  • Super dooper

  • This is amazing! I love it! ♥

  • I´d never understand how a man could dance and move the way he did. That was absolute fantastic, elegante, unbelievable! And he was a funny man, with a very nice singing-voice, too. I watched the movies in tv with my parents when I was a Kid. Thanks for the video...

  • I wish to be courted by a man of his eloquence... Too bad they've all died out :/

  • I love Hugh's version too!

  • 144 people aren't stylish enough and never will be able to be Puttin on the Ritz

  • this is what im doing for my talent show

  • I love it when you can't really see the dislike bar.

  • 144 people are idiots

  • 144 people dont know what a cane is...

  • Unbelievable! Perfect timing on every move. Very tight. His feet hit the floor exactly on the beat. You don't see dancing like that anymore. Perfect 10! Forget that Dancing With the Stars junk.

  • The second time the camera follows him to the right after he stamps the cane on the ground. While he is to the right and the cane is off camera, a technician moves it over the hole where the jet of air sends it back up into his hand.

  • Actually, it is explained in the book Astaire Dancing...it is a jet of air that springs it up into his hand. The first time he kicks the cane away, you will notice that you hear a sound as it hits the wall stage right. He then comes towards the camera and picks up a cane that is previously placed there off camera while he is dancing (continued on next post).

  • He could give Yoda a run for his money.

  • I'll be damned if anyone can tap-dance better than him

  • there is no longer any Fred Astair .. I miss him

  • Perfekcyjny przykład stopniowania wizualnego ! Zainteresowanym polecam także postać Busty Berkeley-a.

  • And after seeing this scene, Fred Astaire's children never misbehaved again.

  • Jedi much? O.o

  • i was born in the wrong generation

  • @Tendurs . SORRY that is MY speech !!!!! lol i m with you :)

  • irving berlin must have been over the moon when he saw this version

  • Takes me back to my childhood on Sunday afternoons watching films like these when TV was in Black and White and we only had one channel, yet we were truly entertained as it was a very innocent and less demanding time when TV truly entertained.

  • HOW DID HE CONTINUE TO PICK UP HIS CANE?!!

  • @bunkerbike The cane trick really isn't that hard to figure out, if you just stop and think about it for a minute. Basically the canes (yes, plural) are rigged with wires that easily snap off. As he "picks up" the cane it is pulled up by the wires/strings and are snapped off by him grabbing the cane. You'll notice that everytime this trick is done the cane is either off-screen for a short while or there is a cut. The non-rigged cane is here replaced with a rigge one.

  • @GuardMarcellus Actually, if you'll watch closely, there's a little peg that pops up out of the floor under the cane. It's being launched, not pulled.

  • @oggggo Very astute! That certainly seems to be the case.

  • @GuardMarcellus Wasn't so much astuteness as wondering how he did it and rewinding several times.

  • They dance like Trolldad!

  • now that was entertainment in the day when people of all over had class..no matter where you came from or what you did

  • Whenever I find a long umbrella I feel like Fred Astaire and dancing with it as a cane to this song.

  • swag nuff said

  • Comment removed

  • wtf did anyone else see that at 2:59

  • Fred Astaire was a famous dolphin right?

  • Pure class

  • Seems like the entertainment quality was way better back in the days.

I have a theory that it has something to do with supply and demand. Back then it was hard to become visible so those who made it had to give their all. Nowadays there are so many scenes and media that you can find an audience no matter how mediocre your talent. Some idiot is bound to like you even if you do nothing but slur and jiggle your manboobs. (no offence to people with manboobs, of course)

  • @aryllia entertainment wasn't better. But all the shit produced in those days is now forgotten and only the best remains.

  • @aryllia After reading that, it's really sad to see the Fred channel in the recommended videos on the right.

  • @aryllia Your exactley right. It seems entertainment in those days was much better. He certainty had many different talents.I absoultley love the way he tap dances!l

  • @aryllia Hey, lowbrow stupidity has always been a hallmark of comedy. There was a song in 1939 called "Hitler Has Only Got One Ball"!

  • @aryllia Hey, lowbrow stupidity has always been a hallmark of comedy. There was a song in 1939 called "H*tl*r Has Only Got One Ball". (I think YouTube isn't letting me post this comment without censoring it!)

  • @aryllia

    Great Job!

  • @aryllia

this certainly would explain the success of 'The black eyed pee pees' and such.

  • PUIINION ON DA REEZ!!!

  • i used to dance like that... but then i got fat

  • 2:55 how the hell did he do???

  • Now compare this with fifty cent.

  • They tried to bring top hats back into style along with tailcoats, batwing collars, etc. in the mid thirties. Fred and Ginger made a movie in 1937 with Fred going about in that attire. It fizzled. Sure, it looks good, but in this day and age, A. there is no elegance only glitz, and B. People prefer being comfortable in slob clothes to dressing up.

