  • "GM has now confirmed, late in the game, that the Volt can, in some situations, use the ICE to power the wheels. This came to light after Motor Trend was allowed to test the car for three long drives and discovered:

However of particular interest, when going above 70 mph in charge sustaining mode, and the generator gets coupled to the drivetrain, the gas engine participates in the motive force.

  • Drove one of these today at the autoshow. All i can say is i don't see how these are even out for public yet. The lag that it takes to even get up to regular driving speed is just very bad. Plus the brakes don't feel like they work properly. Sorry chevy by for theo ne we were driving which was $50,000... i don't think so.

  • a 4,6L engine? is that what your said? hahah!

  • lol 4.6L, one of the many reasons why i should only watch top gear

  • Pollutes more than any gas car on the market. Takes coal to make electricity. Batteries are toxic waste waiting to happen and probably came over on a boat from China burning thousands of gallons of Diesel to get here. Give your heads a shake and open your eyes.

  • @3793939 Whats the plan when oil dries up. Coal? Yes please! Not all power plants are run on coal btw. Every car in the world has a battery. I don't hear you whining about them.

  • @3793939 Ignorant peoples like you will never buy an eletric car

i suggest you to watch the documentary ''who killed the eletric car'' from the hystory channel

Here in Brazil we have hydraulic power plants, but no eletric vehicles

only the Ford Fusion Hybrid are the one Hybrid available here

  • @3793939 Everything you've said wrong. The main Volt batteries are made with Lithium, the 2nd most abundant alkali metal on the planet (sodium is the first). Apples to apples, coal power plants emit less than a car due to much higher efficiency and better/more consistent emissions control. And as other have pointed out, electricity can be made from coal, nuclear, hydroelectric, wind, solar, or the rendered fat of you or your loved ones burning in a diesel generator.

  • this car is awesome!

  • I plan on getting over 0 mpg with my volt..... electric baby (;

  • 4.6 L engine? You dumb idiot.

  • I would love, love, love, to but one; if it didn't cost as much as a Mercedes-Benz. The price of this car defeats the saving you would get from the reduced, and in some cases eliminated, fuel costs.

  • I hate some of these people saying, only a 6 mpg dif, blah blah blah.

Thats not the point, if the only place u drive is to work, back and to the store for a week. and work is about 20miles away. you can go a week without using a gallon of gas...... thats a bigger difference than 6.

    40 for a day to work. 40x6 - 240

5 to store 245 mpg for that week.... hmmmmmm

  • This is a great idea and I would love to own one.

  • What a retard.

  • Wow, I thought this car was an electric car fully without the need for conventional gasoline. Now I see that it uses fuel much like the Prius or your conventional Hybrid cars to achieve what it does outside of a range of 40 miles. This doesn't bode well for GM who has actively been advertising this as a 100% electric vehicle for the past 3 years. I have a Hyundai Sonata and it uses 100% gasoline and it gets 36 miles a gallon, this thing gets 42 miles a gallon a difference of 6 MPG. That is sad.

  • @cnauta70 you are brilliant

  • I plan on getting over 100 mpg with my volt.....

  • wow, this guy should have done some sort of research before he got into the car, he sounds like an idiot with some of his questions.

  • wait...PC magazine?

  • Is not electric is hybrid...

  • @knomon No you don't need to use gas if you don't want too. You only use gas if you drive your car to the point where the battery is empty. So the gas engine is a backup engine

  • @knomon it's not hybrid, it's electric. the gas motor doesn't drive the car, it recharges the battery.

  • @rbrtchng Yep, I know now :P

  • Comment removed

  • @rbrtchng not true now apparently it does drive the wheels directly,

  • @knomon Yeah, yeah, is not Hybrid is electric assisted, I wanted to say that it also uses gas, but I didn't know the system was different... I think this kind of cars could be the immediate answer for ecologic driving with great autonomy...

  • i own one,nice car too

  • i own one

  • notice the UNION RAT @ 4:25 on the left side lol

  • Thousands of car accident victims were left behind by the massive government bailouts of GM and Chrysler. The $50 billion rescue of GM and the restructuring of Chrysler allowed them to "wash away legal responsibility for car-accident victims who had won damages or had pending lawsuits," OMG just found out,NO VOLT FOR ME.

  • na you can keep that crap, I'll keep my 300hp sports car. DRILL BABY DRILL !!!!

  • Comment removed

  • the day you can sell me an electric or hybrid car is the day I die. diesel pickups and large V8 cars for me thank you

  • @strumem90 are you proud of that or apologizing for it?

  • @drewsterooster quite proud of that, thank you :)

  • @strumem90 But gas cars are bad for the environment. Electrics are a lot better. Large Diesel/Gas pickups/SUV's are for men with small penises. Don't hide the fact that your dick is small. big trucks make it real obvious. Trucks aren't fun to drive.

