When I arrived from The land of South Slavs to The land of South Seas on the 23rd of August 1973 this was very first song that I heard on the 3XY Radio...I do not know why, but I still love it...
Awesome! I remember seeing Ross live at the Adelaide Festival Centre when he supported Dr Hook! He 'chastised' the lighting guy for doing what Ross called 'a professional blackout' after his first song! :-)
I don’t know why, but I love this song. I was 25 when arrived to Australia in August 1973, following year this was a hit song...Thanks RR...this is beautiful!
Milson's Point Hotel in Sydney I think it was (about 1978) .... was packed out for three streets back with people watching him. You want a beer - better go to the bottle shop up the road coz there's no way to get to the bar!! What a star!
I heard this on the radio on my way home today and I have not heard it since I was a boy 30 years ago driving in the car with my old man , and it is an Australian song , amazing ..., Check out if you want to see Australian. Marty
I lived in Oz from 1971 until 2001 and those early years had some of the best aussie music ever. It was awesome. Cant understand why a lot of it never made it in the UK.
damm what a blast, whats happened to music today,,YEEKS!!! ross ryan,s music was played at every party saturday nights back then,he was cool!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dont understand why Australia allowed itself to be colonised by the rubbish that makes its culture unidentifiable from the rest of the media garbage. It used to be truly unique. Loved it then. Cant say I do now.
Have been meaning for some time to thank you for posting this - I have very few video momentoes from the 70s. Have taken the luxury of linking to this from my own site. Have also enjoyed much of your collection. You have an impressive stash :-) Also chuffed by the comments below - good and bad.
@rossperson I bought this album when it came out and, reluctantly, gave it to a South African friend who just wouldn't stop playing it. My favorite track was Blue Chevrolet Ballerina. All the best and thanks for a great album.
An Aussie friend turned me onto Ross in college and made copies of his stuff on cassettes which have unfortunately died. Amazed he's on youtube since Amazon has not heard of him My favorite song isn't here and that is IT is Over. Could some nice person from down under upload it? Please.
I saw Ross Ryan perform this in 1974, in the grounds of Sydney Uni. He performed with ACDC and a few others. Best act. Long time ago, but i won't ever forget it!!
well thats the crux - he is and he isn´t , just as we are and we arnet the same as when we then loved the song.... life goes on and music is a bridge.....
I never did, long live real music while the rubbish decays after a few years the real good music still shines on and always will just waiting to be rediscovered.
An all time Aussie Classic.I have it on a vinyl album "Explosive Hits 1974".This song is my anthem, and always lifts me up when things seem to get me down.Thank You Ross Ryan.
This song is for me a positive energy equivalent to Leonard Cohen´s Susanne, to Stirway to heaven and a handful of songs whose texts since early childhood have remained an enigma, and have remained rivetting... Saw him in Townsville in the 80´s and I´m very pleased to read here that he´s still making music...
I remember Ross from ASHS, where he was well into his music.
I can't say I knew him - I was only on lower school & he was in 5th year. I'm kicking myself for losing the Boronia magazine with a photo of him in a lead part of the play of that year. I managed to be an usherette, which for a shy person was a great achievement. It also had his autograph in it and that was just as important! Great to see he turned his much loved music into a career. AND "I AM PEGASUS" is still a favourite!
Ross Ryan was from my town Albany, he came back in 1977 and performed during the 150 centenary celebrations. The strange thing is I never really was mad about him but I went on to name my kids Ross and Ryan and did not even think about that until someone mentioned his name and if I had named my kids because of him, I did not, there was not thought of Ross Ryan at the time LOL. However I loved the music of that time and remember all the aussie bands of the time and how much fun we had
I saw him at Adelaide uni bar in the early 80's on a weeknight. It was a brilliant intimate gig which still stands as one of my favourite evenings out. He was not just a great singer/songwriter but a riveting storyteller in between the songs.
I remember seeing Ross Ryan perform this in 1975 at Syd Uni grounds. It was a free 2SM concert. I hitched in from Blacktown to see him! Ahhh ... memories :)
I have no choice but to remind you that in this day and age you need to have a bloody university degree just to work in a wrecking yard (no offence to fellow dismantlers out there).
there were unemployment problems in the 70s. I lined up for hours for a factory job. As for the qualifications, rubbish. My son got a job as a courier and makes 50 grand a year at the age of 18, all his mates are working as well. very few went to uni
well said love, im with you here, i to got a job straight up in 1976 and the old man made sure,, no issue,s no problems, and yes no Bullshit Uni degree, god this song still rings out as it did back then, they just dont cut it these days, god i miss those days and stright up true comments like this, refreshing thats for sure, id go back to those days anytime, thanks juleigh1959
