  • id wish that it wont be like every time i write: How to play metal.....

    this idiot shows up!!....

  • Thanks for this video...i already have learned a lot from expert village...

  • Comment removed

  • awesome!! thanks!

  • 1:24 sounded like the solo of slipknot;s psychosocial!

  • i love legato

  • great video.Learned a lot. if u r looking for some licks to help with your improvisation then check out my channel...:)

  • Exactly. There exist better suited guitars nowadays, try a Fernandes Revolver Pro 81.

  • It's oke man, People are jalous

  • Woah...I've been playing legato for a year without even realising what it was....cool....

  • he is a beast no dought about it

  • thanks dude, this vid was perfect for what i wanted to know

  • what you're doing is not legato it's plain awful!!!along with your technique!!! see Marshall Harrison legato. You should not be teaching that garbage.

  • @lselvon Agreed!

  • @lselvon This is a Heavy Metal Legato you should pay attention to the Marshall Harrison videos.

  • @lselvon honestly i dont see why you have to criticize him, maybe his legato is sloppy because he doesnt use it in his style, a lot of players use this technique but you dont go insulting his technique. hes actually better at picking fast than i am, and i bet he can do quite a few good things on guitar that you cant. Maybe he's just showcasing a legato lesson to cover all the techniques used for playing metal leads. so maybe you should take a good hard look at your technique first.

  • Can somebody explain to me what he does between 1:23 to 1:31 ???

  • strats are so lame you should play a better guitar stratocasters are good for country songs or blink 182

  • @urface88888 Actually there good for Metal aswell just might want to get diffrent pickups if your serious about metal style playing and own a strat. There like Telecasters not meant for metal but can do the job.

  • @urface88888

yeah, you're right i'm fuckin' sick of seeing strats everywhere

  • hahahahaha u suck!!1

  • This is for lazy guitar playes that don't want to take the time to develop thier picking hand. This is one of the things that separate a guitar player from a musician.

  • @10INCHCRUSHER Or...It's for people who want to be able to both get staccato and legato sounds out of their guitar.

  • this is NOT clean. i cant do better but its not Clean

  • TOCAS ASQUEROSAMENTE SUCIO

  • Why do both highest rated comments have "crash-course to become a rock god" in them?

  • Dude you need to join a band

  • What type distortion are you using? Is it a pedal or just a setting on a particular amp? Thanks for your time.

  • what this is is is is is is is is is is....

  • I really really really wish I knew how to play like that :(

  • @LaFemmeDemon hey man just learn the naturan minor scale and play it in difrent octaves using this legato technique and you will be shreding in no time

  • @MetalInstrumentals Um, Ima chick. Lol. And I have no idea what you just said. I can't play the guitar AT ALL. Thank you though. :)

  • The first thing that guy plays is actually A Dorian. Yes the notes are the same, but it can be misleading to people who watch this.

  • Sloppy.

  • bad tone

  • @riskotibor80 the purpose is the teaching not the tone!

  • @iluvlezi i kno exactly what your talking about. Learning difficult techniques or just learning to play period takes long gruling practice sessions daily. Ive been playing for only about 3 years now and when i first started i sucked so bad just like everyone else did but now i kept learning the real way and once u know "where everything is" it all comes together and makes sense and u build up a sort of music theory.

  • what scale is he playing?

  • @leachim6 A dorian i think not too sure

  • @kieranguitarman1 ionian...

  • oh shit,this sucks ass!

  • looks like tony hawk...

  • He kind of looks like TIll Lindemann (Rammstein)

  • @somguy33

    ein bisschen, ja.

  • @somguy33 wtf r u smoking not at all

  • dude... legato isnt fast playing ;O legato is like connected notes...the opposite of stacato...expert? hardly a musicain, sorry. hey, but u still know how to move ur fingers on the guitar eh?:D

  • anyone want to learn real legato watch allan holdsworth the key is to hammer on the notes as you ascend and descend

  • his hand looks like a spider xD

  • @iluvlezi YEAHHHHHH!!!! HELL YEAH!!!! ^_^ Now this's one of the best comments I've read on YouTube!!!

  • if you watch Luke Hoskin play from protest the hero he does them insane

  • Isnt this sweeping??

  • @Gibsonsgman1214 pretty mutch its just that on sweep picking you dont have to have hammer ons and pull offs it can be just 1 note per string with sweep picking

  • @Gibsonsgman1214 Sweeping is playing arpeggios (individual chord notes) or individual scale notes, this is just playing scales. He's picking the strings and then just does a bunch of hammer ons and pull offs.

