon enough.
There were two films that you'll find that Connery did as a get out clause to the Bond franchise to keep his acting integrity He is stunning. Part's are on youtube. The Hill and The Offence
Rourke shouldn't do the exageratted movements. He has the Connery factor which is way greater then the X Factor. I guess he wa told to. But that jerked head should have been removed. He should have led Fight Club.
I didn't know who Mickey Rourke is .. I am from India.I was told to watch "The Wrestler" God....I Broke down..he is a tough son of a Bitch...God Bless Him
He really gets to the root of his emotions. It's not about making a sad face and trying to make it look genuine. He IS being genuine. He forces those emotions out from deep in his soul. Amazing actor
This is what a cameo is all about, a small scene which is memorable but does not steal the picture from the main characters, Mickey Rourke manages to convey an entire tale from just a few tragic lines, its like you could make a spin off movie regarding this character alone. However his face looks alot less puffy and alot more normal then what it is now, and this movie wasnt made that long ago, around when did he start looking freakish?
It is absolutely amazing what Rourke can do in such a small scene. In only a few minutes, he elicits a plethora of emotions. Rourke is, without question, one of the greatest actors of our time.
Rourke can take a tiny part with very few lines and connect emotionally in a BIG way. Real acting is about so much more than external mannerisms, vocal accents, hairdos, etc - its about tapping the unconscious. Rourke is the best at that since Brando. Sean Penn and DeNiro are brilliant actors but they don't have that extra voo doo that a Marlon or a Mickey can conjure. This is a special ability to touch people's souls.
I agree. I've been Rourke fan for 25 years, since I was 13 and saw "Pope". He really can "bring it". He's one of those few actors who "bring it" to the level of poetry.
this was an example on how underrated mickey rourke is, or was for that matter, even if he had alot of bad bumps on the road, badly managed his career, and made choices that almost ruined his life, he still has great acting chops to rival that of sean penn, and even marlon brando.
mickey is such a great actor, fuck the oscars and their political bullshit, mickeys performance in the wrestler spelled oscar all over the performance.
I have seen this movie many times, that scene makes me cry EVERY time! Mickey you are the man, fuck the oscars, everyone knows who gave the best performance and it wasn't even close.
Wish I could see the entire movie! Anything Nicholson is wonderful! Is the Pledge the startback for Mickey? And it was thanks to Penn? Besides being Mads ex I dont know much about him or his acting.
Can you imagine Nicholson, Mickey, Pacino, DeNiro, Keitel and Penn doing a movie together. A god damn blockbuster with the right script.
That is the problem in Hollywood today. There are no writers with the talent to do anything for actors like this that have elevated themselves to a level far above mediocrity.
Why is it that New York Street actors just have so much more substance than most other actors? Because New York will kick the shit out of you for being weak, boring and stupid.
Great Comment!!!!! You are absolutely right about NY. A friend of mine said to me, "Why don't you leave NY?". Now, I write poetry, really put my heart and mind into it and I told her, "Because I have to be a NY writer.". Yeah, the NY actors just kill it.
These two are both well crafted and gifted actors whose portrayals of the characters excel the margins of this movie's script.
Yeah-when viewing this scene I know that Rourke's motivation to cry in this scene was improvisational genius:By studying Nicholson standing before him and acutely externalizing the reaction that he shall never excel the older actor's celebrity status.
remove the cheek implants and he would look almost the same as good old rourke. The implants make his face much wider and tight thus changing the whole look
Fucking love that smirk in 2:06, I swear. I've seen him do that same smirk in almost all his movies. Glad he's back. Best actor today. I met him also at Wrestlemania: hell of a cool guy.
Unbelievable. It just shows you: no matter what the guy's personal issues, or how badly he has managed his career, Mickey Rourke is still one of the finest actors of his generation. The only other actor I can imagine pulling off that scene would have been the movie's director, Mr. Penn.
This is Brando and James Dean all in one scene. Amazing method acting; watch Mickey go through a few emotions here...1.2.3 and he nails it. How amazing...Mickey stole the scene from Jack!
In just this brief cameo alone, it showed that both Mickey and Jack had good chemistry together...maybe these two will work together again in the near future
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
i can see a bits of the 'old', good looking mickey in the new one. subtle bits....but still what a shame! looked real cool a lifetime ago, now looks like melted plastic

Rourke and Del Toro gave some of the best cameo work I've ever seen in this film. It is literally painful to watch Del Toro and Mickey in these scenes (especially Del Toro), very emotional and powerful acting; truly a testament to their huge talent.
Tubesploitation 2 years ago
I saw this movie within the last year. I don't remember what role Del Toro played and can't find it on the tube. Rourke's scene I did remember though. Blown away. Love how he gets "tough" at the end at tries to shake it off. With Nicholson of all people too. No doubt Del Toro was great but what was his cameo again? Uncomfortable movie though.
thepoozer 2 years ago 2
The great thing about Del Toro is that he is virtually unrecognizable in the film. He plays a mentally ill indian on death row. It is a very painful performance to see and not in a Cuba Gooding Jr way. I'll try to upload the scene soon enough.

