Must admit I didnt know the singer,wasn't even sure if the voice was male or female.Had to google.Quite surprised he was into pop and punk,as this sounds very tradtional.I quite like it, although mostly I prefer less rough voices,but he is doing the song right.Most probably this is the way it should be sang.I once heard an equally impressive version by the late Irish singer Moira Briody,(almost or)a capella.Thats still my favourite version,but I have found a very interesting version here,thanks

@jcriedijk Hej, thanks for the comment! Actually that's how I first got know him, I was listening to a late night BBC (over the internet) music program and it played a song called Teenage Kick by a punk band called Undertones, from the late 70's. And it so happened that after some reading online I found out he sang a version of one of my favourite Irish folk songs. I guess I like this version because it gives me and image of a vast moor.
