a thing that massive would require quite a bit of wind to get it moving along. obviously there isn't much of a breeze as you can see the puddle of water in the foreground is as still as ice. and if you look carefully, there's actually at least one person behind this contraption who is pushing it forward (0:14).
Have you watched the video the creator of this made? He's claiming they are a lifeform and wants to see herds of them wandering shorelines...Seriously, he thinks they are alive because they move...
Well... The title "ART APPARENTLY" says it all... It doesn't need to be a tad more productive. It's just as it is. At least it's still a quality craft.
This is more of a moving piece of cardboard art and NOT some kind of wind powered robot. At most the wind may be helping to get a some forward motion.
@stonedozerband There wasn't any wind that day so they had to. But under normal circumstances they're wind powered. Usually walking across windy beaches.
It's not stop animation. If you look carefully you can see a man pushing it. Go to Ted-dot-com and search for Theo Jansen. Many work on wind power. It is not stop animation.
1- flickering water caused by video compression. 2-Theo jansen.. I don't think its cardboard, and it's meant to crawl across beaches. Besides, this is not a wind powered model and you can clearly see a dude pushing it toward the end..
theo jansens kinetic machines work with wind. they propel the 'monster' and most of the time he tests them on beaches. he's dutch and does this kind of thing for the last 25 years.
It's a giant fucking crab thingie! Let's bring it to japan, paint it green, and unleash it on tokyo! Run for you rives! Is not Godzirra but still giant crab thing!
If you look at the way it moves, maybe has a small battery to keep a few legs moving, the rest move off of the others, when one retracts, if pushes the other out
Why is it any less impressive if it is aided by people?
I find the leg mechanics to be brilliant. And do take notice this is art. Since when was art very practical for real life use, especialy kinetic sculptures? Especially in its own category, this is bloody fantastic, I generally don't like kinetic sculptures one itty bit.
yes you have done oyu research but he hopes that his creatures will be able to roam without human assistance and are powered off solar energy cant swim and walk in wet sand only
you want an explanation? i think it is pretty obvious that this thing is not motorized, so it takes the power of two guys to push it. the system itself is pretty amazing, despite the fact that this thing probably has no practical real world use, it is still amazing.
this is a piece of work by Theo Jansen, a netherlands based artist. look up his Strandbeechen (sp) series which are like this one only wind powered and made from yellow tubes. He's a genius in engineering.

wind propelled? hardly!

2) Who the hell has money to build a giant cardboard robot that can crawl across parking lots?

The sculpture is by the Kinetic Sculptor / artist : Theo Jansen. Powered by wind with human assitance to steer.
Theo Jansen (born March 17, 1948, in The Hague, Netherlands.)
Search youtube : kinetic sculpture, you will see more his works.
He is truely a genius.
Scientists are studing his kinetic sculptures.
One day, you will see kineticmobils, kineticopters in your everyday living.
He is beyond this era.
