All of the people saying that the Mayans were peaceful and didn't hurt a soul are wrong. They were like the Europeans at the time, or any other advanced culture. they did raid villages to get people to sacrifice and had slaves. The Mayans, Aztecs, and Incas all did this. Now, they also had wonderful accomplishments as well. It's just that when a culture has the ability to exploit a weaker culture, 99% of the time they will.

Thanks to Gibson, he has painted the Mayans so WRONGFULLY that I have taken interests in understanding how the real Mayans who were known for their excellent Science and Arts were. This movie is as bad as and as wrongfully depicts a real religion as "Indiana Jones and The temple of Doom" does.

Ok, lets clarify some things:

1 Mayans didnt "disapeared". their civilization did. Many cities were abandoned and their population fell a lot but there still were mayan cities even by 1600 AD. Just like the roman empire, there were still romans but their civilization was gone and many cities were abandoned. In the case of the romans it is known what made the civilization disapear (barbarians), in the case of the mayans we do not know.

2 Mayans did practiced sacrafice. But it was an honour to be sacrificed, they played the so famous ball game and they sacrificed the winner team. The victims (martyrs, whatever) were not prisioners and were happy to be sacrificed. The gods wouldn't accept losers as sacrifice meat or skinny prisioners, they wanted only victorious athlets. They didn't sacrifice as much people as seen in the movie, just in specific days wich were related to astronomical events and stuff.

They also chosed maidens since they were babies and were grown up in the temples to be sacrified at a certain age or at a certain event and they were aware that they were going to be sacrified. Unlike aztecs who fought "sacred wars" just to capture prisioners to sacrifice. Aztecs believed that the sun needed "fuel" to rise again in the morning. So they had to sacrifice 1 person a day. 365 a year.

3 Mayans never said the world was going to end in 2012, their calendar ends in the winter solstice of 2012. Similar to the Y2K effect, what happens when your numeric system ends?? EXAMPLE: your numeric system only has 4 slots so your smallest number is 0000 and your biggest number is 9999. What happens when you reach 9997-->9998-->9999? you cant continue, the same happens with the mayan calendar. is the end of the calendar "the end of time". Nothing else, no prophecy, no nothing.

Why they didn't make a longer calendar?, who knows, might be they didnt think they were going to exist by that date (wich is true) might be they were just lazy. But the real mistery in the mayan calendar is not its end but its beggining. it just starts in a generic date when mayans didnt even existed (some where around 300 BC) and there is no reason written or found that explains why it starts in that date.
