As Jolson was probably the greatest performer of the first half of the 20th Century, Davis, the actor, dancer, comedian, and singer MUST be the greatest performer of the second half of the 20th Century.

This is the best video depicting the the storyline of the lyrics...5* ...Tom Jones did an excellent job in singing this song. However, I think the best rendition was done by Bobby Cole. Of all the different artists who have sung this song, I consider only three have truly sung with a reverence and emotion honoring Bill Bojangles Robinson. They are Bobby Cole, Sammy Davis Jr. and Tom Jones.
I never really cared for the Nitty Gritty version of this song. Their commitment to a constant tempo and rhythm compromises a lot of the emotion. Robbie Williams' is ok, but his voice isn't my favorite. In my mind, Sammy Davis Jr. had the definitive version, and this is a close second.
I remember this from when it aired in 1971 on the Tom Jones Show, and it's just as great as I remember it. It's wonderful that things like this can be given new life on the Internet.
with all due respect, the nitty griity dirt bands version is definitive. they might have not done anything else but they nailed this song with just the right amount of joy and remeniscent melncholy.
@racer111259 Respect accepted. I draw two thoughts here. You are right--as a total song the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band rendition is the definitive version. Few fair minded people would disputed that. Beautiful performance by a group. But as a vocalist, Tom's performance is superior to the band's lead singer's vocal performance, and that is not a knock at all on that other guy. After all, Tom was one of the greatest pure vocalists of his time.
@357413 R u a total crank, this version has no heart at all n im amazed Sammy Daies Junior even agreed to be in the video for this toal piece of cheese !!! absolutely terrible, if u wana listen to mr bo jangles listen to Sammy doin it this is a disgrace !

Sammy agreed to this as this was before he (Sammy) had recorded the song. He had yet to make it his own.

Yes, of all that have covered Jerry Jeff's song, this is right up there. The music and the video.