  • This video contains capitalism...

  • this is one take... WOW

  • estos es una coreografìa de verdad

  • and he does all tht then goes to his lady and says wait for him when hes done performing .........LIKE A BOOOOOSSSS

  • Perfection.

I wonder how many takes were necessary.

And how does he DO THAT with his cane?

  • @aquariana216 It was known that Fred was a one take sort of guy (unless others were involved), however he would pratice the hell out of it before he'd come in.

  • @aquariana216 He's Fred Astaire. His Powers of Win allow him to do it. He's the stylish equivalent of Chuck Norris in that just being HIM is enough to do incredible things.

  • How could anyone dislike this?

  • 141 people aren't puttin' on the ritz

  • thumbs up if you watching in 2012

  • @KostaKostaki Thumbed down.

  • If zombies attacked and he had his cane there would be no zombies left. how does he do that O_o

  • Absolutely mesmerizing; I didnt want to blink in case I missed a nanosecond of this amazing piece of art in action. Truly remarkable. There will never be anyone like Fred Astaire ever again; people like him happen once in a lifetime; same as Nureyev, Leonardo Da Vinci, and other truly wonderful artists.

  • My nana of 90 told me about this man.

This is the reason Youtube exists.

  • 2:57

    Me: O_O

  • Happy Feet my ass!! this is dancing!!!

  • I fail to understand why men stop wearing spats, they have such a classic and sophisticated look

  • Why must I constantly fall in love with actors (like Fred Astaire, Gregory Peck and Frank 'Ol Blue Eyes' Sinatara) that are either dead, very old or dying?

  • @TheUltimateUnderdog1 Oedipus complex?^^ - no, i understand what you r trying to say ;)

  • the man who invented swag

  • 子供にタップを見せようと探した。カラーがあるとは思わなかったが、戦後ならあって当然か。

  • Man i love this!

  • Before auto-tune and flashy lights and complex digitized editing there was a funny thing that kept the music industry alive, it was called skill. You had to have a voice and decent looks, obvious insane abilities as a dance and general entertainer. Coordination and physical endurance were also demanded.

Also press 6 for badass cane kick.

  • If anyone has seen better dancing than displayed on this video, please post it, because I haven't.

  • 141 people will burn in the damn fiery depths of Hell for disliking this. God fucking hates you, so die

  • fuck moving like jagger, i wanna move like astaire, i wanna move like kelly

  • just watch his feet! if the director could have zoomed in more on that perspsective

  • can someone explain the 3:11 part?

  • Comment removed

  • I still fail to understand why people have stopped wearing top hats...

  • @uUUu314 Actually.. I've seen a person wear one a few days ago at McDonald's :)

  • @uUUu314 i wear a top hat everyday

  • @uUUu314 I own one, I might start wearing it all the time. Lets get the trend going again!

  • @uUUu314 Old Abe Linclon kept his office in his top hat (pens, papers, reports, books etc), sort of a 1860's style of IPad LOL.

  • @uUUu314 I think its widely assumed that the trend died out when John F. Kennedy did not wear one to his inauguration.

  • @uUUu314 *hug*

  • @uUUu314 Because bowler hats are cheaper! (Actually, the top hats are one of the many, MANY reasons I love steampunk so very much!)

  • @uUUu314

Trust me, if I could find a decent top hat (as opposed to a ridiculous novelty hat) that could actually fit my giant head, I'd do whatever I can to bring them back. *lol*

  • @uUUu314 they dont have class anymore....it's a shame really. top hats are classy

  • @uUUu314 Because they were uncomfortable and impractical.

  • @ScarletHarlotry Sometimes you sacrifice comfort and pragmatism for pure awesomeness.

  • @uUUu314 Because theyre not worthy...

  • @uUUu314 Because gentlemen went extinct.

  • @uUUu314

For the exact same reason we glorify the Hip-Hop culture.

  • @uUUu314 And white spats, too.

  • It really says something about where our culture's gone. No smoke machines, back-up singers/dancers, no fancy edits or music video set-up. Just a guy with lots of talent, blowing away any boy band, Justin Beiber, or Ke$ha out there.

  • Absolute brilliance. I bet if you cut Fred Astaire he'd bleed pure class.

  • What the fuck...? Is that and adamantium cane?!

  • Awesome hes not still alive. Is he?

  • @singingbirds98

Believe it or not he was born in 1899. Died 1987 aged 88.

  • @patrickcorliss Fred Astaire, Y U NO freeze yourself like Walt Disney!? ლ(ಠ益ಠლ)

  • the timing is perfect all the way through

  • OK the cane popping thing???? any ideas. i thought i saw a little post shoot out of the floor on the first one.

  • poor cane.

