  • @JHAAMYEESS you have a strange kind of humor

  • @JHAAMYEESS I am not an US american.. I live in germany

  • High powered rockets. The Gammon makes the aircraft dive to counter so that the little boys (Goas for example) can down them.

  • if alians attack us... i want to have one of these babys..

  • It is still some good, but was cancelled for S-400.

It is a question - is mobile ABM system better?!

Now Sa-5 (Vega, Dubna) is forgotten everywhere, but it is still powerful, and can do many things even nowadays!

No, it can not strike cruise missiles and low-flying planes, but AWACS are very good target for it, in this mission it is even on S-400 level!

  • This is Power !

  • the only air-defence missile with capability to carry nuclear warhead

  • @kosiak10851 wrong. the sa-2e guideline carries nuclear warhead.

  • only the E version =D

  • Uh. Ever hear of Nike-Hercules, and pretty much the entire Nike program after Ajax? Everyone who had nukes in the 50's and 60's put them on SAMs. :P

  • I thought they are ABM missiles?

  • Negative, Nike Hercules was an air defense missile, which also had a ground attack mode. The idea was you could take out a formation of bombers with fewer missiles using nuclear warheads. Export versions of the Hercules were non-nuclear.

Actually the SA-2 on the Russian side even had a nuclear tipped version.

    Nukes on everything!!! D:

  • @kosiak10851 I believe the Islamic Republic of Iran has the SA-5 in the role of an ABM system. They are also effective against cruise missiles, an any other non maneuvering aerial targets like AWACS, and tankers. Range is over 250 kilometers!

  • Operational range, altitude and speed is top notch even today. Should be a serious threat for AWACS. Hope the jamming resistance is adequate.

  • Wow my last name is gammon

  • I also read about that as well, seems no one has a clear idea. Although using it at such close ranges would be wasteful due to the prevalence of smaller systems designed for that very job.

  • The SA-5 was designed to take out the SR-71. Which it never even came close to.

  • With a modern radar attached to it, possibilities are endless.

  • SA-5 is becoming obsolete. Ever hear of the SA-20? Yes, I know it has a shorter range. But what about the SA-X-21? With a predicated range of over 200 NM. Yeah, fucking beast.

  • Where was the target?

  • It could be a long ways away.

  • Minimum of 60km.

  • Minimum? No, that's wrong.

  • If you disagree why not suggest something you feel to be more realistic instead of contradicting me?

  • I never contradicted you. And . . .Some sources claim that the minimum effective range is 60 km (37 mi) due to the burn time of the rocket boosters since the rocket can not maneuver until they are jettisonned, but other sources claim that this is due to an intelligence mix-up over another missile and the actual minium range is 7 km (4 miles).

  • you just saw the rocket booster fall off after 5 seconds. also the 60km min was a rumor that has wa proven false by ukraine after the fall of soviet union.

  • what country to make this gammon missile

  • The Russians

  • kool

  • So , wheres the big boom ? >:)

  • 400km in range, max speed Mach 8. Still a capable missile, it should be done some works on missile guidance and have still years of use.

  • Just Use Radar Jamming Consufe It Radar Then Use Laser Guided Missile To Knock It Out. Iraq Have A Lot Of This SAM All Knock out.

  • Eah, all bribed out.

  • Well, I don't think you can do that easily, Long Range SAM will likely be protected by Short ranged ones, like TOR-M1 which can destroy Missiles like HARM or Precision Guided Munitions like Paveway series or GBU-XX series

  • Stupid idiot. Iraq doesnt have SA-5's they have SA-3 (and Pechora variants) and SA-2. Syria has SA-5's and North Korea.

  • Matanjun ,

before spouting that nonsense and bullshit do some research !.

  • let em think they are tough so they get raped in iran

  • Does it's job!

  • Y R talkin 'bout aux lift-of engines. Usally separated at T+5 sec.

  • Love the older SAMs so much power at lift off (Highpower rocketry is one of my hobbies) :)

  • This missile is also design for ABM role.

  • That is a old "single digit" russian sam system. Those are outdated eaven by russian standards. The now duoble digit ones(sa-10, sa-12, sa-20)are way more lethal and are considered as par or better than patriot. but because export of those systems is limited by russians its not public knowedge how they fair against modern western birds(f-15, f-16, f-22, JSF, Typhoon etc)

  • Years ago the Ukranian Air Force shot down a passenger plane by mistake with such thing.

  • That thing is really sick, and is designed to hit maneuvering fighters at 200km. The downside of the missile is that it's old and unreliable. Their unit price is also high, higher than that of a S-300.

  • If you read the description it states that it is limited to "engagements against relatively large unmaneauverable targets... past 60 km". That means that an attack aircraft can sneak in low and much closer and attack with a guided-weapon that comes in at tree-top height.

  • You're right, that EC-2 wasn't really a fighter plane :p

  • Thats why they have different SAMs for different roles.
