Because I've been on vacation to Britain, and I've met many lovely people there.
There aren't as many differences between us than we might think.

Hi neighbours, a few months ago on TV "60 Jahre Grundgesetz" made me disappointed. The obvious Beethoven 9th was performed (nice), but not the German anthem. Ill praise the day that on occasions like this you democrats patriotically sing "Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit". I lived for more than a year in Germany, and the first thing that comes in my mind when I remember Germans is their hospitality. And a country that pretty well knows its Geschichtsbewältigung. Many reasons to be proud of.

Of course the USA had their national interests in fighting WWII, they are not an altruistic charity organisation.
Why can't an American strategic interest not coincide with the liberation of my country? The alternative of American liberation was a Russian occupation: the next oppressor of freedom of speech. Under nazi and a following communist regime you and I couldnt even have this discussion on youtube. For both of us it meant Dachau, the Gulag or Bautzen.

After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour and Hitlers declaration of war, Roosevelt finally could alter the Lend-Lease Act (in witch the USA paid the USSR too) into a 'Europe first' declaration. Since then the USA faced up to a massive roll on logistic problem. For a second front, troops and material for a land war had to be shipped to severely bombarded ports in England, while fighting German U-boats in the Atlantic Ocean. Altogether it took the USA only two-and-half years. Impressive.

You are partly right, Stalingrad was the turning point in this war. But I dont agree with your statement that Germany lost the war when it lost the 6th army in Stalingrad. The nazis only lost the war when they were forced to surrender in 1945. Mind that when the Americans landed on June 6 1944 in Normandy the nazis still occupied my country, deportating jewish families with their children to the chimneys of Auschwitz, that were smoking on overtime.

Von Deutschland wird keine Gefahr mehr ausgehen. Die Fehler, die die Siegermaechte nach 1918 begingen, sind und waren unverzeihlich. Der Zweite Weltkrieg war eine Folge des Versailler Vertrages. Nach 1945 war es wichtig und richtig, Deutschland in Europa zu integrieren. Ich bin stolz, einer Nation anzugehören, die aus ihren Fehlern gelernt hat und die Aussöhnung mit den anderen Völkern auf ihre Fahnen geschrieben hat. Ein bitteres Kapitel deutscher Geschichte bleibt der Holocaust.

Actually, there is a strange phenomenon I like to explain. Type 'German Anthem' in youtube outside of Germany and the nastiest blunt extreme nationalist 'Ueber ales' and racist (with swastika) sites come first. In general these sites are not run out of Germany, where the law forbids the swastika. Unfortunately a pathetic love for nazism is an international obsession. Type 'GSTQ' (British anthem) and my first on the list directs me to a website claimed by the BNP (British sort of neonazis).

Herzlichst gratuliere my German neighbours. 60 years Grundgesetz. I saw the broadcasting last Saturday of the beautiful ninth symphony of Beethoven. I expected (no, I longed for) this joyful day would end with a good benign patriotic understanding of you singing altogether the German anthem: Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit.
Unfortunately the organisation of the event is to shy to be proud of the German democracy to sing the anthem.

I did a tour of southern and eastern Germany last september: Frankfurt, Cologne, Nuremberg, Munich, Dresden and I loved the places and the people. Sure you can be proud to be German, be patriotic but I hope you also think of yourself as European too.