  • His dances are so gay and when people watch him dance, they too become gay. (and for people who don't know, 'gay' used to mean happy and cheerful)

  • @halfgoodhalfevil its because this was way back 1940's....even michael jackson said he is one of his influences in dancing....

  • Chuck Norris does not have anything on this guy.

  • @Bayplaces this is chuck norris wen he shaved using a band saw and putting a top hat on =)

  • this is a privilege,to watch Fred Astaire performs.

  • 140 people Don't appreciate talent

  • Fred Astaire=CLASS AND A LEGEND!

  • Use the force Fred! ..on the cain I mean lol

  • FRED - YOU DO IT FOR ME EVERY TIME... WOW !!

    Thank you......

  • Anyone know how he does the cane thing?

  • @ThatDereKid Only Fred can use the force

  • Dance like that for 5 minutes a day and you can skip the workout at the gym.

  • that cane is having the time of it's life.

  • its funny how fame is today. people like this with 29 boat loads of talent are not even close to being famous as like ke$ha and lady gaga who cannot writer there own music, cannot dance, and cannot perform without the help of computers.

  • Brilliant!

  • Such a classic!

  • wow!. . its soooooo great!!!!. . its sooooo cooool!!!. .even if i'm not born in that day. .i think fred astaire is now my grandpa. .he's my idol. .wew!. . ^_^. . i hope i can see fred astaire in personal. .

  • he was handsome my oh my

  • How does he make the cane fly back into his hand? O.o

  • Such talent in America, 65 years ago...

    What the hell happened?!

  • His timing, rhythm and syncopation are the best I've ever seen of a tap dancer. He sure was talented!

  • der mr.rits i love your song and may you live long

  • This is incredible. You don't see talent like this very often today. Prop manipulation has been relegated to the circus and fringe communities.

  • mesmerizing! had to remind myself to breathe again after 4:33

  • he is just simply memorizing..

  • Just a second, straight men CAN dance? The gay community has been holding me back!!! Lol.

On the other hand, It would have been awesome to meet this Titan of cinema.

These days we have to deal with Selena Gomez and Ashton Kutcher.

  • For some reason, all I can think about is how good he would be at DDR. I'm really sorry.

  • @Goronian Whats DDR?

  • why do americans always say "america would be a better place" instead of "the world would be a better place" ?? Don´t you care about the rest?

  • @condjei because we're a bunch of egoistical jerks.

  • @condjei No we do not

  • All Class =)... Perfection =)

  • not only does he KILL this

but he does so with such grave, suave, and class.

    god bless you Mr. Astaire

you've reminded me that real dance can be at your potential

  • You know what is the most impressive and also most overlooked fact in this scene?... It doesn't have edits every 20 seconds. He did this in one go.

  • @IctivGoka not complete true ;) he was a very good actor and exceptionally gifted dancer & singer, but they cutted some parts too in "puttin' on the ritz" - examples: 1:21 and even a trick-cutting at 2:57

anyways besides that: GRANDIOUS dancing - i love it

  • goddamn sick moves!

  • Fred > Chuck Norris

  • he had really long arms

  • swaaaaag

  • Drum fill at 2:17. Sick.

  • This song should've been in Fallout 3.

  • have u noticed 3.02 till 3.07

  • fred or gene

  • @mrmagicroundcircle fred, yet both are amazing.

  • @hardmember gene kelly looks stronger and more athletic . fred maybe more finnesse

  • I wished this was still popular too. I can't take my eyes off their feet. WHAT TALENT!

  • Singer...Dancer...Jedi

  • Only Fred Astaire can keep up with Fred Astaire

  • This is my favorite and I think Astaire's best (but I haven't seen his all his early stuff)

The build in complexity. The cane usage to simple to impossible. The camera tricks that would be explained away today as cgi. The use of his dance as lyrics. No one else could do this with the combo of theatre and film production canny like Astaire.

  • Why is this so immensely entertaining? I can't help but smile.

  • Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you, the definition, and inventor, of swag.

  • @1D0M47H1NP3N Kudos

  • THIS IS SWAG

  • Comment removed

  • 2:56 What did he just do and... how

  • swag

  • I want to get this outfit for homecoming

  • That poor cane..

  • The 139 people that disliked this are just upset that the amazingly gifted and talented fred astaire is gone... At least we have so many amazing songs and musicals to watch of him that he did throughout his life to remember the great performer :D

  • Why can't we have performers with this kind of class anymore?

  • class

  • 'ol Fred was the best. Probably even looked good brushing his teeth in the morning.

  • he looks like bugs bunny :)) . and moves like him

  • What happend to people dressing like this??? That one man has more style than a whole generation of these kids.

  • Greatest feet on Earth!

  • So masterful..

  • This is a class act that no one else can replicate. I've watched this clip many times over the year's and I never tire of it.

  • 2:57 Harry Potter?
