@salemhodson its because aircraft like mig 21 do not look menacing enough and hollywood knows the average joe knows jack about aircraft, guns, the military, etc. When I was in the Air Force there were plenty of maintainers and operations staff that could not even identify their own services aircraft. Look at todays movies, political or poor plots, actors that use viagra, and CGI everything while hollywood calls it good.

If I remember right he was a high school student...he and "Chappy" rescue his dad...but what does it matter how old Doug is? It's total fiction..

To be a pilot in the AF you'll have to have a degree..I think most pilots (at least fighter pilots) do engineering degress so I'd say your looking at 21 - 22 by the time ou get a bachelors and a few more for training etc ifyou get in a fighter squadron. NOt sure for other aircraft. Probably looking around 24 -25? But this is total guess on my part.
