That right there, is an actor. The way he moves, how he stares off, even the way he carries himself. He could have just stood there and sung, but no. He put his whole damn soul into this. That's a true art. Beautiful.
I just hope Russell Crowe can do this part justice. He has a hard act to follow after this Awesome performance and in my opinion the best Javert ever.
A little known fact is that when the production first went to Japan, the guys who played Valjean and Javert actually played both roles and would alternate each night.
"And my thoughts fly apart. Can this man be believed? Can he crimes be forgiven, can his sins be reprieved! And must I now being to doubt, who never doubted all these years. My heart is stone and still it trembles"
I cannot believe that Russel Crowe is Javert in the movie. He will ruin the film and ruin this song and more importantly Stars which has to be my joint favourite song ever in a musical along with Bring Him Home.
@leedscab123 I think Crowe will do fine. He CAN sing. Everyone conveniently "forgets" he started out in musical theatre, in productions such as Rocky Horror Show and Blood Brothers in Australia.
@ChaoticButterfly True, but all I've heard from him so far is his rockstar voice. At least with Hugh Jackman I'm convinced he'll do fine. His performance at the Tony's was beautiful :'D
Oh gosh, I'm crying so hard. The beginning, with these two equally powerful and anxious voices....oh! And the end, with such emotion an anguish in his face and his voice...
"The darkness was complete. It was the sepulchral moment which follows midnight. A ceiling of clouds concealed the stars. The sky was only an ominous depth. The houses in the city no longer showed a single light...."
@pmoss182 They sell them (something similar, anyway) on LRP Store. I bought and wore one of them when I sang Stars at college (and also when I went to watch Les Mis in London XD )
@brantonli Not hard for a trained singer. I'm a baritone and can hold that note much longer than that (and I'm sure Quast can, too, esp since he's more of a baritenor, so it's probably easier for him than me).
@brantonli it's all about how slowly you release they air, ive held a higher note for over 20 seconds you just need to release the air really slowly and control it,
No offense to all fanatics but this 10 year anniversary concert should have been the last one. It so perfectly captures the spirit of what this musical was but it's so long in the tooth now, just end it. Les Miz will officially have "jumped the shark" when the movie gets released.
I love the new uncertainty this song his, in every other point Javert has been strong and definante and Quast just shows him completely breaking down, its sooooo well acted
Javert committed suicide because Valjean - a criminal, by Javert's understanding - did an honest deed in saving his life. That meant that arresting Valjean would be an immoral act, even if it would be lawful. Javert couldn't cope with the mental dissonance caused by the realisation that morals and laws were not one, and often man must choose one or the other. Law had always been performed in good morals, until the point his world had become 'lost in shadow'.
I don't know whose death made me cry the most: Fantine's, Eponine's, or Javert's. They were all really sad and full of emotion.
Regardless, every time I hear and watch this scene with Roger Allam, Terrence Mann, Philip Quast, or Norm Lewis, it shows how much Javert suffered.
I just hope Russell Crowe does his homework before he plays Javert in the upcoming movie. He needs to brush up on his singing and talk to Terrence Mann. :)
@rikkulockhart15 No, he needs to brush up on his singing, and talk to Philip ;) I think Crowe will do fine. He CAN sing y'know. (Been to concerts, heard him sing live, thereforeknow what I'm talking about. Plus everyone conveniently "forgets" he started out in musical theatre, in productions such as Rocky Horror Show and Blood Brothers in Australia)
@Angelrc22 Ooh he did? o: I didn't know that. Then he should do fine.
Also, I talked to my parents and Russell Crowe has been in mostly serious films, so he should do fine with the acting part. All he needs to do is talk to just ONE of the original Javerts (there's also Roger Allam and Terrence Mann, both of whom did EXCELLENT jobs and originated the roles on London and Broadway,) and he'll be able to get in touch with Javert's singing, as well as his character.
I think that Javert is not introspective enough or complex enough to see his place in society. He values order and predictability (the Stars and the Law) above all, and when Valjean doesn't act as expected his "world" is shattered and he can't deal with it. His obsession with Valjean over all those years shows he wasn't very stable to begin with.
I love this song because it shows what a tortured individual Javert is. I know that sounds mean, but you can tell how hard things are for him during this number. After chasing Valjean for so long, he realizes how terrible he has been. Javert will always be one of my favorite characters
@piratewench2011 Even in the end, Javert never thought he was wrong. He killed himself not because of shame but because he couldn't reconcile his moral values with those of the society in which he lived. Once he understood that all his dogmatism only served a system full of injustices he saw no choice but to remove himself from society.
Does anybody happen to know what the highest note in this song is? (Other than the death note at the end of course, as that can easily be done in falsetto.) I can currently only sing up G sharp 5. Not sure if I've got all these notes or not...
@AWorldWithoutTenors nice name by the way :P I don't know if you've got the right range named. Cause like, the highest note that a man sings is be valjean on "took my silver took my flight" which is a C5. so G#5 doesnt seem like a bass/baritone note.
@thestainisgone485 Thanks for the reply! Yeah, I don't read music very well yet. I was basing the "G5" off of the song "Make Them Hear" from Ragtime, which has my highest note in the ending phrase. On Music Notes it lists the top vocal note in that song as a G Sharp 5. Kinda weird...
I prefer Alfie Boe over Colm Wilkinson. I prefer Samantha Barks over Lea Salonga. Heck, I even prefer Nick Jonas over Michael Ball. But Damn Philip Quast, that was riveting.