  • i hate expert village. they hardly ever get real "experts" in to do the lessons. this guy may know a bit theory wise but he's such a sloppy player, can't even do legato without ringing notes out left and right.

also, i understand why people are complaining as this isn't really a lesson at all. if you're at the point where you're good enough to comprehend what he's doing, you know how to do legato and can play better than him. this isn't a lesson at all.

  • coool!

  • Hi, dis' Gary Shit

  • @iluvlezi geeez take it easy. lol

  • he is a terribad teacher. doesnt slow down enough to really show you what he is doing

  • Thnx

  • anybody got tips on how to make your hammer ons and picked notes equal volume?

  • @DTPVH I know this won't help much but basically, you practice. Alot. A good idea is to play the legato passages real slow to a metronome. As slow as it has to be so everything sounds equal. Practice that for awhile then move the tempo up. Practice this new speed. Rinse and repeat.

  • @ElJucifer i've practiced legato A LOT but it still sounds different. it might be my amp so i'll have to wait on my new one to see.

  • @DTPVH No, no, no, no! It's never the amp. If something sounds wrong its never the amp. Sure it might not have the tone you want but it's never the amps fault, you can learn on the shittiest cheapest gear so long as it has strings and makes noise. Seriously, the metronome is your friend here!

  • @ElJucifer its gone the tone i want. its a little epiphone amp that somehow sounds like a marshall with twenty time more gain.

  • Wow that was a nice simple lesson......

  • I think its big headed to suggest that everyone should learn by ear essentially, I myself have no problem learning just through hearing what he's doing, but I acknowledge that other learners are going to want tabs etc

  • Nothin' wrong w/ learnin' crash course. Learnin' is learn'. The easier the better.

We need an eye cam from the teacher's view. & Real fukking slow pleeeez &

    SERIOUS THANX!!!!!!!

  • @iluvlezi man stfu

  • 0:05 what this it, is is i s....

  • Not a very good "how to" lesson......oh well good thing I have perfect pitch....makes learning guitar a lot easier!

  • Very sloppy....

If u want to learn to shred go and buy Speed Kills by Batio or Intense Rock by Paul Gilbert.

  • he only tells you what the meaning of those techniques are ... but he doesnt teach anithing so it shouldnt be a "How To "

  • @billster96 yeah well you probably piss him off too so shut the fuck up

  • dunno y but this guy pisses me off. a lot.

  • @billster96 rofl

  • heavy metal on a strat?

  • @wegonnaownyanoob shhhhhhhhhh

  • @wegonnaownyanoob i know right?

  • expert village is the worst for music lessons. Funny how he can barely do it cleanly.

  • @bungholio80 Jou poes man.

  • expert village is the worst for music lessons.

  • These vids are awesome. Thing is, I'm already a pretty good player simply looking for some new techniques, or to improve on current ones. If I was just starting out, I wouldn't have a clue what this guy was doing. If you feel clueless, don't hate on this guy, just keep learning and pretty soon this will all make sense. When I watch him do this for 2 seconds, I totally l get it.

  • @narutoguy56 fail

  • @iluvlezi I really don't see why it is that everybody hates Schutt. I see nothing wrong with the way he teaches (sure, sometimes he makes unbelieveably stupid mistakes) and find that a beginner to intermidiate player could find quite a bit of use (being one myself). This is NOT a crash-course on how to be a rock god, but simply a lesson in basic technique. I would say that some scale patterns would be more informative than this, but for people who are good with scales, this may be quite useful.

  • @forglegorktheork Agreed, i think its because people are just mindless followers.

  • when I first started playing guitar Expert Village was crap, or so I thought - after a while you know exactly what the hell that guy is talking about, and you can easely understand each lesson - all you need to know is:

    scales

    basic scale structure

    Pull-off

    Hammeron

also you need to know that the scales are named after the place where your fingers make a bar over the strings - Example -

    you take a powerchord F

then the scale starts on the first fret

    that fucking simple!

  • U shred gary, where can i buy your lessons?

  • @mvonwedeking Don't buy. Bootleg. He's not the best (or the worst) guy to learn from; I would try to torrent one or something if I were you. If you want some really good shredding technique, try to find a Joe Satriani or Steve Vai method interview. THAT shit will get you skills quick if you're not too much of a n00b to understand the scales and whatnot.

  • @narutoguy5

    haha, not even 1!