@thepoozer How can you forget the Del Toro indian sceen!

terrible acting by rourke in this

There were two films that you'll find that Connery did as a get out clause to the Bond franchise to keep his acting integrity He is stunning. Part's are on youtube. The Hill and The Offence
johnanthonyp 2 years ago
Rourke shouldn't do the exageratted movements. He has the Connery factor which is way greater then the X Factor. I guess he wa told to. But that jerked head should have been removed. He should have led Fight Club.
johnanthonyp 2 years ago
I agee on the Fight Club observation. He would have killed in that role.

Wow. That was pretty terrific. He's such a great actor. Props to Sean Penn for casting him. Even if it is in a small role.

No pretense, no 'acting'- just proof that this guy is the real deal. The Oscars may have ignored him but his work will stand the test of time.
gar137 2 years ago 9
He really gets to the root of his emotions. It's not about making a sad face and trying to make it look genuine. He IS being genuine. He forces those emotions out from deep in his soul. Amazing actor

This is what a cameo is all about, a small scene which is memorable but does not steal the picture from the main characters, Mickey Rourke manages to convey an entire tale from just a few tragic lines, its like you could make a spin off movie regarding this character alone. However his face looks alot less puffy and alot more normal then what it is now, and this movie wasnt made that long ago, around when did he start looking freakish?
ajarman123 2 years ago
It is absolutely amazing what Rourke can do in such a small scene. In only a few minutes, he elicits a plethora of emotions. Rourke is, without question, one of the greatest actors of our time.
thefaceunveiled 2 years ago 6
The one and only Rourke.
agoldenrelic1 2 years ago 3
Rourke can take a tiny part with very few lines and connect emotionally in a BIG way. Real acting is about so much more than external mannerisms, vocal accents, hairdos, etc - its about tapping the unconscious. Rourke is the best at that since Brando. Sean Penn and DeNiro are brilliant actors but they don't have that extra voo doo that a Marlon or a Mickey can conjure. This is a special ability to touch people's souls.
92ninersboy 2 years ago 6
I agree. I've been Rourke fan for 25 years, since I was 13 and saw "Pope". He really can "bring it". He's one of those few actors who "bring it" to the level of poetry.

Mickey Rourke definitely delivers a great acting moment, despite how short it is.
He indeed is a great actor.

weathered79 2 years ago
this was an example on how underrated mickey rourke is, or was for that matter, even if he had alot of bad bumps on the road, badly managed his career, and made choices that almost ruined his life, he still has great acting chops to rival that of sean penn, and even marlon brando.
raiderfan89ify 2 years ago 8
mickey is such a great actor, fuck the oscars and their political bullshit, mickeys performance in the wrestler spelled oscar all over the performance.

The oscar is not important.

I completely agree. Mickey Rourke, for 30 years, has been compelling. Great Comment!!!!!!!!!

I have seen this movie many times, that scene makes me cry EVERY time! Mickey you are the man, fuck the oscars, everyone knows who gave the best performance and it wasn't even close.
jwjr33 2 years ago 3
Wish I could see the entire movie! Anything Nicholson is wonderful! Is the Pledge the startback for Mickey? And it was thanks to Penn? Besides being Mads ex I dont know much about him or his acting.
CatpurrRobertaBobbi 2 years ago
Can you imagine Nicholson, Mickey, Pacino, DeNiro, Keitel and Penn doing a movie together. A god damn blockbuster with the right script.
That is the problem in Hollywood today. There are no writers with the talent to do anything for actors like this that have elevated themselves to a level far above mediocrity.
Why is it that New York Street actors just have so much more substance than most other actors? Because New York will kick the shit out of you for being weak, boring and stupid.

Ther were two movies made that are similar to what you described: Copland & Sleepers.

Great Comment!!!!! You are absolutely right about NY. A friend of mine said to me, "Why don't you leave NY?". Now, I write poetry, really put my heart and mind into it and I told her, "Because I have to be a NY writer.". Yeah, the NY actors just kill it.

jimmy181167 2 years ago 3
wow he is such a brilliant actor. i dont care what he looks like . i will see his movies!.
ashleyej19 2 years ago 2
These two are both well crafted and gifted actors whose portrayals of the characters excel the margins of this movie's script.
Yeah-when viewing this scene I know that Rourke's motivation to cry in this scene was improvisational genius:By studying Nicholson standing before him and acutely externalizing the reaction that he shall never excel the older actor's celebrity status.
Bravo!
345mrse 2 years ago 3
I enjoyed your comment. Do you know for a fact, though, that this was Rourke's motivation?

juanbotello1 2 years ago 3
Unbelievable. It just shows you: no matter what the guy's personal issues, or how badly he has managed his career, Mickey Rourke is still one of the finest actors of his generation. The only other actor I can imagine pulling off that scene would have been the movie's director, Mr. Penn.

Great film, disturbing, heart-breaking. Such difficult material handled brilliantly by the entire cast & directed w/true sensitivity by Sean Penn.
And this amazing scene is crystalline perfection. A distillation of everything that makes Mickey Rourke one our most powerful & compelling actors.
Peace.