  • @FASSY524 umm..listen here yah friendless prick....you show me an electric truck that can haul 13,000lbs then I might think about it... Its called a JOB, go get one you hairy hippie...get a friggen life ya coot

  • @strumem90 How do you know I have no life? I have a fantastic life are you kidding me? I don't play fucking video games or watch TV at all, I don't eat disgusting McDonalds AT ALL, I don't drink any kind of soda AT ALL. I take a thing called a bicycle and ride it up the Seattle hills and then lift weights. My high school rocks, I just went to Guatemala for social justice, and I also am in a band. Oh and I do have a job, gonna get paid $600 this summer. No car is needed, just biking and busing

  • Def. don't want this fellow to represent GM, the lights on him are on and no one is home, he's a waste of energy!

  • omg this is perfection!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • what a POS

  • y not throw a bigger generator so you never need to charge it?

  • 6:03 he nearly hits a man on a bicycle. what a pathetic death if would be ;) a bicycle man run over by eco-car. turbo lol

  • This is all bullshit, electric cars have been around for more years than anyone is willing to believe, oil companies and car companies have been withholding and destroying breakthroughs in this technology, this car is nothing,we are far more advanced than what companies our willing to give us,FUCK THIS CAR

  • @MRPINKBALLS12 exactly. why don't they put a small lightweight gas turbine for power generator? Simple... gas turbines may burn anything including eadible oil, and it does it fairly clean (cos temp is high). Morover they are cheap in production. Overall Shell looses cash, GM looses workplaces. Consumer wins. But consumer shall buy anything you throw at him. Even 10 years old solutions if you make right PR around.

  • 4.6L hahah yea who is this guy?

  • I heard that sales figures for the Chevy Dolt are anemic, despite the government rebate.

  • Start with the $50 billion bailout…add $240 million in Energy Department grants doled out to G.M. last summer, $150 million in federal money to the Volt’s Korean battery supplier, up to $1.5 billion in tax breaks for purchasers and other consumer incentives, and some significant portion of the $14 billion loan G.M. got in 2008 for ‘retooling’ its plants, and you’ve got some idea of how much taxpayer cash is built into every Volt.

  • What is a bailout? Prove to me someone is bailing someone out? Why are we giving $240 Million dollars to something we don't even need anymore. Automobile Production reached its peak. Everybody already owns a car.

  • @heartlessvietboy

Bailout aka Pandering for Campaign Support aka Political Cronyism aka State Capitalism aka Corporate Socialism aka Central Planning aka Keynesianism aka Anti-Free Market Capitalism.

"A pile of crap by any other name would smell so vile and draw so many flies" - yakyakyak69

  • A Bail-out as a campaign support? And we are listening to this crap? Saving one corporation from bankruptcy doesn't mean you can stand up there and talk all day about something that isn't really a problem at all.

  • @heartlessvietboy NOT "A Bail-out as a campaign support?"

It is Bail outs FOR campaign support. The bailouts benefitted the UNIONS who raise wages & benefits so high that manufacturer's can NOT compete without paying off crony politicians so these corrupt "officials" will "redistribute" taxpayer money to them.

The "Bail outs" were in return for "campaign support" from powerful, rich, corrupt union bosses and the leadership of the companies which recieved the STOLEN taxpayer money.

  • Who is campaigning? Does that person have direct decision on bail-out money? Who are those UNIONS? I do not get this Government, Anti-Matter, Economy GDP argument to why they are right and we cannot speak over them.

  • I recently test drove a Chevy Volt. The drive is smooth. Good car in my opinion. My conception of the Volt is that it's the most fuel efficient Hybrid in the market.

  • 4.6l engine!! intel inside!! AMD inside!! -.-

  • Surprised he didn't ask "Where is the flux-capacitor?"

  • common sense says that a 4.6l engine would be very big.

  • Ever heard of In-Car-TMI !?

  • Those familiar with the history of GM, would know that GM had previously made electric cars back in the 90's with similar technology. However they took them back and crushed good condition electric cars without explanation. I can't leave all the blame to GM because Toyota and Ford also developed similar models, but those met the same fate. The name of the car was the EV1.

If GM had kept the EV1 (100 mile range fully electric car), where would electric cars be today?

  • charge your car at home using diesel fuel and coal instead of using gasoline from a fuel station. more eco friendly? how many jobs will be lost? what will be done to create other jobs? will the gov. help us? ware do the batteries go when their dead, you're back yard?

  • this guy sucks at driving

  • @pooponjcena it's NYC man, give him a break.

  • A new study out of Purdue suggests that even if plug-in vehicle prices come down significantly, they still won’t be very cost-effective in places like California due to high electricity rates.

