A lot of this film is actually based on fact. The bit where he gets stuck on a steeple happened to a soldier, John Steele or something. And when the british para lands in someones backgarden
The British were a bunch of asses!!!. The 82nd Airborne was and is one of the finest units ever created!. You must be a Brit . Then Montgomery screwed up with Operation Market Garden when it fell on its face because it was under Brit Command.. The british were too busy drinking tea while the 82nd Airborne and 101st Airborne were taking there objectives and liberating Eindohoven. You are a real piece of work. If your an American you should be ashamed of yourself. Maybe your a communist.
@sparkyspiers As a para, i should remind you that the 82nd adopted a lot of its ideas and skills from the British Airborne forces, including the Red Beret, also the Rangers in ww2 were trained by British Commandos.
As for Market Garden i suggest you find out the truth before you write such crap. As for drinking tea bollocks they were too busy fightng and dying against panzer and panzer grenadier forces, no time for tea,
Monty was not at fault either, bad weather, outnumbered,
@carroj9 The Americans screwed up badly during Operation Queen & the Hurtgen offensive too. Market Garden was not the worst by any means & the battle of Scheldt should have taken more priority
The allies had their faults and far too ego headed to think that the war would be over by Christmas.
All the allied soldiers obviously deserv'e the deepest respect for their courageous sacrifice and all what they did on the early moments of the invasion .Actually, the D-day itself was not as bad on the landing beaches and drop zones as the three complete following months of pure hell they all had to live, traped in the hedgerows of Normandy that is like a deep jungle where were hiding snipers The german soldiers were much more experienced in fighting after 5 long years of war there in Europe.
All the allied soldiers obviously deserv'e the deepest respect for their courageous sacrifice and all what they did on the early moments of the invasion .Actually, the D-day itself was not as bad on the landing beaches and drop zones as the tree complete following months of pure hell they all had to live, traped in the hedgerows of Normandy that is like a deep jungle where were hiding snipers The german soldiers were much more experienced in fighting after 5 long years of war there in Europe.
One of the biggest inaccuracies in this clip is the troopers spraying the ground with automatic weapons fire. These small arms were secured in padded weapons cases and under the parachute harnesses. They were totally vulnerable during the descent.
That guy on the tower actually survives. He's shown in the end with john wayne helping him down after omaha. That soldier was based on the true story of Roger Morris
@googpower@billace90 this is based on John Steele, Mortar Section, 2nd Platoon, F co. 505th PIR. There was another trooper , Ken Russel, who was snagged on the opposite side of the Steeple but who was able to cut himself down.
This was a true story during the war when they came in over St.Mere Eglise. Heartbreaking. I think the music was just fine. Man, so many famous, and good male actors that were in this movie!! The days when actors knew how to act.
i went to st. mere eglise earlier this summer and not only saw the church but i also went inside it as well. there were a few bullet holes from the time that are still there, it was an amazing experience being there
Unfortunately by putting in the music you have eliminated a crucial part of the scene, the ringing of the church bells. Not all movie scenes need dramatic music. The church bells ringing thoughout the scene makes the scene more intense and powerful than the music.
@larrylemson yes i understand but i made this to practice some of my editing skills but i recomend just renting or buying the dvd rather than watch it on youtube
where saving private ryan was graphic and authentic in its revisioning of the normandy invasions, The Longest Day has all the elements of an extraordinary tribute to the men who fought and died on that day from both sides whether they were american, british, or german. GREAT MOVIE
This is an re-enactment of the true story of Pvt. John Steele whose parachute got caught in the church steeple at St. Mere Eglise. Red Buttons plays Pvt. Steele.
Russell could see paratroopers landing all over the square including his buddy Sgt. John Ray who landed near the church. As soon as Ray landed a German shot him in the chest. The German then turned and aimed at Russell and Steele who were still hanging on the church.
Ray who hadn't been killed by the German could see what was going to happen and pulled out his .45 pistol and killed the German, saving his friends before he died of his wounds.
But apart from Vietnam. We've more or less followed them anywhere and support them on anything. Slag the Brits off if you want. But for a small island, that ruled most of worlds land surface and all the seas, and colonised the Americas. Thats not really bad going. Never underestimate the British!!!
who lost just after the americans made the 13 colonies because he wasnt happy about it?? hmmm the british!!!! that made the Revolutionary from 1775 to 1783 abd the british never have messed with us yankees again.
the turning point in the western campaign was when the British defeated Rommels "invincible" corps.
And it was the British, make no doubt about it. The US got hammered in North Africa as they were very inexperienced bjt they learnt alot of lessons there.
But, i'm not gonna deny the fact that UK were weeks away from starvation and without the help of the US we prob would have lost.
The US have refused to aid us in Malaya, Suez, Radfan, Palestine, Falklands since WWII.
I love this movie, despite it being black and white, I think its probably equal with Saving Private Ryan because of the awesome night scenes. The Longest Day is a great movie!
Will everyone stop arguing which country was better? It was a joint effort, none of us would have succeded in the war without each others help! When we(I say this from american P.O.V)joined the war in the Pacific, we wouldn't have succeded without the Australians there helping us,and we wouldn't have succeded in Europe without the British/canadians helping!
