The violin part is so hard for this. Playing it on sunday in a local orchestra. It's really fast plucking, you either need fingers made of leather or a very good plectrum. I'm using the latter. It's made worse by the fact that it's the first piece.
I heard it tonighton Radio 2 played by a brass band and it was awful. I have scanned some of the various versions on here and I have to say that Greg lake did a great job arranging it and making it worth listening to. Sorry about your fingers.
for anyone wondering-lt Kije isnt a real person and never was-but from what we know,he is a fictional person made up by 2 russian soldiers to avoid being screwed over by their boss (the tsar at the time) and thus kije was born and given a life and a family, but when the tsar wanted to meet kije-they faked his death...sort of =D
Prokofiev's music is from the film version of Yuri Tynyanov's story about the fictional Lieutenant Kizhe. You may be familiar with the story since it is the basis for the early Capt. Tuttle episode of the M*A*S*H TV series.
The reason it sounds Christmasy is cause it's title is Troika which is a 3 horse sled.(Very fast in it's day.) Kije is about a cavalry lieutenant. I have heard a vocal version of this. He is singing about how fickle women can be.
I first heard this thanks to Woody Allen's fantastic film Love & Death! I think the music sounds like sleigh bells through the snow which is what gives that Christmassy feel.
Love this song. I have to wonder though how the hell did it become a Christmas song. At least in the UK it is. Not that I'm complaining. First heard it on Love and Death (Woody Allen) when I was a bairn.
The other tracks from this suite also feature in Love & Death (great film). Including the very lovely Song, which is used when Allen and Keaton's characters fall in love.
The Score & Parts for Prokofiev: Lieutenant Kijé Op.60 can be found at SheetMusicX [dot[ com it's really fun to play

I played this on the piccolo. Sadly, you can't hear the excruciatingly difficult solo in this ensemble.

The most commonly cited usage of this song is in Woody Allen's "Love and Death".

@davinata Not sure, but Greg Lake lifted some of the song onto his 1975, "Father Christmas" Song
