The commercial just confirms that the iPad is annihilating Kindle in sales. It's also a faulty comparison. The Kindle is a cheap plastic black and white book reader where the iPad is a multimedia, gaming, and internet device, and also a book reader.

Does the Kindle display photos? So many books have photo sections (or photos dispersed throughout the book) - and I'm wondering if a Kindle has the capability to display these photos. Is this one of the drawbacks of a Kindle (no photo viewing)?

@svetaswan I don't have a Kindle, but I do have a Sony Ereader and it does support pictures. The display is black and white though. I expect you'll see black and white photos on the kindle too.

@BaddeJimme - thanks. I really do want/need a Kindle, but I imagine that there will be times when I want to view photos in all of their colorific glory. I guess it would be nice if the Kindle folks allowed Kindle patrons to download to their computer the color-photos of the books they purchase.

(I wouldn't necessarily want them to upgrade the Kindle to support color photos because it may take away from the unobtrusive, glare-free qualities of the screen.)

Lame. I'm well impressed by the Kindle and won't be buying an iPad. However, the advert really is shite. If I bought either and took it on holiday, the last thing I'd be doing is reading it while getting a suntan ... sorry, suntanners annoy the hell out of me. The Kindle is great for reading e-books, anywhere, anytime. The iPad is great for umm.... doing everything my iPod Touch does....only that it's harder to carry around on account of it's bigger size...

The kindle can connect to the web. It's limited to greyscale though, and you can't watch anything at any reasonable framerate. The iPad and kindle are entirely different...

One thing is wrong here - if he's outside at the pool, he'll be wearing sunglasses. And if he's rich enough to own an iPad, they will be polarized sunglasses. He can then just turn the iPad horizontally, into landscape mode. Problem solved! He can now enjoy books, the web, App Store apps, and every other thing the iPad can do that the unfortunate little Kindle cannot.

No one is saying the Kindle isn't a good "book reader"...That is it, what people should stop dong is comparing it to the iPad. It is not the same device. So saying the Kindle is better really isn't saying anything. The iPad IS NOT A BOOK READER!!! It is a multi functioning device that allows you to read books on it. Can use apps on the Kindle? Can you want Netflix streamed on the Kindle? Can you listen to your music, read your emails, go on Youtube, watch ABC, Showtime, HBO on the Kindle? So, l

True, the AluraTek would be something to talk about.

It only has a 24hr worth of charge, compared to the Kindle and many other eBook readers.

The Kindle should focus more on competitor specs.
