Headful of Hollow - I suspect this note may not go down well...but here goes - and I do this out of respect and admiration.....
Love Dave - one of the greatest songwriters ever. We saw him at one of their first gigs when they came over from Perth, at the 1st floor of the Trade Union Club. Then followed them forever, everywhere.....Calenture is one of the greatest albums, ever...
But he was unlikely to be with us forever - two hearts weren't enough for his life and body.

Watched them at the International 2 in Manc-chester in about 87/88 i think. very raw 16/17 year old, we thought it was club so went dressed up. Still laught at the thought of me mate in Blazer, tie and Chinos in a rock club to this day. I got away a bit lighter due to a big coat and dark trousers. Still love them.
PS I didn't know until recently that David had died so young and tragically. The story of this rock group would make a very touching movie. I think his story should be told.
The thing to remember is this is not Australian music, its Western Australian music the rest of the country would be lost without us. (AC DC is also WA)
It doesn't matter how old you are. It's the music that counts. To be honest I don't understand why people under 20 feel the need to say how old they are and then justify listening to music that isn't on radio 1.
I love 80's indie but only got into these guys 4 years ago............It's amazing, Aussies can actually make music that isn't a joke :-)
well i for one really love this version and listened to it all through out my childhood. obviously i still listen to it because it's a wonderful song and just because I'm 16 doesn't mean my opinions are worthless. ( I'm not sure but maybe people would think that which is why I'm making the preemptive strike) I'm not trying to be hostile it's just my point of view. anyway thanks juliesmil for putting this up I'm thinking of using the lyrics of this song for my homework comparing it to poetry.
I tried for over a decade to remember the title of this song and band. For a while I thought I had imagined it.. Then I happened to find it today. Great. But the song sounds a little different. I also remember a video that used to go with this song that was full of stop motion animation. Anyone know where I could find it.
davidscalling I think the version Of Trick Of The Light your thinking of is the slightly earlier and much better version on a record called in the pines. I find this version a little over produced. great genuinely underrated band
sirlordcomic, I think you are right about this being overproduced (or something). I find this version slightly flat and uninspireing. Not at all what I remember. But the video I saw was from around 1988 so I am not sure if it was from an earlier version.
The "in the pines" version was so under produced I am amazed it got onto the tape at all.
But it is most probably more quintessentially the real triffids vibe, they were more into clean and more raw sounds, especially when they played live.
Manys years ago i saw them support echo and bunnymen at the old acdemday in brixton, the triffids blew them off the stage.

Dave McComb was a genius. I wonder what would've happened if he stayed around a little bit more.

the triffids!!!!
it's not even their best song, the seabirds, estuary bed, wide open road, etc...are so great
but this is such a beautifull song as well. The most underestimated group, I am so happy I found them :)

It did sound better on the radio in the 80's. I think digital gives it too much space.