Chevy Volt buyers for instance, will spend $10,000 more in total costs compared to a Toyota Prius or a Chevy Cobalt, even after a $7500 tax credit, unless oil prices rise significantly – as high as $254 per barrel

  • @yakyakyak69 You should look at your energy bill to see how many KWH of energy you used and the amount you are charged at whatever increment your utility company bills you on (monthly, many months, etc). After you get the amount you are charged for that amount of energy used, find out how much energy is in one gallon of gas. Compare the cost in gas for the same energy and you will be very shocked just how insanely high gas is compared to your utility energy bill.

  • @EETechs I really LOVE the Volt, but you are better off buying a Jetta TDI and the taxpayers pay ZERO for your new car.

  • Why would they have a retarded man do a test drive?

  • I like that car ... I have to have one of those ...

  • Yes, a 4.6 L V8 super charged with NOS.

  • The Tesla Roadster was kickin' the Volts ASS before it even went into developement!!

  • I love that Chevy is using electric cars but why not bring back steam cars? I'm also a big fan on using windmills and solar panels just give me an answer.

  • I can't wait to test drive one.

  • awesome... now i will have to wait for my car to boot up... excellent ... #FAIL

  • THIS GUY IS STUPID. HE REALLY SAID 4.6 LITER ENGINE. LOL :)))))

  • 2:58

  • @myperfectautomobile See what a Volt Owner has to say on the Volt!

  • this PCmag guy is so ignorant

  • really wishing that dumbass did crash the volt

  • you are a fucking idiot lance ,for you just said [ ia this a 4.6 liter engine] yeah real smart take your glasses and shove it up your ass.they put an old mustang 4.6 in a volt

  • I guess it is for the average schmuck. (well in NYC) Moby (minus the money and some talent) drove past my block. Know just a little more before you film something. Enjoy!

  • it's hybrid!

  • this PCMag guy is asking too many Real Question which the Chevy people dont like.

  • it take fucking 13 hours for the car to be fully recharge. stupid stupid stupid

  • this guy is probably gay and clearly rides a vespa 4.6l really lol ??

  • Why does a fully electric car need an oil lamp??

  • @tetra021 because it has a gasoline generator that is lubricated with oil.

  • This guy's stupid, did he really say 4.6liter engine??? @ 2:58......

  • @chrisrefaei its a 1.4 L 4 cylinder engine, just throw this thing in the back of my ford ranger and my truck will still move hahaha

  • @chrisrefaei amen man ... certainly the WRONG choice of person to send to test drive it ... an intern that is a automotive enthusiast would have been 100 times better.

  • @chrisrefaei LOL yea he did say 4.6liter engine. I was like what a 4.6liter lol

  • @chrisrefaei clueless to cars is probably what he is.

  • @chrisrefaei ha ha that's as big as my town car v8 engine, I doubt that will fit into that car.

  • I don't know what he said. But the Chevrolet Volt is a Battery Vehicle with an on-board gasoline generator.

  • @chrisrefaei wouldn't that be awesome though? 50 mpg v8 haha

  • @chrisrefaei - And a 500kW motor!!! Haha.

  • @chrisrefaei I mean he's the editor in chief of one of the bigger magazine franchises in america, but i guess you're right, he's stupid for not being a car guy.

  • @chrisrefaei Well, if you consider he's a computer guy and not a car guy I'm just happy he knew how to describe a engine size. It would be like a car guy describing a processor speed in Mhz. We all have our strong and weak points.

  • @chrisrefaei pane tohle auto má i spalovací motor tak nevím jestli je hlupák ??,

  • I am low on gasoline right now. Imagine what $4.00 of change in my pockets can do to take me around the city for the entire day on electricity mode.

  • hold on...350 miles with everything charged up? ... ford claims the fusion hybrid can do 700+ now tell me...whats the point of this? to get GM out of there money slump?

  • @chombomo88 Well, thats with a hybrid. It uses a full gasoline engine, not only a small generator for the batteries. I think the point is, that its not creating the ultimate go forever miles car, but to create a car leading us in the path that gets us off gas, so that even hybrids become obsolete. Youre still buying gas for both cars, but the volt uses a very very very very small percentage of what even a hybrid would have to use. This is the first step in that direction, we need to support it.

  • @Pibbmasta yea...i thought about it after i posted it. but idk.we'll see how it will do

  • @chombomo88 miles on a tank is not really relevant, miles per gallon and miles per gallon equivalent (MPG and MPGe) are much more significant figures. The fusion hybrid gets 41 MPG city, and the Volt gets 93 MPGe in EV mode and 37 MPG in gasoline mode so it is clearly a more efficient vehicle.

  • Is that the same ding at 00:40 that Boeing use for their fasten-seatbelt signs?

  • just my opinion but wouldnt it be better if they tested it on an LA freeway. nuff said

  • @5botball Because they don't like sitting in traffic for 4 hours...

  • LOL ! How stupid could you be ?