  • @iluvlezi look at you trying to act like ur a genious faggot

  • @theATOMIClol: @dragonkiller63729 Checkmate

    ...FATALITY!

  • not very clean

  • If you want to learn to play metal you have to get your ass of youtube and learn it by your self.

  • "Hi, this is Gary Shit and we are talking about heavy metal guitar(????). Right now wr are going to talk about lego playing.

  • I always do this then I just start tappin and end up playing erouption :( and now that's all I can play:(

  • @dragonkiller63729

Lazy, huh? Suppose so, seeing as how I attempted to follow the instructions and techniques in this video for more than two hours before *gasp* spending time looking for a better video! Wow! If I'm so "lazy", why did I do that? If I'm soo "lazy" I would have tried what was in this video once and then put my guitar away in frustration. Last time I checked, persistence is not a sign of laziness. Get a day job, you fucking prick.

At least I don't play Blink182 covers. Yuck.

  • @angryfatkid How's Baghdad, Iraq for a day job? Because that IS my day job.

  • I still prefer lessons from the people at "next level guitar". At least they were all well described and well explained.

  • So easy if you get it (and practiced for a month or two), but I didn't learn it from this guy. Worst teacher ever.

  • @angryfatkid He gives you the tips and techniques, and even gives you great examples. It's your job to learn them and implement them into YOUR style. You sound pretty fucking lazy to me.

  • Comment removed

  • The closed captioning is distracting and occasionally covers his fingers. And I don't think there are too many deaf guitarists out there.

  • Even though he doesn't exactly tell you what note he hits when he plays it, he does mention in the beginning it's in E Minor, which is E F# G A B C D E, and you can play all those notes in any pattern, up then down or down then up. Then once you get used to this scale, apply the same concept to other scales.

  • To Angryfatkid. Maybe its not his teaching. Dude I understand perfectly. Does that make you the retard of Youtube?

  • @LewisDrummerful I think it does make him a retard!!! Lmao

  • THIS ISNT METAL FRIGGIN ARTARDZ

  • Pick my new nose you little bastard!

  • This is quite bullshit, doesnt teach anything, i feel sorry for everyone who actually bought this.

  • he is a rubbish teacher doesnt even tell you how to do it just shows you!

  • Wow a Fender, so much for heavy metal ==

  • @Exile262 his has humbuckers so i guess it would work okay for metal but my single coils sound kind of weird

  • he is my favorite teacher from expert village, hes the only one who actually knows what hes doing, the only problem is that you have to string his videos together cause hell tell you something in one video that actually helps a lot, and wont mention it in other videos.

  • pick my new string..

    pick my new string....

    pick my new string......

    pick my new string.........

  • @angryfatkid No TABS no strings showing, no bars showing ;S

  • Legato is not too hard to be honest. Thunderstruck taught me to play Legato :D. All you gotta do is to learn using pull-off and hammer-ons. It doesn't have to be fast...

  • @angryfatkid Yeah, you don't wanna piss off the angry fat kid.

  • @angryfatkid It is easy to tell gary schutt that he is bad, but it is hard to actually get gary schutt to care what you think. So just accept the fact that he is awesome at guitar and hate on someone else. Because hate mailing only means you are jealous.

  • the power of high distortion ......

  • So by playing one string you can play all the rest with your left hand fingers ?!

  • @angryfatkid Expert Village seems to do that a lot.

  • I usually do pull-off, hammer-on, pull, pull, hammer, pull, hammer, hammer cause im cool

  • dont know why but i just dont like this dude

  • @blackbloodvomitorium He looks like his name could be Brad. Brad is the biggest douchebag name by the way.

  • @Ryu12543 Chad is the biggest douche bag name.

  • @close2insanity Lol that's up there. Me and my friend actually discuss douchebag names and we mentioned Chad. He thinks Glen is a douchebag name, Idk about that one...

  • Remove the C C from the screen, put them above, not on the guitar fret/strings area, dud!?

  • cool but u lost me at pull off

  • @angryfatkid u got that right he is either an idiot that doesnt know how to teach or an asshol most likely the 2nd

  • okay ... he wails but i hav learned nothing xD

if i wanted to see some shredding i couldve looked up some shank man xP

  • u make it look so easy..and i hope it is easy!

  • mark tremonti is an amazing legato style player!

  • @angryfatkid he did fine. this lesson isnt for begginers at guitar

  • i learned nothing but it was still cool

  • thats as sloppy as a sloppy joe!

  • sure, you can play. but you can't teach.

  • tab that dude, explain something more....