Re: the dispute below, EVERY generation screws something up, be it the environment, the social scene, whatever. All you can hope is that your generation can add something beneficial. Perhaps some benefits from the generation are environmental awareness (the problems are of very long standing); the spread of democracy across the world (remembering that it can take several generations to get a firm hold); the improvement in race relations; and avoiding World War 3.
As I recall it, Ross Ryan wrote this song because he was unhappy about what he thought was the general meaninglessness of pop music at the time, and wanted to do something not just totally meaningless, but on a much higher plane of meaninglessness! That's why your Mum was confused: she was normal! The house load of teenagers were simply bypassing the meaning in the lyrics, as usual, so the meaninglessness missed them. I recall Ross was a bit disappointed that it went over so well!
I MISSED this song. I knew it was called I am Pegasus... I couldn't find it anywhere. I was lucky enough to see Ross Ryan playing at a little club in Adelaide, many years ago. I only went to the club, so I could hear this song, sung by Ross. I still remember it clearly. Thanks for posting it. It's in my faves of course.
eyewrenchee ... your p....d off because the 60s took alot of people away from the catholic church. The best thing that has ever happened. My mind if free from religion, and I give my sincere thanks to 60s generation.
Go away and learn to spell first, then come back and write something, you illiterate jerk.
Looks like you really are an just another jerk baby boomer get of the stage your 15 minutes of glory is up, and by the way I am not an catholic, u dick.
Y do u feel the need to keep informing me of the great day that you r having? Is it because if you keep saying it to yourself it will become an reality?
I just said that it was time for Baby Boomer's to get off the world stage that their generation HAS DESTROYED THE WORLD, and that there 15 Minutes of fame was UP and that they should all PISS OFF NOW.
I'm sure those Palestinians in Gaza are having a great day, bet you those Zimbabweans have are having a great day also bet those Sudanese in Darfur are having a great big whopping happy day, what the hell are you going on about valakin bet your a rich middle class westerner living it up in some western country yeah bet your having great happy days.
I just said that it was time for Baby Boomer's (LIKE your sELF) to get off the world stage that YOUR generation HAD DESTROYED THE WORLD, and that YOUR 15 Minutes of fame was UP and that YOU should pISS OFF NOW.
gen x huh...as i recall in the 70's you didn't have to go through so many courses to get your qualifications just to get bloody job! It is now 2009 and I had to go through two courses just to legally work as a bartender and three courses just to work as a bouncer.
So before you smugly down at your inferiors, I have no choice but to remind you that in this day and age you need to have a bloody university degree just to work in a wrecking yard (no offence to fellow dismantlers out there).
Thanks for this. Like AshskiNO, I was 9 and had Explosive Hits 74, and got Bobby Dazzler in 75! Now I live in California and love the memories I find on YOU TUBE.
Hmmmm... the main reason why not many people realise that there was such a diverse music scene in OZ/NZ was because the world ignored what we had to ofter at the time. One nice UK music writer once deemed the Birthday Party as the only Australian band worth listening to... that was at the time of The Go-Betweens, Triffids, Saints, Laughing Clowns, Riptides, Paul Kelly, Midnight Oil, Radio Birdman, etc. My nzoz accounts are based on Australian music between the years 1974 to 1989.
Unfortunatley I don't think things have changed much. There's still a lot of great Aussie music. eg. Powderfinger, Living End, etc that goes pretty much unnoticed by the rest of the world. Yet they know Kylie.
They (the world) choose Kylie because he is easy to consume. It makes me cringe when we stand accused of contributing nothing to the world but the precious few they've accepted from us.
It's like somebody taking one out of a million items from your treasure chest and then turning to you and asking 'is that all you got?'.
Ross is an amazing performer. All his songs were truly fantastic. From "The one baout the horse" as he called it thru to Blue Chevrolet Ballerina...even the Many Peaks song. Ross is still performing aorund Melbourne's Mornington Penisula. You can find his website on Google. I think its Coathanger Productions
The memories come flooding back!!! I was 7 years old when this came out - it still sounds as good as ever!! Thanks for the trip down memory lane!! I have been looking for this song everywhere - hard to find in record stores these days!!! At least here I've got bonus video as well!!
this was on the first compilation album I bought..."explosive hits 74"...ahh takes me back...gotta love the 70's! everything was so much simpler and "cool" without pretensions
I saw Ross Ryan perform this in a small concert at a school hall, we were all sitting on the floor and he just had a guitar, it was so damn Awesome!!!!
Theres too many to name, though whats been mentioned is pretty good.I know that Chain had many great rock/blues songs as well as Matt Taylor.I really was glad to see Golden miles here on youtube.
This for me is an ultimate song of the 70s.A high point, along with Billy thorpe music, the Chain songs & Golden miles & poem of joy from Healing force. Also a recent find.Great Australian rock/pop/blues music.
I thought that was 'country Christine', I forget which album that was on. My favourite song of his was called 'Worth my while'but I've not heard it in a very long time.
When I arrived from The land of South Slavs to The land of South Seas on the 23rd of August 1973 this was very first song that I heard on the 3XY Radio...I do not know why, but I still love it...