@Legoppl or the Norwegians who prevented a german atom bomb, or the free french, belgians, dutch, irish, scots, africans indians brazilians new zealanders , south africans rhodesians and many others
that guys a dork he tried to cut his shroud lines with his m3 loses it and just sits there like duh I don't think he remembered he was issued a m2 switch blade that could have gotten him out of his chute harness but no what an idiot
It would be because the war was progressing at such a slow rate compared to 1941-1945. And I should be asking you that question since America has helped your country out of the msot awkward situations, usually when the nazi flag is about to be planted in your "arse".
It is easy to sit back and watch all the other nations fight and weaken before joining in, so before you portray yourselves as some kind of knight in shining armour remember you were forced to join in - at Pearl Harbour so you declare war on Japan (not Germany) then Hitler declared war on you...so you joined that fight as well...
Lol what weakening did you do? Most of Europe was still controlled by the nazis and fighting the Japanese was no small accomplishment. To say that the axis was considerably weakened before America joined in 1941 would be a bold faced lie and possibly a show of ignorance.
Let me just throw this out there for you neo nazis that think it took the "entire world" to beat your country in World War2. Nazi Germany had allies namely Japan and Some of Italy. The unted States not only fought the germans with limited help from the british but took on the Japs by themselves (except for the chain of islands where the australians helped). As for the Russians, they took you on one front without any allied help. If anything it only took 2 nations to beat you. Wise the fuck up.
'limited help from the British' wtf!!! we had been fighting the Germans for nearly 2 years before the US entered the war, and despite certain Hollywood movies at both the landings in Italy and D-Day more than half the troops were British!! plus we were also fighting the Japs in the Burma Campaign! yes in 1945 the British effort wained, but I would hardly describe British support as limited!!!
Limited help from the British. Yes. and you just pointed it out. The americans fought the Japs for the entire war. the british only participated in one campaign. Now if you can give me 5 examples in which the british actually fought the germans before 1941 then i can see your point. Bombings do not count either. They were not battles (except for the Battle of britain which I know you will use)
Yes I will use the Battle of Britain as it was arguably one of the most important battles of WW2, the Norway Campaign, the Battle of France, the campaign in Greece(although British troops may not have become involved till 1941) and in Egypt late 1940. I am not debating that we could not have won the war without the aid of America prior to 1941 and after, but to say that Britain only offered limited help I think is unfounded.
@tyrannasaurasalan I suggest you read more history, the Royal Navy fought from 1939 against german forces, and enemies allied ti the germans. Battles in France, Belgium, Norway, Lofoten Islands, commando raids, small scale airborne attacks (battles) and many more.
@carroj9 A lot of help that did against japan......and by that I mean it did absolutely nothing. Whoever I was responding to never gave those examples either, i'm afraid.
ooo thats touchy ground ... many other countries including my own, canada made important contributions to the war effort, its wrong to forget the contribution of the commonwealth countries, the free french, Indians in the Burma campaign, China and many others in fighting germany and the other axis powers
China did not fight in germany. They acted as spies and sometimes on rare occasion allies in battle for the Americans in the pacific. The free french could not even free their own capitol even though they outnumbered the nazis stationed there. Canada I'll give to you because it was the most minor out of the main fighting forces in the war. You make it seem like every single country fought in Europe. You are so mistaken.
you wise the fuck up, it took the coordinated efforts of many countries to beat the germans and disregard the sacrfice and contribution of even the littlest country smacks of arrogance. everyone who could pitched in and that should never be forgotten, as iraq has shown, its easy or cheap to do things alone or with minimal support in the modern world and the second you disregard your allies in any war its going to make it much harder to succeed, so quit your arrogant fuckin postering
It took two countries. This is why your beloved "Fatherland" is in shame. Even if it were more than two countries to defeat you. Bear Hitler's burden.
fuck hitler he was a douche, im canadian of german descent and hitler had to go, when i first said it it was just a damn joke but when u rip into the contribution of other countries that pisses me off, canada did above and beyond (aussies and kiwis too) the effort of other countries considering our population and resources of the time, canada did its part in a long and bloody struggle that could of gone for the nazis and that should always be remebered
God bless the men of the 505th PIR of the 82nd Airborne who jumped that night and were lost coming down in St Mere Eglise. AIRBORNE ALL THE WAY!. ALL AMERICAN.
Cheers for uploading as this is a great scene from a great film. But whats with the shitty music? The thing that really makes this scene is the church bells in the background.
I've been to the place, and although i wasnt there at the time it gives a sort of feeling how it was like, there's also a museum on the other side of the church thats worth the time ^^
Glad you think so to. I mean maybe back then it was good for people like our grandparents who lived back in those days lol but not for us younger people etc. I like most movies in my time. I just don't like black and white movies.
i actually love WWII movies, regardless of color, but this one is such a huge film( airborne, glider, beach landings) that with the resources they had back then it was impossible to create a movie of good quality
i have a video where i use the song Longest Day and there is a map in the game called st. mere eglise. What a coincidence.

I've been to the place, and although i wasnt there at the time it gives a sort of feeling how it was like, there's also a museum on the other side of the church thats worth the time ^^

This movie was so bad. To long omg 3 hours. They need to make a remake on this. It's such a old movie now.