  • It's pretty simple angry fatty, learn your scales and then play them for 10 years! And get outside and lose some weight!

  • He is showing how it's done what don't you understand angryfatkid?

  • Yeah, the point of this is to get basic understanding of what legato is, NOT the exact patterns he is playing. As far as "poor technique" goes, sure, there is some slightly sloppy playing, but I never once heard him saying that he is the world's first and foremost legato virtuoso. He is NOT showing off., he is playing common uses of legato. If he played everything slow, then you'd be bitching about how he sucks or didn't show what its REALLY supposed to sound like in context. Some people...

  • thank u, i was always confused on how to do it and watching this vid has made it look clear, he makes it look easy, now to practice.

  • If you are a better player than Gary, "BULLY FOR YOU" ! Move on and quit knocking him for tring to share and help others learn. If you are not better than Gary, then listen up. You might learn something. I've watched all his videos and they seem simple enough. If you really want it, you can learn it. But you have to commit and don't give up!!

  • Keep doing what you're doing Gary! I've been playing for 35 years and mastered many techniques, including creating some of my own very unique ones as well. I must say to everyone, "Don't give up so easily". Pay close attention, pausing and rewinding if you need to. Playing these techniques is NOT easy! It takes lots of dedicated practice to train your hands before you can play like this. Knowing the techniques is one thing, and making your hands perform them is another.

  • i hate this guy so much

  • wow i had no i dea how to do that before!!! oh no wait.... its self-explanatory

Ur a sucky teacher i hope you dont get paid for this

  • @captainclayman this isnt even real legato, watch jim root from slipknot, he plays real legato

  • he's name is gary shit?

  • thanxx this really helps u make it so much simpler for me after doing it slow

  • Oh, come on people, please. Don't you understand? You DON'T HAVE TO play EXACTLY the thing he is showing. The idea is to use your IMAGINATION using the patterns. I find these videos really helpful.

  • @angryfatkid He is showing us how to do it. It is VERY self explanitory. Please check out my video of Beast and the harlot for a detailed look.

  • man, just stop uploading these videos, pls, before someone gets hurt, it's not enough to explain, you not doing it correctly, so people might get wrong impression of how to play it, so give it up, please!

  • i knew it without knowing it...

    makes sense?

  • are you all retarded? do you not know how to pull-off or hammer-on? im trying to practice this technique for soloing and i'm glad this video was posted

  • Metal on a Fender? You should buy a dress and move to France. And by the way you're tone sounds like shit

  • i use a fender jazzmaster and play metal sounds just fine to me

  • thats why i dont buy these professional instructor videos because all the do is say "so you..umm you do this" then they do something really cool, that if they would slow it down and tell me the frets hes on, that I might be able to play it. any recommendations to good instruction are welcome.

  • you should buy the "rock house" dvds for ur fav musician their dam helpful... i never thought i could learn an alexi lahio lick but i did :)

  • Is it just me or was that as bout as clear as mud?

  • If you want to learn fast then vlook up metal method dvd by dmarks he is awsome, but I think Gary has helped me alot in the past understand how to play

  • @angryfatkid Lol! Don't be afraid to use your ears! Try to get some of it. Leave it alone, learn some other stuff, then come back to the video, and you'll get the rest.

  • hes totally explaining it well enough for me, just pull off instead of picking the same string. ive only been learning for a couple of weeks, and this was a great help, thanks author, you shred nicely

  • That was cool, but he was showing off more then teaching.

  • what a horrible tone

  • guys im new to legato hammers are easy bt pulls they bit the shit out of me spec fr three note per string pattern,it hurts a lot in finger tip and wrest.

any want to share his exp hw much time it would take to nail that fabulous tech

  • @xeeet99 Buddy spell correctly, I can barely even see what the hell you're trying to say.

  • If you're feeling pain that's good, that means soon you'll get it. Check out Rockongoodpeople's video on finger strength building exercises.

  • @xeeet99 Try to relax while doing it, down press your fingers to ur fretboard, thats a very common flaw

  • @xeeet99 theres nnothing you can do but practice man. you can learn all the tecqnecs that all the experenced players do, but alls you ned to do is practice and stick to it. thats how you become one of the dudes your asking

  • Cool vid, check my lesson on sweeps out...

  • hmmm...this is not so expert...

  • i usually hate these expert village vids but this one was great

  • i wish there were some tabs with it lol but that was awesome

  • so it's kinda like a sweep pickin'?

  • great vid this explained it well