@murphy1980100 I don't know, I just don't like Michael Ball's interpretation or acting in the part of Marius from what I've seen in the 10th Anniversary concerts. He's too mature, too sure of himself.
@Iced1992 Agree...almost everyone I've ever spoken with thinks the performers from
the 10thanniversary are the best they've heard ...ever... I wish they had cast Philip Quast in the movie, I just can't see Russel Crowe pulling it off.
I have seen Les Miz twice in London, twice in New York and once in Toronto and Philip Quast is Javert. No one else comes close. When he sings you cannot help but be emotional and drawn in. He will endure forever with his role as Javert.
This man is amazing. Hav you ever noticed the smile when he sings "reprieved"? I smile every time, not only because it's such a beautiful sound, but because he hit it perfectly. It would only be too easy to turn that note sour, instead, he nailed it. AMAZING!
@SunderheartMetal Break a leg! Javert would be an amazing role to play. I love Quast's Javert because he seems more like a tortured soul than a truly evil man. He's great framework for the character, but I'd be careful to make sure than you put your own spin on the role as well. =)

I completely agree that this man personifies Javert. I can listen to "Stars" and this song, and goose pimples are often. It's like heaven. But I disagree with the commentator here who says, correctly, that everything was black or white for Javert, but That Valjean was gray. Valjean was white, using the same non-racial metaphore, the entire time. It was only Javert who thought he was black. The book, modern opera, is about many things, among them is misperception.
@bigmarty56 What the person meant was that Javert sees things in black in white, as in there is right and there is wrong, nothing in between (grey). Then, Javert is thrown because Jean Valjean is in that grey area. He's done wrong, but he's changed, when Javert doesn't believe that's possible. Valjean in this sense, is challenging everything Javert has ever believed.
Oh my god, I just love the menacing snarl of this Javert so much. His voice says it all. And he is SO perfect for the time period. His features and his voice. And Colm Wilkinson is my favorite Valjean too.
This musical got great performers. Michael ball and Phillip Quast and the valjiean. (what ever his name is) Are Great this Jevert is great ! im 15 btw :P but yea my mom had the musical on disks till we lost it T-T. i like this jevert the best better then the 25Th one.
Philip Quast is the reason why Javert is my favorite character. The mark of a great actor/performer is that he or she makes you see what they see...makes you believe in what they believe in...I swear I forgot there was a microphone in front of him...All I saw was a man realizing that the world was not as clear as he thought, that it was not just black and white, good or bad, but there was the gray area that Jean Valjean belonged to...
@LuvlyUnknown Well, you have to realize, Valjean isn't just in a gray area, it's more than that. Valjean isn't merely part good and part bad, but a redeemed man, formerly mostly bad, but now mostly good. What Javert is really finding out is that he was wrong earlier when he said, "Men like you can never change." The dichotomy that he deals with is justice and mercy, the question being, "Shall his crimes be reprieved?" What really defines Valjean is the Christian idea of Atonement and Redemption.
"And must I now begin to doubt, who never doubted all these years. My heart is stone, and still it trembles. The world I have known is lost in shadows."
This line justifies Javert as a sympathetic character. Good lord.
I've seen the show on the West End, I've listened to countless recordings, and I think Quast's performance in the TAC just may be the greatest performance of any character in Les Mis ever. He is that good.
he's ok. his got the anguish and a nice voice but all the people in this video dont seem to relize u need to sing SLOWER and stretch the words! thats the beauty of the music of les mis!
That right there, is an actor. The way he moves, how he stares off, even the way he carries himself. He could have just stood there and sung, but no. He put his whole damn soul into this. That's a true art. Beautiful.

Oh my god, I just love the menacing snarl of this Javert so much. His voice says it all. And he is SO perfect for the time period. His features and his voice. And Colm Wilkinson is my favorite Valjean too.

How a giant like him manages to look so vulnerable and lost... a true actor. And his voice. And the lost-little-puppy look. And the hair. <3

LuvlyUnknown 11 months ago 173
@LuvlyUnknown absolutely well said! I agree 100%!
chaksheba 6 months ago
@LuvlyUnknown Well, you have to realize, Valjean isn't just in a gray area, it's more than that. Valjean isn't merely part good and part bad, but a redeemed man, formerly mostly bad, but now mostly good. What Javert is really finding out is that he was wrong earlier when he said, "Men like you can never change." The dichotomy that he deals with is justice and mercy, the question being, "Shall his crimes be reprieved?" What really defines Valjean is the Christian idea of Atonement and Redemption.

Thank you for posting. Philip Quest is the best Javert. Love the way he holds the note on the word REPRIEVED.

"And must I now begin to doubt, who never doubted all these years. My heart is stone, and still it trembles. The world I have known is lost in shadows."
This line justifies Javert as a sympathetic character. Good lord.

Philip Quast - Best. Javert. Ever!
jzbowen 11 months ago 2
I've seen the show on the West End, I've listened to countless recordings, and I think Quast's performance in the TAC just may be the greatest performance of any character in Les Mis ever. He is that good.
jmarshall60 11 months ago 2
His voice is so magical. I love the little head roll he does when he goes, "It is either Valjean or JAVEEERT!"