Who said anything about CATHOLICS? I didn't.
I just said that it was time for Baby Boomer's (LIKE your sELF) to get off the world stage that YOUR generation HAD DESTROYED THE WORLD, and that YOUR 15 Minutes of fame was UP and that YOU should pISS OFF NOW.

Excuse you!....I am gen x.
Gen y, your going to know what a recession feels like. It has begun.:-)
I will sit back in my apartment (I fully own) and watch you people and your lives fall apart.
I worked hard for eveything I have, now you will have to.
MRMILO57 3 years ago
gen x huh...as i recall in the 70's you didn't have to go through so many courses to get your qualifications just to get bloody job!

I never realised there was such a diverse music scene in australia/New Zealand all these years. thankyou YouTube and thanks Garyco and sunsets
timnlol 3 years ago
Hmmmm... the main reason why not many people realise that there was such a diverse music scene in OZ/NZ was because the world ignored what we had to ofter at the time.

Yet they know Kylie.
billsaintkilda 3 years ago
They (the world) choose Kylie because he is easy to consume. It makes me cringe when we stand accused of contributing nothing to the world but the precious few they've accepted from us.
It's like somebody taking one out of a million items from your treasure chest and then turning to you and asking 'is that all you got?'.
nzoz1974 3 years ago
Absolutely right. I'm living in the UK right now and I've done my bit to introduce them to some real Aussie music.

@nzoz1974 I'll take KYLIE and all she's got any day! and squeeze that budgie drier than a chip! munchie munchie slurp ;p

Yes, I remember reading one of those English music mags, maybe Melody Maker?
Their record review was typical of them for those days, Aussie bashing and really panning Men At Work 's album.
They had to eat their words when later it went to No1 in the US and the UK.

Ross Ryan, Doug Ashdown, The Dingoes,Russell Morris, Brian Cadd, Daddy Cool,Johnny O'Keefe, Billy Thorpe etc etc, as diverse as our marsupials!