  • Is it a 4.6 liter. No its a 1.4 hahah

  • 4.6L...

  • BAD DRIVER! Takes his hands off the wheel (multiple times!) in the middle of NYC! Looks completely away from where he's driving - doesn't pay attention to his driving! Very DANGEROUS ! ! ! This guy is an accident waiting to happen! What an IDIOT ! ! ! Where in the world did he ever learn how to drive a car???????

  • @gfemg Stop being a bitch :)

  • @nazarook The bitch is the one who made a complete ass out of himself by showing off his horrendous driving skills on youtube! This video should be re-named: How NOT to drive a car! PS - The bitch needs to learn how to maintain Full Control of his vehicle by keeping his eyes on the the road and using the mirrors to scan around the vehicle and maintain situational awareness of what's going on around him - while havng a conversation with others in the vehicle. Amazing he didn't crash!

  • @gfemg u need to shut up, the review is what is important

  • @AntaresInScorpius The review is as bad as the driving! The review needs to be renamed: How NOT to drive a car!

  • Its a hybrid not an electric car, why do people keep calling it that? If the motor is directly connected to the drive train, its a hybrid.

  • @dlmarti no it is not directly connected to the drive train.

  • @AntaresInScorpius actually it is. That was why everyone was in an uproar about it at the unveiling. GM had always said it wasn't. The car will drive at full speed even with the electric motor removed.

  • @dlmarti From my understanding it's a bit more complex than that - the engine can but is not permanently connected to the drive train, unlike many Hybrids. It only connects directly with the drivetrain in the event that the electric engine cannot cope, be it extreme accelleration or some form of failure. So the car can run full electric, full petrol or a mix, which is what makes it real-world capable. If it had been purely electric, then to make it usable it ends up as expensive as a Tesla.

  • @AntaresInScorpius it is

  • Now we just need need more ways to produce electric energy,

like more wind farms, and more solar panels!

I'd also love to see the U.S. create more mass transit systems so we don't have to be so reliant on automobiles...

  • @superfluousD -- wind farm is not the answer unless we figure out a cost effective way of putting up windmills higher up in our atmosphere. We will only have windmill clutter on our ground when it is so expensive and produces next to zero cost effective energy. Hydrogen power coming from water and constant recharging of higher capacity cheaper batteries is the answer. Solar also is not a solution unless you live in a very sunny area and it is only god for stationary homes and buildings.

  • My dad works for GM. Sometimes things can seem exciting, but Chevy's are always fun to look forward to.

  • This guy is obviously from Pc Magazine if he thinks that they put a 4.6 liter engine in this...

  • i dont think the driver knows much about cars and the lady doesnt know much about electronics. which is funny. i wish it was cheaper.

  • Comment removed

  • @pincheneo

    It IS "cheaper".

The taxpayers "loaned" GM's UAW $40 Billion and the "taxpayers" are giving each Volt buyers $7,500 for each Volt they buy.

Of course, the us $Dollar loses value with each additional $ Dollar printed which causes inflation which makes EVERYTHING cost more...

and the US has the WORLD's 2nd highest corporate taxes and Crazy complex regulations which FORCES non-taxpayer subsidized manufacturer's offshore BUT...

Rich Volt buyers NEED a $7,500 EV tax credit.

  • @yakyakyak69 The U.S. does NOT have one of the highest corporate tax rates. The corporate lobbyists and their puppet politicians just WANT us to think that so that they can continue to enjoy and further expand on the tax breaks and loopholes that already have! - Everyone knows that the big corporations have it VERY cushy in the States.

  • @superfluousD

Now that you have shown that you are ignorant of any real facts, let me show you.

    Google "world corporate income taxes"

There is a LOT of information showing that Japan is the highest , the USA is a VERY close 2nd and Canada has the 3rd hightst corporate tax rates.

The information is readily available with anyone who wants facts instead of just promoting their marxist, redistributionist B.S.

Global Manufacturers go where they can COMPETITIVELY PRODUCE.

  • @superfluousD - correction: US ON PAPER does have a high tax rate, but corporations bend over backwards to find loopholes to not pay them, like, yes, going overseas. Some companies manage not to pay any taxes at all; GE, BofA, among others. - Anyway, this video is about GM's electric/hybrid car! Nice to see an alternative like the Volt, but, problem is it still needs a lot of energy to operate. We need a FredFlintsone car! (& the only Marx that I would "promote" is Groucho & his brothers! ;-)

  • @crammage

The more gas, the more extra weight, and the more space needed that is already taken up by the battery

  • Comment removed

  • damn why cant it have a 16 gallon tank like my '86 subaru instead of puny 9.6

and more like 100 mile battery range instead of weak 40 miles

  • It's not an electric car. Sorry. I love the vehicle and the concept. But don't lie.

  • i want this Car
